The Barton 2.0 Crystal Grey – Red glasses, part of the new ROKA x Huberman Wind Down Collection, blend scientific innovation with sleek design. Created in collaboration with Stanford neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman, these glasses aim to improve sleep quality and overall well-being by addressing the disruptive effects of artificial blue and green light on circadian rhythms.

ROKA

ROKA, founded in 2011 in Austin, Texas, is renowned for its high-performance eyewear and technical apparel designed to enhance athletic performance. The company offers a diverse range of products, including prescription glasses, sunglasses, and technical gear, all crafted with input from athletes to ensure optimal functionality and comfort.

In collaboration with Dr. Andrew Huberman, a Stanford neuroscientist, ROKA has developed the Wind Down™ Collection. This innovative line of eyewear is designed to block harmful artificial blue and green light, which can disrupt circadian rhythms and affect sleep quality. By filtering out these wavelengths, the Wind Down™ glasses aim to improve sleep patterns and overall well-being.

ROKA’s commitment to quality and performance is evident in their meticulous design process, which combines premium materials with advanced engineering. This approach ensures that their products not only meet the demands of athletes but also support the health and wellness of all users.

ROKA Launch For The Wind Down Collection

On November 1, 2024, ROKA, in collaboration with Dr. Andrew Huberman—a prominent Stanford neuroscientist—launched the Wind Down™ Collection.

This innovative line of eyewear is designed to block harmful artificial blue and green light, which can disrupt circadian rhythms and affect sleep quality. By filtering out these wavelengths, the Wind Down™ glasses aim to improve sleep patterns and overall well-being. See more about ROKA’s Wind Down Collection

Design & Comfort

The Barton 2.0 in Crystal Grey is visually striking, offering a minimalist and contemporary aesthetic. The frame is lightweight and well-fitted, ensuring comfort for prolonged evening wear. The red-tinted lenses are both functional and subtle, avoiding the overly harsh look some blue light glasses can have.

Functionality

The science behind the collection is compelling. Dr. Huberman emphasizes that blue light exposure in the evening can suppress melatonin production, a key hormone for sleep. By filtering out blue and green light, the Barton 2.0 glasses enable a smoother transition to a restful state, aligning with the body’s natural rhythms.

Wearing these after sunset, I noticed a tangible difference in how quickly I felt ready for bed. The glasses reduced the strain from screens and artificial lighting, creating a calming effect as the evening progressed. Additionally, they claim to help regulate cortisol levels, which is a welcome bonus for reducing evening stress.

ROKA x Huberman Wind Down Collection

Key Benefits

  • Blue Light Blocking: The lenses effectively filter harmful wavelengths, promoting melatonin production and improving sleep readiness.
  • Cortisol Regulation: By limiting exposure to blue light, these glasses help manage evening cortisol levels, fostering relaxation.
  • Photophobia Relief: For those prone to headaches from harsh lighting, the Barton 2.0 provides noticeable relief, adding to its appeal for light-sensitive individuals.

Practical Use

These glasses are particularly suited for evening screen time, reading, or winding down with dimmed lighting. For active individuals or anyone concerned with sleep quality, they represent a simple yet effective solution to combat the overstimulation of modern lighting.

How Does the Packaging Measure Up?

ROKA’s attention to detail doesn’t stop at the product itself—it extends to the packaging, which is truly next-level. From the moment you unbox your Wind Down™ glasses, it’s clear that ROKA values presentation as much as performance. The sleek, minimalist design of the packaging exudes sophistication and professionalism, rivaling the premium unboxing experience you’d expect from a brand like Apple.

Each pair of glasses comes securely nestled in a sturdy, high-quality box, complete with a protective case, a microfiber cleaning cloth, and easy-to-follow instructions. The materials feel durable and luxurious, and the branding is subtle yet refined. This thoughtful packaging not only protects your glasses but also enhances the overall customer experience, making you feel like you’ve invested in something truly special.

ROKA’s commitment to excellence is evident in every detail, from the product to the packaging, reinforcing their reputation as a leader in innovative, high-performance eyewear.

Final Thoughts

ROKA’s Barton 2.0 Crystal Grey – Red delivers on its promise of enhancing evening routines and sleep quality. By combining sleek design with scientific innovation, this pair from the Wind Down Collection is a must-have for anyone serious about optimizing their health through light management. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast, athlete, or someone looking to improve sleep hygiene, the Barton 2.0 is a worthwhile investment in your well-being.

Rating: 4.8/5
For its excellent functionality, thoughtful design, and tangible benefits to sleep and relaxation, the Barton 2.0 Crystal Grey – Red stands out as a game-changer in blue light-blocking eyewear.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How are ROKA’s Wind Down™ glasses different from traditional blue light glasses?
ROKA’s Wind Down™ glasses, developed in partnership with Dr. Andrew Huberman, are a step above standard blue light glasses. They don’t just block blue light; they also filter a significant portion of green light in the short wavelength range (400–500 nm). This dual-filtering provides superior protection compared to traditional lenses. Additionally, ROKA uses premium optics with advanced anti-scratch, anti-reflective, and hydrophobic coatings, ensuring enhanced durability and performance.

Why do these lenses have an orange or red tint?
The orange-red tint is a necessary feature for filtering out blue and green light. These shorter wavelengths are part of the visible spectrum that can disrupt sleep and increase stress hormones in the evening. The red-orange color works like an opposite-side filter, effectively blocking these wavelengths to create a more relaxing visual environment, much like the filters used in traditional photography.

When is the best time to wear ROKA’s Wind Down™ glasses?
These glasses are specifically designed for evening and nighttime use. During the day, exposure to blue and green light is actually beneficial—it supports wakefulness and helps maintain your circadian rhythm. However, as the evening progresses, artificial blue and green light from screens and other sources can disrupt your body’s natural sleep cues. Wearing Wind Down™ glasses during this critical period reduces this disruption and helps prepare your body for restful sleep.

How do these glasses improve sleep?
Artificial blue and green light at night can elevate cortisol, the stress hormone, and suppress melatonin, the hormone that regulates your sleep cycle. By filtering out these disruptive wavelengths, ROKA’s Wind Down™ glasses minimize the impact of artificial light on your circadian rhythm, giving your body a better chance to transition naturally into sleep.

What percentage of blue light do these lenses block?
ROKA’s Wind Down™ lenses filter 100% of visible blue light and most of the green light spectrum under normal lighting conditions, making them highly effective at reducing nighttime light exposure.

What if I’m unsure whether these glasses will work for me?
If you’re hesitant, ROKA’s 30-day no-hassle money-back guarantee makes it easy to give these glasses a try. Many users notice a sense of calm and relaxation during their first evening of use, though it might take a few days to fully adjust. With this risk-free policy, you can experience the benefits for yourself and decide if they fit your needs.

Can I wear these glasses while driving?
ROKA’s Wind Down™ glasses are not designed for driving or operating machinery. Their unique tint can reduce visibility in low-light conditions, making them unsuitable for these activities. For safety, avoid using them while behind the wheel or handling equipment.

To get a better understanding of Gore Wear Terminology, I have included a brief description of what the letters and numbers mean.

  • C5/R5 – Products designed for cycling/running but with a more relaxed design.

REVIEW

Gore R5 Gore-TEX Infinium Soft Lined Hooded Jacket Review

Gore’s use of Infinium, a strong, synthetic polymer (ePTFE) already inside the membrane of GORE-TEX supposedly changes the feel to be a bit more comfortable. Unlike full GORE-TEX, the ePTFE coating is weather resistant rather than fully waterproof. The upside is the jacket breaths better than its fully GORE-TEX counterpart.

A huge innovation in performance outer layers, this Infinium Soft Lined Hoodie remains extremely light, soft and comfortable and ensures the body stays warm and temperature regulated when you work out. Alongside premium next-to-skin comfort, this hooded jacket will be a go-to favorite.

You can really see the water beading in the above 3 images. I took the jacket out on a misty morning run where the temps were in the low 40’s. The jacket performed flawlessly and kept me dry and toasty.

The Jacket does everything you would want from a running jacket, paring outstanding functionality with a classic, elegant design. This means that not only is it an option for running and trail running at any level, but it can also be paired with denim for everyday life.

Infinium Technology

This Jacket is the first to use Gore’s new Infinium technology, which pairs Gore Film on the outside of the jacket with a soft backer on the inside. This brings an elite balance of persistent beading protection with a soft plush fit that gives a comfortable feel. Running Jackets in the past has had to choose between these attributes; by combining them Gore has brought new innovation to the industry and can give you a multi-functional jacket that is useful in any situation.

The two-layer construction of the jacket begins with the Gore Shakedry outer layer. This layer is durably waterproof and completely windproof, and can also protect from snowy conditions, keeping you warm and dry at all times, whether you are training, competing, or just going to the shops. This layer is finished with Gore’s Windstopper membrane, adding to the windproofing and water resistance. The inner layer of the jacket is a soft backer that brings comfort and breathability, with a close-fitting, premium fit. This ensures that not only are you protected by the elements, but you are warm, comfortable, and happy while outdoors. Despite these two premium layers in the same jacket, the garment is still incredibly lightweight, ensuring you are not restricted in any way and are free to tackle the day however you see fit.

Away from the innovative technology, Gore can always be relied on to provide a quality design. The jacket is equipped with a waistband and drawcord, ensuring the fit can be tailored to your preferences. A stretch insert at the sleeve cuff also adds to this. Spacious pockets are features, with front side entry pockets with a zipper garage keeping all valuables secure, with a security pocket inside for true ease-of-mind. The sides of the jacket are seam-free, which ensures increased flexibility and range of motion. The shoulders are also seam-free, which ensures optimum comfort when using a backpack. The logo and print of the Jacket are reflective, ensuring full visibility and safety in low-light conditions. All these features combine for a revolutionary jacket that is comfortable, protective, and ideal for the many adventures you will find yourself in.

Technical Highlights

Features

  • The new innovation in soft-lined shells: windproof, breathable, lightweight warmth
  • New soft, quiet, persistent beading (film out) surface and moisture-wicking textured backer
  • Waistband with drawcord
  • Stretch insert at sleeve cuff
  • Security pocket inside right pocket
  • Front side-entry pockets with zipper garage
  • Seam-free sides to increase range of motion
  • Seam-free shoulder for increased comfort when used with backpack
  • Reflective logo and print
  • Integrated hood with elastic facing
  • Full-length front zip with full-length under flap
Bottom Line

I really like this jacket’s design. The material is a bit thicker than Gore’s R7 Shakedry Jacket, which when it’s cold and breezy creates a warmer barrier. A lot of jackets IMO are too thin, which makes you feel cold breezes.

Vintage Coolers of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s were built like tanks and practically weigh as much, but leave them out in the elements for a while and rust soon starts eating them away.   Even today, most coolers seem easy prey for the elements and still fall short in their design and longevity.

In 2006 YETI was founded with a mission to build a better cooler.  One that was built for the serious outdoor enthusiast rather than for the mass discount retailers.  Something where the handles wouldn’t break, latches wouldn’t snap and lids wouldn’t cave in.  Basically the ultimate cooler, but beyond the rugged design, the cooler had to keep things cold for a very long time.

To understand how tough YETI has made their coolers, all you need to think about is how tough kayaks are these days.  YETI uses rotomolded construction, just like how Kayaks are made.  Drop it, kick it and even stand on it without worry.  Think of a YETI as your portable step stool and indestructible box, that keeps things amazingly cold when iced.  YETI coolers even have the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) stamp of approval for being Grizzly Bear safe (As long as the coolers are locked).

The Rotomolded YETI® cooler features include:

  • One-piece rotomolded polyethylene body (the same process as used for whitewater kayaks)
  • Walls filled with thick 2” foam designed to keep things colder for longer
  • Lid filled with 3” polyurethane foam
  • Heavy-duty, non-breakable hinge system
  • Freezer quality sealing gasket to lock in the cold
  • Food-grade material construction (dry ice compatible)
  • Non-slip rubber feet
  • Recessed leak-proof drain plug
  • Lockable lid design including heavy-duty T-latches and integrated padlock ports
  • UV resistant
  • Built-in slots for the tie-down capability, making locking down a cooler to a deck or boat easier

Here is the lowdown on the Yeti Roadie 20

Technical Highlights

Here is a great video that describes the YETI Roadie 20 in detail.

REVIEW

The Good
We have a soft spot for quality products and the YETI Roadie oozes with quality.  The T-Rex rubber latches are the same ones used on ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles) and are built for loads of use.  People love saying the name YETI, it’s not a cooler, it’s a YETI.  When we filled our YETI with ice on a recent excursion to the great outdoors, it was like opening up a freezer every time we needed to grab something from it.  You could just feel the cold air trapped inside.  We thought that was pretty impressive considering it was 100 degrees outside, yet Rodie’s contents remained freezing cold.

YETIs come with an amazing 5-year warranty.  Impressive to say the least, which for most people, is ease of mind.  We are quite certain, that for the majority of YETI owners, this is the last cooler they will ever need, well that is unless they want to have more on hand for their adventures.

The Bad
For those who are a little less, how should we say, strength enabled, you may find the YETI a little on the heavy side.  Being bomb-proof does come with a price, namely weight.  Weighing in at 22lbs empty, the Roadie 20 after adding ice, food and liquid can easily top 50lbs.  Another downside is the actual storage space.   YETI coolers tend to have less space in them than their footprint would portray.  The simple reason is, if you want to keep things cold and keep them cold for a very long time, you need a lot of insulation, which adds to the overall bulk.

The Ugly
If you’re a Walmart shopper or a penny pincher, you may balk at the price tag.  The cost of the YETI is triple the cost of your standard Coleman cooler.  YETIs are built for the serious outdoor enthusiast who will use their coolers throughout the seasons, not just a one-day event.   With the price, you also have to weigh in longevity.  You may be perfectly happy with a cheaper cooler, but over time that cooler, with a lot of use, will need replacement.  YETIs from their design and everything we read, last a very long time and can be relied upon day after day.  In fact, if you’re like most people, a YETI purchase could be a purchase for life.  Something to think about when contemplating price.

We have read lots of reviews pertaining to the T-Rex rubber latches and how they appear to be the weak spot in some environments where sun damage over time weakens and make the rubber more prone to breakage.  The T-Rex latches are replaceable, so even if one should break, it’s very easy to replace.

Overall

Bottom Line

Let’s face it, YETI has done their homework and come out with an amazing product.  They know their market and what consumers wanted.  It’s really an amazing story of passion combine with pure inspiration to make something better than it was.  They have created a brand and a following that are fanatical about their products.  It’s not just a cooler, it’s a YETI.

We absolutely love the cooler for what it does.  Keeping things wickedly cold, even in the searing heat of an Austin summer.  If we could change anything about the Rodie, it would be to somehow to make it lighter, yet still, maintain it’s ruggedness.  New materials are constantly evolving and we are sure there will be ways to lighten the load.  Another option to look into would be a set of side handles similar to those on their larger coolers.

To find out more definitely check out YETI’s website.  You will be glad you did.

Last year at Interbike I got a chance to check out the radical and very gnarly Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling shoe.

Northwave Extreme Xcm 2 Gtx Cycling Shoe Review

It’s a combination of an ankle boot and an MTB/XC cycling shoe mashed together to combat cold winter riding and of course cold feet. It’s like having a wetsuit from your ankles to your toes and just looking at them make you feel warm and cozy.

Northwave is one of the few cycling shoe companies that actually caters to winter riding and riders. With the Xtreme XCM GTX, you don’t need to wear booties or toe covers, because it’s all combined into one package.

Unboxing

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Unboxing

The cycling shoes arrived in your typical cycling shoe box with the cool Northwave logo.

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling Shoe Unboxing

I received a size US 11 / 44. I normally wear a size 43, but I figured since these are winter cycling shoes I might want to wear thicker socks, so a bigger size was in order.

The Extreme XCM 2 GTX come in Sizes: 39-48, so those with very small feet or large feet may not be able to wear them.

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling Shoe Size

The shoes come equipped with 2 aggressive front cleats on the sole that are replaceable. Unfortunately, the heel pads of the shoes aren’t replaceable.

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling Shoe carbon bottom
Northwave Extreme XCM 2 GTX Shoe Review Bottom

The shoes are SPD compatible with a nice looking carbon base plate. Northwave rates the shoes with a Stiffness index of 12, which is about the highest I have seen on a pair of mountain bike shoes.

The toe box is reinforced with a highly abrasion-resistant rubber and the reinforcement extends 360° protection along the entire upper.

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling Shoe dial

The lacing system utilizes Northwave’s Xframe® patented construction and SLW2 dial dial system. These are the exact same dials that are used in the Northwave Extreme RR.

The Xframe design really seems to wrap around the foot, giving a good amount of tension and keeping your foot in place.

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling Shoe adjusting dial

While the Northwave SLW2 dials do work, I prefer BOA dials for ease of use. The main issue with the Northwave dials is you often have to use to hands to make adjustments. With BOAs you almost always just need one.

REVIEW

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX 2019 Review

When you unbox the Xtremes you will notice the quality and beefiness. They are built for roughed adventures. The rubber outsoles feel legit and definitely give the appearance of a solid piece of cyling equipment.

Gore-Tex®

The shoes are specifically designed for the off-road types, you know the ones who love to get sloppy on single track and crazy downhill runs through the woods.

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling Shoe Gore-Tex

Northwave incorporated Gore-Tex®, as the material of choice to prevent unwanted water, snow, and sleet from entering the cycling shoes. In fact, Northwave was the first cycling shoe manufacturer to use Gore-Tex® and was the first to address the demands for performance winter shoes.

The Gore-Tex is infused in an elastic Rattler® membrane and placed in critical areas that create a wind and waterproof shield.

Climaflex Collar

Northwave Extreme XCM 2 GTX Shoe Review

Northwave uses what they refer to as a Climaflex collar that extends beyond a normal cycling shoe, looking more like a boot than a typical cycling shoe. It’s a combination of soft and highly-insulating thermal Neoprene.

I found the collar to be really helpful in helping to keep the muck out and also keep your feet a bit warmer. Those who like to wear shorter socks may want to wear taller ones when wearing the Xtreme XCM 2 GTXs.

With the Gore-Tex® Duratherm membrane upper, you are guaranteed to have a shoe that is totally windproof and water proof.

Temperature Rating

The Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX’s are rated for -15°C (5°F) & up to 5°C (41°F). Yes you could say they are the warmest cycling shoes made and if not certainly rank up there.

Northwave utilizes an Arctic GTX footbed with a four-layer aluminum and fleece construction works with the membrane to deliver outstanding warmth and insulation.

Let’s just say it is no ordinary shoe insert, it’s designed for cold and it works.

Technical

  • The water- and windproof Gore-Tex® Duratherm membrane is the best for wicking away any sweat and keeps your feet perfectly insulated and warm even in the coldest conditions
  • Made with Xframe® patented construction and ultralight next-generation materials, the upper transfers every watt of power and provides the snuggest, even fit with no pressure points
  • Additional thermal layer on the toe delivers unbeatable insulation and warmth
  • Highly abrasion-resistant rubber reinforcements ensure 360° protection along the entire upper
  • SLW2 dial, the only one with step-by-step and full release in a single button
  • The Climaflex collar made of extremely elastic Gore-Tex Rattler® membrane and highly insulating Neoprene delivers unprecedented mobility and protection from the weather
  • Integrated heel system ensures efficient heel retention
  • The Arctic GTX footbed with a four-layer aluminum and fleece construction works with the membrane to deliver outstanding warmth and insulation
  • 360° reflective inserts
  • Weight: 448 grams
  • Sizes: 39-48
  • Color: Black
  • Price: $329.99
Bottom Line

For those that live in cold climates, the Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling shoes are a no brainer. They are by far the warmest shoes I have ever worn.

You don’t have to mess with booties or toe covers; the GTX does it all.

I did find the shoes to be harder to enter and exit than regular cycling shoes, but given the benefit of how warm they are, it’s a tradeoff I would take any day when the weather is cold.

Check out the Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX and other products in the Northwave cycling line.

LANCE ARMSTRONG ON LYING:

LANCE ARMSTRONG: I think if you polled the world, the first issue, doping in the sport of cycling, at that generation, I think most people now have enough history and enough knowledge to know that, gosh, it looked like– it looked like everybody did it. That isn’t the issue for people. The issue is how I so aggressively defended myself, being litigious, going after people. That’s the thing.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: Lying.

LANCE ARMSTRONG: Well, yeah. But we all lied. I mean, in no point were you just gonna say, “Oh, you know what? I’m, kind of, sick of lying. I’m gonna tell you the truth.” But, of course there were lies. But even then, people– this notion or this idea of bullying is a terrible. Look, I mean, I say it all the time. I mean, if I saw my– if– when I watch old clips, because I get to watch them either through lawsuits or just whatever– the way I acted, if I saw one of my children act that way, I mean, it would be– it would be a very rough conversation.

LANCE ARMSTRONG ON DONALD TRUMP:

ANDRW ROSS SORKIN: Donald Trump before he was president, I don’t know if you saw this, the night after or the morning after wrote, “Lance Armstrong did himself great harm last night. Lawsuits and failure will follow him.” Did you see that?

LANCE ARMSTRONG: I did see it. Yeah.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: What did you think when you saw that?

LANCE ARMSTRONG: Well, listen, you have to remember. I mean, this is six years ago. So he was just– Donald Trump was just a loudmouth, you know, out trying to get attention. And that was in a sea of– there were– I don’t think there were millions of those, but there were tens of thousands of those. And so he was just another person. Now he’s our president– somehow. And, whatever. I mean, he– he’s– he’s right. He’s half right. “He’s gonna cost himself a lot of money.” Right? We know that happened. So he got– he got—and, “a lifetime of failure.” Well– I don’t know who judges people’s lifetimes, whether or not they’re failures or successes or just okay. But I don’t feel like a failure. And I’ve never felt like a failure since then. And so– but yes, I read that at the time. And he was half right. He got a 50.

LANCE ARMSTRONG ON TRUST / NEXT VENTŪRES:

LANCE ARMSTRONG: There’s been people that we ask for a meeting and they just don’t answer. So you have to assume that’s what they’re thinking. Right? “I don’t want this association. I can’t trust this guy.” And by the way, fair play. I understand. I’m not gonna be upset or bitter about that. You have every right. And quite frankly, maybe you should feel that way.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: What do you think you now need to do to prove yourself as an investor?

LANCE ARMSTRONG: Look– I believe that we’re uniquely positioned because we get early looks at things– we will not be fooled on the product side. I just don’t believe that anybody at NEXT VENTŪRES will be fooled. Because it– this is our world, and it’s not as if we can– we have to guess, right? If it’s any product, we test it. We make sure that it works. So, you have– to us, there’s really three things: there’s the product side, which would– we think we’ll bat a thousand on, there’s the people side, which we like to think that we can pick good people, and people that can lead great companies, and then there’s the story, right, it’s how they tell their story; whether it’s through their own marketing, their own branding, their own packaging. That can easily be fixed, right? That’s the easiest of the three. The people, a little tougher to fix. The product, if it sucks, then we can’t start.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: Is there any product you think you missed? Meaning, a business where you looked– looked at it in your space and thought, “I don’t think that’s gonna work?” And then, a year or two later said, “Man, it– that worked way better than I expected?”

LANCE ARMSTRONG: — If the founder of Peloton came to me five years ago with that idea, I probably would’ve said, “Buddy, you’re crazy.”

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: Peloton? You didn’t think that was gonna work?

LANCE ARMSTRONG: Well, I mean, I– I didn’t– I– I never really thought about it, but– if I put myself in that position five years ago, I– I would’ve thought, “Boy, I don’t know.” I mean, partly because I– I can’t see myself doing that. Like, I couldn’t see myself– I don’t think I’m their target consumer but– or customer. But I probably would’ve passed.

LANCE ARMSTRONG ON NIKE:

LANCE ARMSTRONG: Whether or not I would do it all over again, what I would rather do is go back and win seven in a row against everybody else that’s drinking water and eating bread. That’s what I would want. And I believe that that would happen. And so that isn’t what– that isn’t what got me to this place.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: Right.

LANCE ARMSTRONG: Even if I did all that and I was a gentleman and I had class and I had dignity and I treated people with respect, they would’ve let me off. Nobody would’ve come after me. It was easy.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: You know, in your book, you talk about how EPO saved your life. And I was always curious if you ever thought about the irony of the fact that EPO saved your life, but also may have been, at least professionally, your undoing.

LANCE ARMSTRONG: Right. I insist it was– it was the way I acted. That was my undoing.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: Do you think there’s a double standard between the way you have been treated and the way other athletes have been treated and accepted back into their sport and and society? I’m thinking of A-Rod–

LANCE ARMSTRONG: Yeah.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: –for example.

LANCE ARMSTRONG: I know who you’re thinking about. I think about it all the time. I do think there’s a double standard. But– but I’m okay with it. A-Rod didn’t– A-Rod didn’t raise half a billion dollars and try to save a bunch of people’s lives. I mean, that’s, kind of, the irony in this. But, A-Rod was a baseball player. And so the– this story and what I’m getting at is this story meant so much more to every– to society. Right? And look, it’s great when somebody hits homeruns and you know, maybe does an event here and there for the Girls and Boys Club. But this story held a place in people’s hearts and minds that was way beyond those guys.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: What about the sponsors? So one of the things that I’ve been fascinated by is Nike stood by Tiger Woods through his own problems. Different problems. Nike did not stand by you.

LANCE ARMSTRONG: Right. Because I had a lifetime ban. If what happened to Tiger the next day, they said, “Hey, buddy. I’m sorry, but we’re taking all the golf clubs. You can never hit a ball every again on TV, in a tournament, ever.” They would not have stood by him. I promise you.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: Philip Knight, founder of Nike, was a great defender of Lance Armstrong. Did you ever have a conversation with him after all this happened about this?

LANCE ARMSTRONG: So Phil’s been, interesting. He’s been a great friend. And I have no association with Nike. I don’t wear the product, ever, I mean. But Phil has maintained — he’s continued to be a great friend. I see him every year. We have lunch when I see him. We don’t necessarily talk about this. I mean, I think he has his views on it. And at that point, it didn’t really matter what– I mean, Phil is the founder of Nike and the – really the spirit behind it. But if Mark Parker, the CEO and the CMO and all the– you know, the board says, “He’s out,” it doesn’t matter what Phil thinks.

LANCE ARMSTRONG ON THOM WEISEL:

LANCE ARMSTRONG: Thom’s an interesting guy. And I’m not here to tell on people or throw them under the bus. But yeah, Thom hasn’t been honest.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: Was he complicit–

LANCE ARMSTRONG: Of course.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: –in this?

LANCE ARMSTRONG: We’ll leave it at that. He just wasn’t– he wasn’t– he hasn’t been honest with the press. He wasn’t honest in his deposition in the postal case. He’s just not– he’s just not honest. But—

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: How many other people do you put in that category?

LANCE ARMSTRONG: Very few. Very few. He– he’s, kind of, the yellow jersey when it comes to this.

LANCE ARMSTRONG ON USPS:

LANCE ARMSTRONG: I didn’t think I got off scot-free because the settlement with them for five was probably the tenth settlement. You know, there was– there were all of these cases and the team, unbeknownst to me, had insured most of my pay and most of my bonuses. I knew about one of the insurance companies. But then they just started coming in. It was like, “Who are you?” So net/net, I mean, when you– like, this is gonna shock you. But, you know, once you total up all of it. So loss of guaranteed income, legal fees and settlements, it came to 111 million bucks. So, you know, I didn’t feel like I got off easy.

LANCE ARMSTRONG ON UBER:

LANCE ARMSTRONG: When I met Chris Sacca, he was– I believe he was at either Google or Twitter. And, you know– you know Sacca’s personality. Larger than life and we were having fun and we kept in touch. And then some years later, probably around ’08 or ’09, he left to start his own venture capital fund called Lowercase Capital. And he called me and said, “Looking for investors. Would you invest?” And I’m thinking to myself, “This guy has a huge personality, but he’s also very smart and very well-connected. Why not?” So I invested in Chris Sacca. I didn’t even know that he did Uber. I thought he was buying up a bunch of Twitter shares from employees or former employees and the biggest investment in Lowercase fund one was Uber.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: How w–

LANCE ARMSTRONG: At a valuation of 3.7 million.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: How much money did you give him?

LANCE ARMSTRONG: 100,000 bucks.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: How much is that—

LANCE ARMSTRONG: It’s—

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: –100,000 worth today?

LANCE ARMSTRONG: It’s a lot more.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: What are we talking? Ballpark.

LANCE ARMSTRONG:  No. No. I mean, it’s too good to be true.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: Ten, 20, 30, 40, $50 million?

LANCE ARMSTRONG: It’s one of those. It’s a lot. It’s a lot. It’s saved our family.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: So today, how much do you follow the travails or success, depending on the day, of Uber?

LANCE ARMSTRONG: Very closely. Very, very closely.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: Do you know Travis Kalanick?

LANCE ARMSTRONG: A little bit. Actually, Chris Sacca brought him to one of the tours.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: What did you think when he was ousted?

LANCE ARMSTRONG: God. It’s easy to say, because in hindsight, I think Dara’s done a great job. And, you know, what they’re poised to do is pretty impressive. I can’t like that. Right? I mean, I was that guy. That’s– Travis and Uber is Lance and Livestrong. Right? Is there not some hybrid solution here? You’re out of control. Timeout. But, again, in hindsight, they haven’t missed a beat. And so, I actually worry about Travis. I mean, I’ll email him sometimes, you know, because he’ll say things and I’m like, “Dude, I’ve seen this movie. It’s got a real s*** ending.” And so– of course, his ending has a lot of zeros on it. But, no, you can’t question their decision now.

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: But you saw yourself in him?

LANCE ARMSTRONG: Yes, in the sense that he was– and I get it, man. I get that you– this is your baby and you wanna fight for it and you wanna protect it and you will do anything, say anything, do anything, go anywhere, confront anybody. And in this day and age, you just — in 2018, you can’t.

Men’s underwear is sort of one of those funny topics that doesn’t get a lot of play, yet is worn every day. Underwear was more of a joke when I was growing up, with wacky commercials like Fruit of the Loom being televised and Tighty Whities being the common phrase. Then came the Michael Jordan commercials where underwear became more serious and sexy without the tighty whity sigma, yet still lacked something.

Today companies like 2UNDR have really taken the whole concept of underwear and made it an athletic extension of the body.

At the end of November we attended an expo as media called The Running Event or TRE for short.  There we met two rather unique companies called Endurance Tap (https://endurancetap.com/) and Untapped (https://untapped.cc), who produce maple syrup energy products for athletes.

Now I bet you were thinking “maple syrup? Isn’t that for pancakes and waffles?”  Well as it turns out maple syrup is an excellent all natural sugar source that is an alternative to the many non natural / artificial sugar substitutes and certainly better for you.  There has been countless articles and studies on the effects of artificial sugar substitutes and how they are bad for you.

Endurance Tap Review

Endurance Tap Maple Syrup Energy Gel Packs

In early 2014 Canadians Matt and Pat of Endurance Tap set out on a mission to make an all natural simple digestible food source for endurance athletes.  After testing and several attempts they settled in on just 3 ingredients including proprietary ginger, Canadian maple syrup and sea salt.

As an endurance athlete I can tell you that race day nutrition plays a vital role in overall performance.  Do it right and the glory is yours, do it wrong and a good day can quickly turn sour on you and your stomach.

To help combat race day nutritional issues ginger and sea salt were added to the maple syrup mix.  Ginger aids in settling stomach issues and the sea salt helps replenish lost salts due to sweating.  I have experienced both in an Ironman event and it’s never fun if you’re not able to cope with your nutritional needs and your stomach is going haywire.  Just a little bit of salt can do wonders for your performance after sweating out a lot.

Why Use Ginger?

The word ginger comes from the ancient Sanskrit singabera, meaning ‘shaped like a horn’.  It was first mentioned around the 5th century BC when Confucius wrote about it.   Medicinally it has been used in the West for at least 2000 years and in that time it has shown the capacity to help with various ailments due to it’s anti-inflammatory properties.

Why Add Salt?

During an endurance event, unless you’re walking, you are going to sweat and depending on how fast and far you go, that can be quite a lot.  Performance tends to decline over time with the loss of calories and electrolytes.  The combination of salt and maple syrup helps replenish these losses, allowing you to perform longer and stay stronger.

Endurance Tap Products

Currently Endurance Tap has a single nutritional product that they call the Salted Maple Energy Gel.  In reality it’s syrup rather than a gel, but for marketing purposes it makes sense to call it a gel.  Each gel or syrup pack contains 100 calories, which is roughly the typical amount for an energy gel pack.

Endurance Tap sells the Gels in orders of 6, 12 and 24 at a starting price of $17.35 plus shipping.

Untapped Review

Untapped hails from Richmond Vermont and got it’s start in late 2013 when founders, professional cyclist Ted King and the Cochran family of professional alpine skiers, naturally gravitated to the organic simplicity of maple syrup.

Why Maple Syrup?

  • Maple syrup is low glycemic. Containing all natural sugars, maple syrup provides prolonged, sustained energy rather than offering a quick burst and subsequent crash like many adulterated sports sweeteners.
  • Maple syrup contains Calcium, Riboflavin, Manganese, Zinc, and Potassium. These inherent components of maple syrup promote energy production, muscle recovery, and help prevent cramping.
  • Maple syrup features more than fifty antioxidants. This cocktail of polyphenols have powerful free radical fighting properties. Foods with similar qualities include berries, green tea, red wine, and flaxseeds.
  • Maple syrup contains amino acids, which help prevent muscle deterioration.
  • Maple syrup is water soluble making it easy to digest, quick to absorb, and no more gut-rot from downing chemical-laden energy gels! Plus it’s a cinch to clean up; just rinse with water. Alternative sports gels are like tar to clean up.

Untapped Maple Syrup

Untapped sells both Gel packages and Waffle maple syrup products and have additional flavors including coffee and raspberry.  While the Gel packs contain pure maple syrup, the maple waffles do have other ingredients and oils.

Untapped Gel and Waffle Ingredients

Endurance Tap and Untapped Maple Syrup Energy | Bottom Line

It’s exciting to know there are two companies out there producing great all natural alternatives to energy gels.  For those looking to boost their performance and have had issues with other gel products, these may be your next secret weapon.

As someone who is a big fan of pancakes and waffles and loves maple syrup, I have to say these will probably be my go to products for endurance events.  I love the absolute simplicity of the product and that it is derived naturally from maple trees.  It’s pretty much a win/win.

As far as packaging goes, in a marathon I would probably opt for untapped’s typical gel packaging, but for cycling and ultras, the Endurance Tap resealable caps are really appealing.

Check out both Endurance Tap (https://endurancetap.com/) and Untapped (https://untapped.cc) to gear up for your next big adventure.

Recently I picked up a rather cool cycling organizer known as the Waterfield Designs Cycling Ride Pouch (https://www.sfbags.com).  For those that cycle a lot, carrying your tools and miscellaneous items (keys, license, credit cards, money and a phone) can sometimes be rather annoying.

For most of my life I have used either a saddle bag or a plastic ziploc bag stuffed in my jersey pocket or a combination of both.  Saddle bags are great for carrying tools, but they aren’t as good for quickly accessing money or credit cards.  Plastic ziploc bags are good for carrying all those items, but they fall apart after several uses and everything is sort of jumbled together.

The Cycling Ride Pouch includes a main compartment for tools, an inner pocket for ID or other tool items, an front pocket for a phone and an easy access rear pocket for a wallet, keys and cash.

Waterfield Designs Cycling-Ride-Pouch-Plus-Tools

This year I decided I wanted to be a bit more organized, so I started looking around to see who made cycling organizers.  My criteria was to find some type of bag that could fit in the center jersey pocket and carry all my tools, plus a few other items.  I wasn’t as concerned about carrying a phone, because I usually don’t ride with one.

The Wallet or Pouch would need to be at least 6.5 inches long to accommodate my 6 inch pump, a spare tube, tire levers and a patch kit.  It would also need to have room for keys, money, credit cards and a license.  Room for a phone would be a bonus.

As it turns out Waterfield Designs specifically made the Cycling Ride Pouch with people like me in mind.  They got together the folks at ELEVEN vélo in Australia to collaborate and design a pouch for cyclists.

HISTORY OF WATERFIELD DESIGNS

Gary Waterfield launched San Francisco based Waterfield Designs in 1998.  His passion drives the company to use high quality materials and create items to meet specific needs, rather than create a lifestyle.  Gary proudly stands behind the “Made In The US” label with current production being done at the San Francisco office.

Some of the materials include ballistic nylon, durable waxed canvas, and premium full grain leather. Waterfield also uses more reliable self-locking zippers that don’t break easily, strong D-rings, and oversized magnets to keep flaps in place.

THE CYCLING RIDE POUCH ARRIVES

After talking to Heidi from Waterfield Designs about our desire to review the Cycling Ride Pouch, a package arrived a week later.

Waterfield Designs Package Arrives

The Waterfield Designs Cycling Ride Pouch package arrives.

Waterfield Designs Cycling Ride Pouch 2017

The Pouch came in a plastic bag with a nice post card.  If I were to give any advice, I would change the packaging to make more exciting.  Something to do with cycling.  If you have ever bought anything on Etsy, a lot of time sellers will do a great job packaging their products.  One idea could be to wrap it in a cycling cap.  It might add more to the cost, but that would be rather cool.  Just saying.

Waterfield Designs Cycling Ride Pouch Ziplock bag

Here is the Cycling Ride Pouch next to an old Ziploc baggy.  Notice all my tools are all jumbled together.  Which would you want?  A plastic baggie that you have to continually replace or something that will last many seasons of cycling.

Waterfield Designs Cycling Ride Pouch Tools

Here you can see the tools are a bit more organized and are positioned so that the pouch flap can easily close.  The 270 degree YKK Zipper is nice and makes getting to the tools really easy.  Yes I have already had to change one flat and access to the tools was super easy.

Waterfield Designs Cycling Ride Pouch Jersey

Here is the pouch next to the center pocket of the Jersey.

Waterfield Designs Cycling Ride Pouch Jersey Middle Pocket

This is where the Cycling Ride Pouch hangs out when I am cycling.  I find the pouch is super comfortable and you really don’t notice it.

Word of Warning.  The leather part of the pouch will bleed and stain white and other light clothing if you pour water on your shirt or because you have a high sweat rate.  The good news is, the stain comes right out after a wash.  I am assuming that the leather will eventually stop doing this after extended use.

Heidi at Waterfield Designs told me that to expedite this potential issue take a clean rag (old t-shirts work very well) and give the back of the bag a good rubbing; this should remove any excess oil.  If it is happening inside the case, rub the inside as well. It may take a time or two but others have told us this works very well.  The leather is naturally tanned with vegetable oil, which does wear off over time.

cycling-ride-pouch-back-open-wallet

cycling-ride-pouch-Micro wallet

On the back side of the pouch there is a pocket where you can store things like cash, keys and credit cards.  Waterfield Designs includes a micro wallet to store all these in, which certainly helps in the organization department.  I have used the micro wallet quite a bit and thus far it has kept my cash from getting damp with sweat.

WATERFIELD DESIGNS CYCLING RIDE POUCH | BOTTOM LINE

Waterfield Design has built a real winner with the cycling ride pouch.  The bag/wallet fits perfectly in a typical men’s cycling jersey’s middle pocket.  It holds a ton of items with ease and looks fantastic.  If you’re still going old school with Ziploc bags, you will be transformed once you make the switch.  At $79 retail, the Cycling Ride Pouch is something that is quality made and will last for years to come.  Being made in the US certainly gives it Kudos from us.

Check out Waterfield Designs(https://www.sfbags.com) for the Cycling Ride Pouch and other cool bags.
