Insta360 just hit the market with their very cool INSTA360 ONE R 1-INCH EDITION. That’s right, a 1-inch sensor packed into a super small package.

For those who haven’t been paying attention, insta360 became a household name with their super cool 360-degree camera. Now they have done it again with a modular lego-like camera building system. To top it all off Insta360 teamed up with Leica to create a super stellar lens.

OUR VERDICT

Insta360 has created a novel approach to Action cameras and the Insta360 One R is an impressive offering. The interchangeable modular block system is a game changer.

POSITIVES

NEGATIVES

  • Multiple Options (360, 1-inch, normal)
  • Longer Battery Life
  • Good For Vlogging
  • Future Upgradeable.
  • Smaller Screen

Product-Review-Section-3 2020

For 2020 Insta360 entered the action camera market with its Insta360 One R system. Think of it as your favorite lego action camera. The One R platform is designed to be interchangeable with a 360 setup, a normal action camera setup or a kick-butt wide-angle 1-inch sensor lens setup.

INSTA360-ONE-R-1-INCH-EDITION-IN-DEPTH-REVIEW-Front-View-1

The One R 1-Inch Edition is the top of the line action camera that comes with a huge 1-inch sensor. Something not seen in any other action camera to date other than the Sony RX0. Beyond that, it comes with an F3.2 aperture 14.4mm Leica lens, which blows away anything in its category.

Modular Setup

The One R is made up of a processor module with a touchscreen display, a lens module, and a battery module. Insta360 sells the One R in one of 3 camera lens configurations (Dual Lens, 4K Wide Angle, and 1-Inch 5.3K Wide Angle). For the camera to work the processor module, lens module and battery module all need to be connected.

Vlogging

We all know that Action cameras are built for action, but ever since DJI came out with their forward-facing screen, action camera competitors have been courting vloggers by doing the same. DJI does it right out of the box with the DJI Osmo Action while GoPro opted to create an accessory called the GoPro Media Mod.

With Insta360 One R you have the option to display the screen either in the front or rear based on camera configuration. While it doesn’t provide a dual-screen setup like the Osmo Action, it does one-up GoPro’s single fixed rear screen.

1-Inch Sensor Edition

Insta360 joined forces with Leica to level-up the action cam. The One R utilizes a premium 1-Inch sensor to capture amazing video.

Audio

The ONE R comes standard with a 3.5mm mic adapter making it vlog ready for those who want better audio. You can also purchase an optional top-mounted Accessory Shoe.

The One R also will pair with a RODE Wireless GO and even record audio directly onto Apple AirPods.

GPS-Enabled Stats

The ONE R tracks your movement via GPS allowing you to overlay cool HUD data like speed, altitude, direction, and route. For road and Mountainbike cyclists, this is a welcome feature and can really spice up a video.

FLOWSTATE STABILIZATION

Insta360 uses what they call Flowstate Stabilization, which is similar to the GoPro Hero 8’s Hypersmooth and DJI Osmo Actions Rock Steady. FlowState achieves gimbal-like stabilization without the gimbal. Thanks to a new scene-detection algorithm, your footage stays clear and steady even in low light.

Stabilization in action cameras has gotten really really good, but it does come with one drawback. Anytime you have stabilization turned on the camera’s algorithm does have to perform some cropping, which may or may not be to your liking.

Waterproof

To truly be an action camera, it must be waterproof and the Insta360 ONE R is IPX8 waterproof to 5m (16.4ft), which on the IPX scale, is top-rated for dealing with water, moisture, and the outdoor elements.

*NOTE: ONE R is waterproof after being fully assembled and installed in the included Mounting Bracket.

Here at GearMashers.com we have been really busy learning the ins and outs of Vlogging and producing product reviews.  We wanted the ability to showcase products and cycling related topics using video.

A few years back while researching video production and vlogging, I came across Casey Neistat. For those that don’t know, Casey is a Vlogging superstar on Youtube.  He has over 4 million followers and seems to be one of the best videographers I have come across.

casey neistat 2018

While one of his mottos is “Gear doesn’t matter.  Only the story matters.”, you have to agree that he has learned over the years what equipment can really get the job done and make you look good at the same time.

Gear doesn’t matter.  Only the story matters.

Before you go on and read, you need to watch these two videos.

Casey continues to tweak his craft with the latest technology and occasionally falling back on older more reliable methods.

Still, Casey does have a point that if you don’t have a good story to tell and one that is compelling, your audience might dry up and go away or simply not even show up in the first place. So yeah, a good story will trump equipment almost every time, but good equipment can make a story even more engaging.

So for those of you wanting to really improve your videos, you might want to consider the following Neistat TESTED Casey APPROVED video gear.

  • Canon 70D, 80D, and 5D Mark3
  • Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II, Canon Powershot S120
  • Rode Videomic Pro or Rode Videomic Go
  • Canon Wide Angle (Canon EF-S 10-22mm and Canon EF-S 10-18mm)
  • Joby GorillaPod and ballhead X
  • DJI Phantom 4

While Casey has his personal favorites and I am sure it changes on a monthly basis, I have come up with some pretty stellar products as well.

  • Sony Alpha A7iii – Simply the best 4k digital camera on the market for it’s price.
  • Rode VideoMicro – An amazing small form factor microphone.
  • Sony Zeiss 24-70 F4 Lens – This lens is a workhorse and can handle a ton of video work.
  • Sirui P-324S Monopod – The Sirui Monopod is a monopod that acts like a tripod.  Super easy to setup and video with.
  • Peak Design Everyday Sling – The perfect day bag for carrying all your equipment.
  • WANDRD PRVKE 30L – The best all around photography traveling backpack that I have found to date.
  • Aputure Lighting System
  • Zoom H5 Electronic Recorder
  • Logitech Brio
  • Sennheiser AVX Digital Microphone

Beyond Casey’s recommend gear, I recommend the following if you have the money.

Video

  • Logitech Brio – Great for doing quick reviews and quick videos
Logitech Brio 2018

Audio

  • Zoom H6 – A fantastic Digital Audio Recorder
  • Sennheiser AVX – An Expensive but amazing Wireless Microphone setup
Sennheiser AVX ME2

Lighting

  • Aputure – Light Storm LS 1/2W – Great flood lights
  • Aputure – Light Storm C120 – Fantastic Spot light
Aputure 120

Software and Audio/Video Editing

  • Screen Flow – An inexpensive Audio/Video editor for macs
  • Pixelmator Pro – An inexpensive
  • Premier Pro – An Adobe product used for Audio/Video editing

Note: For those that are Nikon or Sony or Pentax or … fanatics you might want to stop reading, we will mostly be talking Canon stuff here.  Although, maybe you can comment below and give people advice on a similar setup using those manufacturer’s equipment.

DSLR SETUP

It used to be the video camcorder was for shooting video and the camera was for shooting images.  Today however many cameras can operate equally as well as both a video and picture taking device.  While Canon has an excellent camera like the Canon 80D (Sound like Attention Deficit Disorder), some feel (Casey Nesdit included) that the Canon 70D is more reliable and less finicky. As a bonus a refurbished Canon 70D is about half the price.  Now for those wanting a full-frame DSLR the Canon EOS 5D Mark III is pretty spectacular.

Canon-70D-Canon-80D-Canon-5D-Mark-III

While you certainly can’t go wrong with any of the above cameras, those on a budget will find the Canon 70D produces great video and is the least expensive.

What makes the 70D and above stand out is specifically the Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF (Auto Focus) that allows the camera to track and focus quickly on your face while recording. Note: Casey used the 80D and found it to be not as reliable as the 70D.  He also mentions using the 5D, but just hasn’t used it much.

For the money, the Canon EF-S 10-18mm is an awesome value and is the smallest and lightest of the wide-angle lens choices.  It comes in at 1/2 the price of the Canon EF-S 10-22mm and the quality is roughly the same.

Right now Casey’s goto lens is the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM.  It’s light, it’s inexpensive and it’s a technology called a Stepping Motor (STM), which allows the lens to focus smoothly and silently when capturing video.  Sometimes paying more doesn’t always equal better equipment.

Canon-EFS-10-18mm-EFS-10-22mm

Playing around with both lenses, I find the Canon EF-S 10-22mm to be the better-built lens.  The 10-18mm has more plastic including the mounting ring.  You will need 2 different filter sizes if you buy both lenses.  The 10-22mm takes a 77mm filter and the 10-18mm takes 67mm filters.

The 10-22 has internal zooming and the 10-18mm has barrel zooming.

Pros of the 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM are

  • much lower cost
  • image stabilization
  • STM better suited to AF in live view and video.
  • very slightly better CA

Cons of the 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM are

  • smaller maximum aperture (2/3 stop)
  • cheaper build
  • less zoom range (Goes out to 18mm instead of 22mm)
  • slightly more barrel distortion at 10mm (correctable with in-camera lens corrections or DPP)
  • greater vignetting at same apertures (correctable with in-camera lens corrections or DPP)

The 10-22 has a better overall build, but the 10-18 is no slouch and a better bang-for-the-buck.  Almost all the comparisons I have seen thus far the 10-18 performs just as well as the 10-22.

Lower Priced Alternatives

For those without the means or budget for the higher priced DSLRs, another option is to go the compact point and shoot route.  Casey is a big fan of the Canon G7X line.  Canon just released the Canon G7X II and so far the reviews have been really promising.   What makes the G7X II a little nicer than the earlier model is the fact that the II can produce video time-lapse in camera.  A really useful addition for vloggers looking to spice up their videos.

Canon-G7X-II

Other cameras Casey suggests looking at are the Canon S120 (a less expensive model) and the Sony RX100 V.

The Sony RX100 V seems to be a really great point and with its 4k video capabilities, it makes a fantastic backup camera.  It’s a mirrorless camera with a 1-inch sensor.  It has a flip-up screen like the Canon S120 and seems to a much better overall camera.

GoPro

Casey has utilized GoPros throughout his Youtube vlogs and the GoPro 6 line is pretty stellar.  What is neat about the GoPro 6 is it takes time-lapse video and has a rear LCD screen to help navigate the menu.

Mirrorless Cameras

Right now Sony is the King of Full Frame Mirrorless Cameras. With the release of the Sony Alpha a7iii, they basically blew the doors off the competition.

Sony Alpha a7iii

DRONES – THE’RE HERE

Over the last few years one company name has continually been mentioned and that name is DJI.  For those that don’t know DJI seems to be the top consumer drone manufacturer and Casey loves these things.  Drone footage can make an average video become stellar depending on who is flying it and what is being captured.  Casey has a habit of losing, breaking and destroying drones, but lucky for him, he seems to get replacements for free.

DJI Mavic Air

My favorite Drone in the DJI line right now is the DJI Mavic Air. It shoots in 4K and packs up super small for travel.

Drone technology is getting so good that with minimal training you can be up and flying and shooting incredible video.

AUDIO MICROPHONES

While a story is King, sound can sometimes ruin it, be it the background noise or simply not picking up as it should. Casey likes to use two types of Shotgun microphones by Rode.

STORY IS KING

Shotgun Mics

The advantage of using a shotgun means much of the background noise coming from the side and back will be greatly reduced.  You can think of a shotgun mic as a hyper-directional microphone that picks up most of the sound originating in the front.

Rode-Videomic-Go-Rode-Videomic-Pro

While both microphones are good, the Videomic pro in many comparisons evaluations I have seen is better at capturing sound.  The disadvantage of the Videomic pro is it uses a 9-volt battery and has to be turned on to work.  There have been several occasions where I started shooting only to realize the Rode Videomic Pro wasn’t turned on.  The Videomic Go, on the other hand, is designed to be ready any time the record button is press without the need to turn it on.

Other microphones to check out include the Shure VP83 LensHopper Camera-Mounted Condenser Microphone and the Sennheiser MKE400.

Wireless Lavalier Microphones

I find Wireless Lavalier Microphones are perfect when doing product reviews and perform better than using a shotgun mic.  While shotgun mics certainly work, lavalier microphones allow you to move around and not lose audio quality because of where you are talking.

My top choices include

  • Sennheiser AVX ($699.00)
  • Rode’s Rodelink ($599.00)
  • Sony’s UWP-D11 ($399.00)

Check out my review on how to set up wireless microphones.

THE TRIPOD SOLUTION – JOBY GORILLAPOD FOCUS

One of the more innovative ideas Casey Nistat is known for is using the JOBY GorillaPod Focus and Ballhead X.  The JOBY GorillaPod transforms a traditional tripod into an arm grabbing device that you can position in really wacky ways, like hanging from a tree or pole or just about anywhere the GorillaPod legs can wrap around.

At the end of last year, I contacted the fine folks at Moment to see about getting some of their very cool Moment Smartphone Lenses.

Almost everyone these days has a smartphone and it makes perfect sense for vloggers like me to want to use a phone in situations where bringing a traditional vlogging setup is inconvenient. Beyond that smartphones have become quite stellar at capturing video. Combine a smartphone with a Moment lens and the skies the limit.

Moment lenses are small, compact and turn any smartphone into a cinematic powerhouse. Moment has quite a few lenses in their lineup including an 18mm Wide Angle, 1.33x Anamorphic, 58mm Telephoto, 15mm Fisheye, and Macro lens.

Product-Unboxing-Section-1

Moment sent us 2 lenses (18mm Wide Angle and 1.33x Anamorphic lens) and an iPhone camera case used for lens attachment. The lenses are version 2 and have been improved slightly over the version 1 models. The biggest difference in the new M-Series mounting system, which makes it super easy to mount the lenses to the Moment’s smartphone case.

18mm Wide Angle, 1.33x Anamorphic and Camera Case
Each Lens Comes in its own box with a lens bag

Each Moment lens comes with a lens cap and bag.

Product-Review-Section-3 2020

When the lenses arrived they were oozing with quality and feel very professional. Moment uses aerospace-grade metals and hand-polished glass that is often found in high-end film lenses.

M-Series Mount

Moment lenses require an M-series mount, which Moment utilizes in their Camera cases.

Moment-Smartphone-Lenses M-Series Mount

Each lens comes with 2 tabs that lock the lens in place when mounted. Mounting a lens is quite easy and just requires a 90-degree twist-on motion. To remove the lens you simply reverse the process.

Comparing Lenses

I currently own an iPhone XR and with the Moment lenses attached I can create a wider field of view with the wide-angle lens or a more cinematic look with the Anamorphic lens.

iPhone XR Lens
Moment 18mm Wide Angle Lens
Moment 1.33x Anamorphic Lens

Moment Wide Angle Lens

Moment’s Wide-Angle 18mm M-series Lens was designed as an everyday, go-to wide-angle lens for mobile photographers and filmmakers. The cinema quality lens allows you to capture much more of the scenery than your typical smartphone can do.

Moment Anamorphic Lens

Typical lenses shoot a 16:9 aspect ratio, while the Anamorphic Lens captures at 2.40:1 making it ideal for widescreen viewing. In other words, you can capture a super wide-angle image with the inherent shallow depth of field and perspective of a telephoto lens.

The other advantage of an anamorphic lens is it displays a cool horizontal lens flare when taking a picture or video when a bright light source (car lights for example) is in the frame. In the pictures below, the light source was the sun reflecting off of a building.

Today we are taking a look at the very cool GoPro Hero 8 Black or as some call it the HERO8. The Hero 8 is GoPro’s flagship action camera and at present the top to the food chain for amazing stabilization.

GoPro Hero 8 Black In-depth Review | Best Action Camera

OUR VERDICT

The GoPro Hero 8 Black is an impressive offering from GoPro and currently has the absolute best stabilization called Hypersmooth 2.0. The action camera comes packed with advanced features that put it ahead of its competition and previous itterations.

One Key feature that sets the GoPro apart from previous versions is its killer audio recording (3 microphones) and extremely good Hypersmooth stability.

POSITIVES

  • Amazing Stabilization
  • Doesn’t Require A Camera Case
  • No Increase In Price

NEGATIVES

  • No Forward-Facing Screen
  • No Removeable Lens Cap

GoPro Hero 8 Black Unboxing

Unboxing

GoPro packages the GoPro Hero 8 Black in their typical consumer plastic see-through display box.

Inside the box, GoPro includes a User Manual and GoPro Plus ad, 1 USB-C power cord, 1 GoPro Hero8 Battery, 1 sticky mount, a thumb screw and of course the Go Pro Hero 8 Black Action Camera.

OBSERVATION: GoPro’s packaging is top notch and for retailers makes for a very nice display.

One thing that sort of annoys me with both GoPro and DJI is the fact that the action cameras don’t come with a battery charger. I would be willing to pay a bit more for that rather than having to buy it separately.

GoPro Hero 8 Black Review

Review

GoPro officially launched the GoPro Hero 8 Black October 1st, 2019. Almost all the rumors about the GoPro Hero 8 Black we compiled for 2019 came true, well except 120fps at 4k (We could only wish).

New Look

The GoPro Hero 8 Black is a complete redesign from the previous versions including the GoPro Hero 7, Hero 6 and Hero 5.

Hero Black 8 With Battery
GoPro Hero Black 8 With Flipout Brackets

THE GOOD NEWS: GoPro has nailed Video Stabilization with the new Hypersmooth 2.0 and added some really cool features like Timewarp 2.0 and customized presets.

GoPro also improved audio by including 3 microphones.

Lastly, the overall body seems a bit more professional than previous versions.

THE BAD NEWS: With GoPro going to a new body design for the Hero 8, it means older camera cases and other accessories like the GoPro Karma Grip will not work.

Non-removable lens cap. GoPro nixed the ability to remove the lens cap, which many vloggers and videographers have frowned upon.

New Features

  • Larger Body
  • 3 Microphones
  • HyperSmooth 2.0
  • TimeWarp 2.0
  • Improved  HDR
  • Live burst photos
  • Better low light image processing
  • RAW Photos
  • 100Mbps bitrate for 4K and 2.7K
  • Capture presets

OBSERVATION: The GoPro Hero 8 Black has a smaller rear screen than the Osmo Action and doesn’t include a forward facing screen.

Larger Body

GoPro Hero 8 Black Larger Body

GoPro redesigned the GoPro Hero 8 making it a little larger, yet slimmer. The end result is the new GoPro will not be compatible with older cases and products like GoPro’s gimbal, the Karma Grip.

The camera’s lens cover has a lower profile than previous versions due to it’s fixed nature (non-removable). While this change slims down the GoPro, it does come with the disadvantage of not being able to swap out lens covers with new ones or ND filters. Also if you happen to crack or scratch the front glass, you can’t replace it and will have to send it back to GoPro for repair.

3 Microphones

To improve wind noise reduction and enhance audio, GoPro added a 3rd forward-facing microphone to the Hero.

Hypersmooth 2.0 Stabilization

In order to improve stabilization (Hypersmooth 2.0) for the new GoPro Hero 8 Black, GoPro had to redesign the battery. This redesign allowed GoPro to extend Hypersmooth for all framerates, but keep the battery size the same.

Important Note: Previous versions of GoPro batteries will work in the newer GoPro, but users will not have the advantage of being able to use Hypersmooth in all framerates. If your goal is to use Hypersmooth and not have to worry about battery issues allowing or not allowing the Hypersmooth functionality, I would suggest buying the newer GoPro Hero 8 batteries.

There are 4 Hypersmooth settings including (Off, On, High, and Boost). At each setting more cropping is introduced to improve the stabilization of the footage.

GoPro Timewarp 2.0

Gopro has improved Timewarp 2.0 and added a cool feature that allows users to switch between Timewarp and real-time footage. This allows you to create unique Timewarps, switching between fast and normal motion.

Currently, when in Timewarp and during normal recording, the new GoPro doesn’t record audio.

GoPro SuperPhoto + Improved HDR

GoPros are best known for their action camera capabilities, but they are also quite good at taking stills. GoPro has tweaked the SuperPhoto and HDR to make it even better.

GoPro Live Burst

We all have had those moments where we just weren’t fast enough to capture the moment. To help solve this issue GoPro create what they call Live Burst which captures 1.5 seconds before and after you click the shutter button for something like 90 frames of images.

DJI Osmo Action Vs GoPro Hero 8 Black Stabilization (Running Walking)

I like to start off the review with a few comparison video reviews I did between the GoPro Hero 8 Black and the DJI Osmo Action. In the comparisons, I tested stabilization, audio, color and picture quality while walking, running and mountain biking.

GoPro mods will not be available to pre-order until December.

GoPro Hero 8 Black Vs DJI Osmo Action

To date, the biggest competition to the Hero 8 is the DJI Osmo Action.

GoPro is currently leading the action camera market with its Hypersmooth and Timewarp capabilities that currently other action camera’s stabilization methods like DJI’s Rocksteady can’t match.

Where the GoPro falls short against the Osmo Action is not having a forward-facing screen and not having a removable lens cap.

Today we are taking a look at the very cool DJI OSMO Action. The OSMO Action is DJI’s flagship action camera and at present, the only true action camera DJI makes.

OUR VERDICT

The DJI Osmo Action is an impressive offering from DJ and is the absolute best alternative right now to a GoPro. The action camera comes packed with advanced features and in many ways outclasses the GoPro from usability to overall performance.

One key feature that sets the Osmo apart is its forward-facing screen.

POSITIVES

  • Great Stabilization
  • Forward-Facing Screen
  • Price-Point
  • Removable Lens Cap

NEGATIVES

  • Requires Mounting Case
  • No 4:3 60 fps
  • Must Remove Camera From Case To Change Battery

DJI OSMO Action Unboxing

DJI Osmo Action packaging consisted of a no-nonsense box without the fanfare of other competitor action cameras like the GoPro Hero 8. Instead of a see-thru display box, it’s just a white box with an image of the Osmo Action and the DJI logo.

No Frills – DJI OSMO Action display box
Back Of the DJI OSMO Action Box
Open The Box To See The OSMO Action
The OSMO Action comes with a camera case, 2 sticky mounts, a thumbscrew, battery, power cord, mount, and user manual

OBSERVATION: I found the packaging to be adequate, but probably something that I would throw away.

DJI OSMO Action Review

We reached out to DJI about getting our hands on their Osmo Action and soon after a package arrived containing our first DJI product.

We got right to testing but found there was a weird background hum when recording videos and playing back the audio. After talking to DJI’s tech support team, it was determined our action camera was defective, so we sent it back and got a brand new one. We have had zero issues with the 2nd one we received.

Getting Started and Firmware Update

When you receive your OSMO Action the first thing you should do is charge the device. Each camera comes with a battery and a USB to USB-C charging cord.

Next, you will need to download the DJI Mimo App on to your smartphone or iPad. The Mimo app will allow you to download camera firmware upgrades.

To do so

Power on Osmo Action and enter the DJI Mimo app. When there is a new firmware version, you will receive a prompt for firmware upgrading at the top of the DJI Mimo app’s main page.

Click “download” to upgrade immediately.

Due to a large amount of data, you are recommended to download the latest firmware via Wi-Fi. (You can also download directly with mobile data.) . Just follow the Mimo app directions to upgrade the firmware according to the prompts in the app.

OBSERVATION: I found the setup process pretty easy and intuitive.

2 Screen Display

The Osmo Action comes with both a forward-facing screen and a rear-facing screen.

On the left side of the camera, there is a quick switch (QS) button that allows you to switch between viewable screens. Holding the button down you will hear a switching sound that indicates the camera is in forward-facing mode or rear-facing mode.

DJI OSMO ACTION rear-facing screen
Showing Rear-Facing Screen
DJI OSMO ACTION Forward-Facing Screen
Showing Forward-Facing Screen

OBSERVATION: One pain point with the forward facing screen is it tends to be laggy when Rocksteady is turned on. There is a slight delay because the camera is processing cropping via the Rocksteady mode.

Another issue I have is with the dual-screen setup is at least right now you can’t have booth screens on at the same time. You have to click the Quick Switch (QS) button to switch between modes.

Battery Setup

DJI decided to do something a bit different with their Osmo Action batteries. Rather than having a battery door that opens into a battery compartment as the GoPros have, the Osmo Action battery serves as both the door and battery. It’s a brilliant design and makes changing batteries a breeze.

There are 2 battery release buttons that also serve as warning indicators should the battery not be seated correctly. Each button comes with a visual orange strip that if shown means the battery needs to be pushed in further in.

When the battery level falls to 10% or below any time you turn on the Osmo a warning message displays letting you know how much battery charge is remaining.

OBSERVATION: Love the overall design of the battery-door combo.

The biggest negative is if the camera is in a protective case, it has to be removed so that a battery change can take place.

Operation Of The DJI OSMO Action

There are 3 buttons located on the Osmo including a power on/off button, a record button, and a QS (Quick Switch) button.

The power and video record/take picture buttons are located on the top of the camera.

The Display button turns on and off the camera as well as turns on and off the display. To turn on the camera simply hold the power button. To turn off the camera hold the power button. When the camera is turned on clicking the power button will turn the display on or off.

power and video record/take picture buttons

The Quick Switch (QS) button is located on the left side of the camera.

Quick Switch (QS) button

OBSERVATIONS: I really love the button layout of the Osmo. Everything makes sense and works smoothly.

It would be nice to have the option to have both the front and rear screens visible at the same time. Currently, the camera only can show one at a time.

Camera Case

The Osmo comes standard with a plastic protective case that will house the Osmo should you wish to use it.

I have used quite a few camera cases and this case by far is one of the easiest to use and much better than the GoPro cases that come standard with GoPro 7s and previous versions.

The case comes standard with a mounting bracket and thumb screw.

DJI-Osmo-Action-With-Side-Door-Removed
Osmo Action with Side Door Removed

OBSERVATION: While I love the camera case, it does come with 2 obvious issues. You can’t swap out batteries or memory cards while the Osmo is housed.

If you remove the Osmo’s side door before putting it into the case, a cutout will allow access to the USB-C port and memory port. Doing so, however, will mean the camera isn’t waterproof since the door has been removed.

Micro Flashcard and USB-C Charging Port

DJI comes standard with a slot for a micro flashcard and a USB-C charging port. The camera comes equipped with a USB to USB-C cable that can be used to charge the Osmo.

That said, the case does allow for full access to all the buttons

Micro USB and USB-C Charging Port door closed
Micro USB and USB-C Charging Port door open
Osmo Action With Side Door Removed

OBSERVATION: I found the side door easy to open and close. I also had zero problems inserting or removing a micro flashcard.

The side door is removeable which is helpful if the camera is in its case and you need to access the memory slot or USB-C port.

Removable Lens Cap

When GoPro released the Hero 8 Black, its engineers eliminated the ability to remove the front lens cap that had been standard on older GoPros. To me, this was a huge mistake and also created quite a backlash from reviewers.

DJI Osmo Action Screw-on Cap

DJI on the other hand, improved upon what GoPro had done with their previous versions and came out with a screw-on lens cap.

This gives Osmo Action camera users the option to replace the cap with things like ND filters or replacement caps, should the one that comes with it get scratched.

OBSERVATION: DJI’s use of a screw-on lens cap is much easier than previous GoPro screw-on versions and certainly is well received by its user base.

Video Capabilities

With the Osmo Action being an action camera it comes with a ton of video options.

  • 4K (16:9) – 60, 50, 48, 30, 25, 24fps
  • 4K (4:3) – 30, 25, 24fps
  • 2.7K (4:3) – 30, 25, 24fps
  • 2.7K (16:9) – 60, 50, 48, 30, 25, 24fps
  • 1080p – 240, 200, 120, 100, 60, 50, 48, 30, 25, 24fps
  • 720p – 240, 200fps

While many of these options are good, I tend to stick with 4K or 1080. The rub with the Osmo Action is if you have RockSteady turned on, which is DJI’s equivalent to GoPro’s Hypersmooth, cropping will occur. Turning off RockSteady will eliminate the cropping issue, but then you run into stabilization issues.

For those looking for Slow Motion action, the Osmo can do

  • 720p 120, 240fps Speed: 4/8
  • 1080p 120, 240fps Speed: 4/8

I did a few comparisons between the GoPro Hero 8 Black vs DJI OSMO Action and found the 8 to be better overall in performance. That said I always was going back to the Osmo Action because it just felt like a better camera.

OBSERVATION: In both sound quality and stabilization the GoPro Hero 8 was the winner in our test. It was a bit unfair as the Hero 8 is GoPro’s latest offering. If we had compared the GoPro 7 Black to the Osmo Action the results would have been much closer.

My guess is both audio and stabilization will be key features for the next iteration of the Osmo.

Audio

The Osmo comes equipped with 2 microphones including a side microphone and a top microphone.

Side Microphone
Side Microphone
DJI-Osmo-Action-Power-Button-and-Record-Button
Top Microphone

OBSERVATION: In various vlogging tests I conducted, where I recorded both the OSMO Action and the GoPro Hero 8, the GoPro Hero 8 recording was louder and crisper.

Photography Capabilities

While the Osmo is designed for action sports, it still does a pretty stellar job of taking pictures.

  • 1. Single
  • 2. Countdown: 1/2/3/5/10s
  • 3. Timed: 0.5/1/2/3/4/5/8/10/15/20/35/45/65/125s
  • 4. Burst: 3/5/7s
  • 5. AEB: 1/3EV×3, 2/3EV×3, 1EV×3, 1/3EV×5, 2/3EV×5, 1EV5

Here are a few pictures I took indoors in a regular setting without any adjustments straight out of the camera.

Fun water bottles

If you want the simplest and quickest option, leave it on the default JPG setting. If you want more control over your images, choose the RAW option. I nearly always use the JPG option because it’s faster and takes up less disk space.

OBSERVATIONS: To be honest I typically will use my phone for pictures because it’s fast and I usually have it with me. I rarely use my action cameras to take pictures.

Size Comparison and Screen Size

Below are size comparisons between the DJI Osmo Action, GoPro Hero 8 Black and the GoPro Hero 7 Black.

The Osmo has a lower profile, but the lens sticks out further.
The GoPro Hero 8 Black is the thinnest of the bunch
The GoPro Hero 8 Black is the tallest of the bunch
The Osmo Action has the largest Screen Display and the only one to have a
front screen that displays video
The Osmo beats GoPro with a forward-facing screen.
DJI Beats GoPro with a larger rear screen

OBSERVATION: The DJI Osmo Action beats GoPro’s line of Action cameras with a larger rear screen and the only action camera to have a forward-facing screen. The forward-facing screen is really helpful when vlogging.

DJI OSMO Action Updates & New Features

Product - Updates & New Features Section

The DJI Osmo action was the first release for DJI in the Action camera realm and established itself as a direct competitor to the GoPro line of action cameras like the GoPro Hero 7 Black and the GoPro Hero 8 Black.

That said, DJI has released several firmware software updates since the release of the camera.

OBSERVATION: For an OSMO Action 2.0 version I would like to see DJI improve the lag experienced on the forward-facing screen and also improve the Rocksteady stabilization.

GoPro just announced its new lineup of GoPro products including the GoPro GoPro Hero 8, GoPro and the GoPro Media Mod (i.e. Media Module).

We were right on the mark with our Rumored GoPro Hero8 article on the Media Mod.

GoPro-Hero8-Media-Mod-Module-Review

GoPro Media Mod – Module Review

The GoPro HERO8 Black Media Mod turns your new GoPro Hero 8 into a mobile production studio. It features a built-in directional mic and the ever-elusive 3.5mm mic port. That’s right a 3.5mm mic port. I will say that again a 3.5mm mic port. Although since it has a directional mic, you may not need an external mic.

Notice there are 3 ports one being a 3.5mm mic jack.

The Media Mod also comes with 2 cold-shoe mounts to attach external stuff like a mic, lights or an LCD screen.

While the GoPro Media Mod is very cool, there are some other accessories GoPro plans to also carry including an attachable light and an LCD video screen.

No prices or release dates have been set for the Light or LCD screen.

The light output going to be around 200 Lumens.

Technical Highlights

GoPro Media Mod Technical Highlights include:

  • Built-in directional mic delivers crystal-clear audio and reduces wind and ambient noise
  • 2 cold-shoe mounts to attach your favorite lights, mics or LCD screens
  • 3.5mm mic port lets you add an external mic for enhanced audio
  • HDMI-out port to monitor or playback your footage

With the launch of the GoPro Hero8, the Media Mod is a really nice addition and should really satisfy vloggers who have been wanting a GoPro for vlogging and hating the lack of a 3.5mm mic port.

With a retail price of $79, this will be a no brainer.

GoPro Hero 8 is rumored to be released sometime in September if GoPro sticks to their regular refresh cycle of new action cameras.

The Wait is Over

GoPro Officially launched the new GoPro Hero 8 Black on October 1, 2019, and boy is it good. Check out our GOPRO HERO 8 BLACK REVIEW. The bad news is it isn’t available yet. It will be shipping on October 15th and probably hit the stores on October 20th.

If you can’t wait for the Hero 8, get a Hero 7 Black at a discount.

I haven’t been able to get a confirmation yet, but supposedly the GoPro Hero 8 Release Date is October 1st at 9am (10.01.2019) eastern time. As of right now, this is still a rumored release date, but it sounds reasonable and something is happening on that date.

Here is GoPro’s Twitter Account with 10.01.19
Above is an official GoPro image of the new GoPro that looks like the images below, at least with respect to where the GoPro logo is.

Here is the first unofficial look at the possible new GoPro Hero 8. The new action camera looks to have a hot shoe mount and would be able to accept a forward-facing screen and a flash. If true, this would make the GoPro a much more attractive camera for vloggers.

Rumored GoPro Hero 8 First Look

Some new pictures just popped up showing some more angles of the GoPro Hero 8 in some sort of ‘media module. It appears to allow the GoPro to have 2 hot shoe attachments and possibly an external microphone.

The image above also appears to show a hinged mounting plate that is built into the bottom of the GoPro. This would allow you to mount the GoPro without having to have a case.

The battery door has also been moved to the side of the camera versus the bottom.

Chinese sources say the new GoPro Hero 8 will be unveiled on September 2019.

The camera will receive a new housing design and several new accessories: an external microphone, an LED flashlight, an additional screen, etc.

With rumored pictures appearing on the net of the new GoPro Hero 8, it looks like GoPro has revamped the camera a bit. I am not exactly sure what the tube is on the side, but it could be a microphone or microphone port.

Rumored Hero 8 with a forward-facing screen
Rumored Hero 8 with a forward-facing screen.

The new concept Hero 8 looks like it can accept accessories like a forward-facing screen. What would be really cool is if the screen was a dual forward and backward facing.

Rumored GoPro Hero 8 LED Flashlight
Rumored GoPro Hero 8 LED Flashlight

One issue people have been waiting is better low light capabilities and it looks like having a LED Flashlight might help a bit.

According to rumors, GoPro Hero 8 will shoot 4K-video at up to 120 frames per second, and FullHD – up to 480.

The camera will use a new GP2 processor and a new improved lens. The sensor will be with the same resolution of 12 megapixels.

4K 120p video looks somewhat unexpected, however, if you imagine that the bitrate will be at the level of 4K 60p, then it is likely that the processor will cope with such a volume of data. But in this case, the average image quality will drop.

GoPro has been tight-lipped about any release for the Hero 8. When I called their support line, the support staff that answered seemed clueless to any new releases coming out. They kept on pressing me about how I heard about the Hero 8 and acted like they never heard anyone else reference it before.

I also tried to reach out to GoPro’s media relations about the GoPro Hero 8, but so far crickets.

If you have any rumors about the Hero 8 or functionality you want to see, leave them in the comments section.

Before we jump into the GoPro rumors we have to talk a little about the elephant in the room. Namely the DJI Osmo Action Camera.

DJI Osmo Action Camera

DJI Osmo Action Camera
DJI Osmo Action Camera

This year DJI introduced their own action camera, aka the DJI Osmo Action and threw down the gauntlet challenging GoPro for dominance in the Action Camera market.

With this new camera, DJI whipped out some rather cool tricks including a front-facing screen, electronic stabilization called RockSteady and HDR video mode.

Most people who have used the DJI Osmo Action say the camera body is better than the GoPro 7 and feels more professional.

Top GoPro Hero 8 Black Rumors

Two of the biggest complaints and frustrations GoPro Bloggers have is no front screen and no microphone jack.

With DJI Osmo coming out with a front-facing screen, GoPro is now in the hot seat to fire back with their own front-facing screen.

GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter
GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter

GoPro also needs to address audio complaints and add a microphone jack rather than force people to purchase the GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter. Another option would be to provide digital audio capabilities via Bluetooth that would work similarly to the Sennheiser AVX microphone system.

New Body Design

CEO Nick Woodman in the May 2019 conference call mentioned that GoPro would be refreshing their lineup. “I’m happy to share that we’re planning an exciting refreshed lineup at all price points in Q4, including our next-generation spherical camera and an innovative multi-year roadmap that we believe will result in continued momentum, growth, and profitability for GoPro in 2019 and beyond.”.

Nick’s mention of the spherical camera (a.k.a Fusion 2) will certainly excite 360 enthusiasts.

I am quite sure that Nick and GoPro engineers got a good look at the DJI Osmo Action body style and came to the conclusion that the GoPro Hero Black 7 needs a facelift.

Many users complain that the black rubber casing isn’t holding up to usage and tends to look worn out after a few months. In contrast, the new DJI Osmo Action continues to stay fresh looking.

If GoPro decides not to make a front-facing screen on the Hero 8 Black they may opt for a larger rear edge-to-edge screen.

With GoPro moving production to Mexico, it’s almost guaranteed that production will be tweaked to make a new fresher looking GoPro. “In June, we will begin production in Guadalajara, Mexico of our U.S. bound cameras to support sales beginning in the third quarter,” said Brian McGee, Executive Vice President, and CFO. “We expect most of our U.S. bound cameras will be in production in Mexico in the second half of 2019. As stated previously, our decision to move most of our U.S. bound production to Mexico supports our goal to insulate us against possible tariffs as well as recognize some cost savings and efficiencies.”

Hero 8 Black Internal Upgrades

The GoPro Hero 8 Black will certainly have some internal upgrades including a possible new GP2 processor. While HyperSmooth stabilization is really good, it does struggle in low light situations. The new processor should help improve Hypersmooth and boost its capabilities.

PRO TIP: You can smooth out your footage even more (Using HyperSmooth) by using Touch Zoom or set the field of view to Linear to crop your shots before you start recording. This will give your camera an even bigger buffer to use when stabilizing your video.

Hero 8 Black Specs Rumors

  • New chipset (GP2 chip and 4GB memory)
  • Include at least three options: GoPro HERO 8 Black, HERO8 Silver, and HERO8 White. We could also see a new HERO, maybe in the form of a HERO Pro that would be a more professional version with more features.
  • Possibly a new body design. Based on the positive feedback from DJI OSMO Action users, GoPro may opt to change the GoPro camera coating to something more professional feeling rather than the current rubberized coating the GoPro HERO 7 Black has.
  • Could include 8K Video
  • 4K capture at 120fps with HyperSmooth.
  • Improved Hypersmooth, especially if 6K or 8K video is added.
  • Video + Image capture capabilities
  • Mic adapter or bluetooth microphone capabilities.
  • A larger rear screen and possibly a forward-facing screen.

Sony RX100 VII vs Canon Powershot G7X Mark III. For 2019 both Sony and Canon are paying much more attention to the Vlogger crowd and actually came out with cameras specifically targeted for those users.

For a long while, vloggers have been requesting a microphone port the small compact cameras and this year both Sony and Canon delivered. Of course, both cameras come nicely equipt with Flip-up screens for selfie shots.

While it might look super cool to have a big DSLR vlogging rig, it can weigh a ton and isn’t very practical when traveling. Vloggers these days are looking for something much more compact and much more affordable. Both the RX100 VII and the Canon Powershot G7X Mark III are in that sweet spot of a small compact vlogging camera setup.

Sony RX100 VII

The Sony RX100 line has always been pretty stellar and the Sony RX100 VII is no exception. The big improvements this year are the edition of a microphone port and Sony’s Movie Eye AF.

Sony also revved up the RX100 VII video capabilities with even faster autofocus, burst shooting, and improved 4K video stabilization.

  • 20fps blackout-free continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking
  • One-inch, 20.1MP Exmor CMOS sensor
  • Touchscreen LCD that tilts 180-degrees up, 90-degrees down
  • Sony VCT-SGR1 Shooting Grip (Additional Purchase)
  • Active Steady Shot (stabilizatiON)

For vloggers, Sony really hit it out of the park with the new RX100 VII’s capabilities. For those that prefer to take pictures and still have good video functionality, a better option would be the less expensive RX100 VI.

The biggest hurdle Sony will run into is if people are willing to pay the high price tag. At $1,200 retail, the RX100 VII is quite expensive compared to similar cameras. For the same price, you could purchase the brand new G7X Mark III and still have money left over for a GoPro Hero 8 Black (Soon to be released) or a DJI Drone.

Canon Powershot G7X Mark III

Like the Sony RX100 VII, Canon added a microphone port to the G7X Mark III allowing vloggers to use their own external mics for better audio.

Another neat feature is the G7X Mark III’s ability stream to YouTube Live over Wi-Fi. Canon also added new video formats including 4K 30fps video-capture, 120fps 1,920 x 1,080 slow motion, and HDR movie.

Canon also updated the sensor to boost continuous-shooting speeds and autofocus capabilities.

Sony RX100 VII vs Canon Powershot G7X Mark III

When comparing the Sony RX100 VII to the Canon Powershot G7X Mark III there are some stark differences between the two.

The most obvious difference is the price point. The RX100 VII comes in at a whopping $1200 retail vs $750 for the G7X Mark III. Another big difference is the camera reach. While the G7X Mark III zooms out to 100mm, it can’t match Sony’s 200mm reach.

Beyond many of the differences both camera’s support an external mic, thanks to the addition of a microphone jack port and both use a flip-up selfie screen for those who need to see themselves while shooting.

GoPro Fusion 2 Rumors? GoPro made it official and announced that along with their new GoPro Hero 8 Black lineup they would be coming out with a brand new Fusion.

At This Point, We Are Not Sure What The Next Fusion 2 Will Look Like

New GoPro Fusion 2

CEO Nick Woodman in GoPro’s May 2019 1st Quarter Earnings conference call mentioned that GoPro would be refreshing their entire lineup. “I’m happy to share that we’re planning an exciting refreshed lineup at all price points in Q4, including our next-generation spherical camera and an innovative multi-year roadmap that we believe will result in continued momentum, growth, and profitability for GoPro in 2019 and beyond.”.

Layoffs At GoPro

When GoPro launched the Fusion, they thought VR was going to be a big hit.

It really turned out to be a flop and really set back GoPro’s profitability.

In September of 2018, GoPro laid off its staff from Kolor, a 360 software company it acquired.

With the series of layoffs that started in 2017 and continued in 2018 GoPro refocused its efforts and it paid off. GoPro became profitable in the 4th quarter of 2018 when Revenue hit 377 million, a nice 13% increase YOY and the 2nd time GoPro showed a profit.

In January of 2019, Nick Woodman had an interview with PC Magazine’s Jim Fisher and talked briefly about the Fusion and what to expect going forward.

Competitors To The Fusion

Insta360 One X

Probably the biggest competitor in the 360 market right now and possibly the leader is the Insta360 One X. It’s not as bulky as the Fusion and it has some really innovative features like an invisible pole, the ability to be thrown and an easy to use interface.

Insta360 One X vs GoPro Fusion 2
Insta360 One X vs GoPro Fusion 2
Insta360 One X Dart

New Body Design

It’s almost certain that GoPro will revamp the Fusion 2 body to be more compact and versatile. The blocky look and feel of the Fusion just never worked for those looking to use it as an action camera.

Comparing the Insta360 One X to the Fusion and you can probably see where GoPro might go. The fact that the Insta360 One X can be inserted into the Insta360 One X Dart and thrown adds some really cool filming options, that the current Fusion just can’t capture.

Fusion 2 Non-VR Content Driven

For the new Fusion 2, GoPro is going to focus on making it easier to use for the general consumer. Nick specifically stated that the new Fusion 2 would steer away from Virtual Reality and GoPro would concentrate more on non-VR content creation capabilities.

Simply User Experience

One of the main goals for the Fusion 2 will be to simplify the user experience. Nick is betting on consumers loving the fact that they don’t need to aim it at a particular spot to be able to capture amazing videos.

Nick wants to make the whole user experience from the time of capture to final video workflow easier and almost seamless.

The other advantage, of course, will be the amazing stabilization and performance that can’t be matched by existing phones or non-360 video cameras.

Reframing Video

GoPro’s perspective is they want to make it easy on the consumer to reframe the 360 videos without having to mess with reframing video footage. The functionality will be there for those who want it (i.e. Pros), but for the novice having something framed at the time of capture will be important and eliminate the hassle of reframing.

Fusion 2 Stabilization

Nick was quoted in PC Magazine saying “HyperSmooth is very impressive, but we’re not done yet.” This, of course, means GoPro will certainly be ramping up improvements to their HyperSmooth technology and passing it along to both the Hero 8 Black and other GoPro products like the Fusion 2.

GoPro Fusion Capture 5.8K Spherical Video

GoPro updated their Beta Fusion software capture to 5.8K/24fps. This translates into 5.6K when stitched.

  • 5.8K/24p filming or 5.6K when stitched.
  • 5.6K/24fps time-lapse video mode.

What We Know About The GoPro Fusion 2

  • GoPro Is focusing on improved Stabilization (Improved Hyperstabization)
  • Overcapture
  • Less emphasis on VR and in fact probably no emphasis.
  • GoPro is Focused on Ease Of Use
  • Real-Time Stitching (Easier to use)
  • Resolution 5.6K -> 4K video capture 6K maybe more, but would need to add more than 2 lenses
  • Possible Keyframing where an app chooses for the user.

What We Would Like To See For The Fusion 2

  • HDR Video Mode
  • Improved time-shift capabilities
  • Adding some type of Overlays for stats like miles per hour
  • Live Video Mode

Are you looking for an amazing camera backpack?  Well, the Peak Design Everyday Backpack is really going to put a smile on your face.  As a photographer and videographer, I am always on the hunt for great products to protect and transport my gear in style.  One company that continues to bring it is Peak Design.  The team there knows what photographers and video enthusiast want and set out to make products that are usually cutting edge and sought after.

The Peak Design Everyday Backpack is no exception.  It’s quality all the way, with a really elegant intuitive design.  The backpack oozes stylish functionality that photographers are going to love.

REVIEW

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Review

PROS

  • Ease of Use and Access
  • Superb Material
  • Minimalistic Design
  • Looks Fantastic

CONS

  • Price Point
  • Adjustablity
  • Limited Pockets

I got to be honest, a while back I was in the market for a backpack I could travel with. Ultimately I settled on the WANDRD PRVKE backpack.  Unfortunately, the Peak Design Everyday Backpack wasn’t available at the camera store I often visit (Precision Camera), so I didn’t have a chance to check it out.

From my experience what separates the WANDRD PRVKE vs Peak Design’s Everyday Backpack is ease of use.  While the WANDRD PRVKE is an exceptional backpack, the Everyday Backpack is more simplistic in design and as such is quicker to use when on the go.

My view of the 20L Everyday Backpack is that of a day pack, allowing me to carry what I need for short excursions and photo shoots.  The good news is I now own both, so I am covered for extended travel and daily trips.

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Two Sizes (20L vs 30L)

Everyday Backpack 20L vs 30L 20 Liter vs 30 Liter

The Everyday Backpack comes in both a 20L and 30L version.

For most situations, the 20L backpack is the one to get.  It’s a little more manageable and it’s smaller footprint means it’s much easier to handle and carry.

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Color Selections

Peak Design Everyday Backpack 8L Expandiblity

Peak Design Everyday Backpack 8L expandability

The backpack can be expanded an additional 8 liters when fully loaded.

While the Everyday Backpack’s expandability allows you to carry extra gear, it does come with one glaring flaw.  When the bag is fully packed using the additional 8L of space, gaps appear near the top.  These gaps can easily allow rain, sleet, and moisture into the backpack.  If the weather turns sour, it best not to overstuff the backpack when venturing outside.  Backpacks like the WANDRD PRVKE, with their roll top design, prevent this issue from happening, even when overstuffed.

One option that might eliminate moisture from entering the backpack would be to design a roll top flap or zipper flap.

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Weatherproofing

What makes the Peak Design Every backpack stand out is the material used.  Peak Design uses a weatherproof 400D nylon canvas shell with high-density padding, durable water-repellent (DWR) coating impregnated and poly-coated twice on both sides, plus premium weatherproof exterior zippers.  Meaning this backpack is designed for the outdoors and mother nature’s wrath.

The material feels a little rough, but it seems super durable and is able to brush off scratches from tree branches and other sharp objects.

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Loadout

When deciding how to pack your Everyday Backpack, you have a lot of options.  The 20L can carry a large DSLR or Mirrorless camera, multiple lenses, a small drone and drone controller, a 15″ laptop, an iPad and still have plenty of room for accessories like batteries, flash cards, and cords.  The outside pockets can hold a tripod or water bottles or both.  The 30L backpack can hold even more with its extra 10Ls of space.

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Loadout

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Side pocket Access

One of the unique features of the Everyday Backpack is it’s dual side weatherproof zippers, allowing access from either side.  This allows quick access to the main compartment and most of your gear.  When unzipped each side comes with its own zippered compartment, allowing for extra storage of small items including glasses, phones, batteries, flash cards, and cords.

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Velcro Dividers

The Everyday Backpack comes with 3 velcro dividers, which allow full customization of the main compartment.  The padded dividers can be used as a shelf, a cubby or even allow larger items to pass through.

Q&A

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Q&A

Can You Use The Everyday Backpack As A Regular Backpack?

YES – I typically will remove at least one or maybe 2 of the internal dividers when using it as a regular backpack.

Does The Everyday Backpack hold a 15″ laptop?

YES – It is a tight fit though.

How tall of a tripod will fit inside the bag?

I would not recommend carrying a tripod in the bag, but if you do you will probably be able to carry a small 14 or 15-inch tripod.  Bigger tripods should probably be carried in the side pockets.

How do you feel about the padding in this bag?

The padding seems very adequate to carry camera gear including lenses, bodies and other equipment.

Where are the backpacks made?

Unfortunately, they are made in China, which IMO is a negative.

Can you take the Everyday Backpack 20L and 30L on an airplane as a carry-on?

YES – both the 30L and 20L are airline approved by all major airlines.  I have had zero issues traveling with these size backpacks.

Does the Peak Design capture camera clip come with the 20L everyday backpack?

NO – The Peak Design capture camera clip is a separate purchase.

Do you recommend the Everyday Backpack for business travel?

YES – The Everyday Backpack would work as an excellent travel backpack with or without camera gear.  For longer trips, I prefer to use the WANDRD PRVKE 31L because it has more space.

While wearing the backpack, can you access the gear inside without setting the bag down?

YES – The backpack can be swung around and the main compartment can be accessed by unzipping one of the side panels.

How is the 20L of the bag measured?

The liter capacity is measured when the bag is attached at the lowest latch.  The 20L backpack can expand an additional 8 liters, for a total of 28L when attached at the highest latch.

Are the Everyday Backpack’s internal dividers removable?

YES – There are 3 dividers that use velcro to attach to the inside of the bag and they are all removable.

Bottom Line

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Bottom Line

Well that’s it for today.  If you end up buying the Peak Design Everyday Backpack you will not be disappointed.  It’s a great all around backpack for photographers and videographers with super easy access to the main compartment.  The weatherproofing and padding on the backpack give you lots of confidence that everything will be kept safe and secure.

I prefer the 20L for it’s smaller profile over the 30L.  It still has plenty of space and you can even squeeze an additional 8 liters by over stuffing it a bit.  The only real drawback I could find is when and if you do decide to overstuff it, there are gaps at the top that can let rain and moisture in, so just be careful.
