For many Cyclists, saddle sores can be an issue and Chamois Cream can go a long way to prevent it. Today I thought I would talk about that touchy subject and why many cyclists use Chamois Cream or for those in Europe Chamois Creme.

Chamois Cream

In the beginning, there was the “chammy” or to put it more bluntly a leather pad usually made out of sheepskin that cyclists would wear in their cycling shorts to help cushion the bumps they would encounter while riding.

The problem with the leather pads (aka Chammies), is they would very quickly become hardened after several uses. Leather and sweaty workouts simply don’t mix well when you want a soft material. Just like leather shoes and boots need shoe shine polish to keep the leather looking good, the leather Chammy required a cream to keep it soft.

Today cycling short companies use antibacterial high tech materials with form-fitted padding rather than the leather to eliminate friction and chafing and keep things soft for the rider, even after repeated washings.

So it begs the question if cycling shorts don’t have leather pads anymore, why the need for Chamois cream?

What Is Chamois Cream?

Chamois Cream is designed to provide prolonged comfort in the saddle and increase the life of your chamois and your ride time!

Today’s Chamois cream isn’t just about providing softness to a cycling pad it is also designed to reduce or eliminate friction between the skin and clothes. As an added benefit many Chamois Creams contain anti-bacterial ingredients to prevent the buildup of bacteria in cycling shorts.

Do You Need Chamois Cream?

Some people are more prone to saddle sores than others. I tend to fall in the latter category, so rarely need to use it. That said there certainly have been days when I wished I had applied some.

If you cycle a lot, eventually you will run into the dreaded saddle sore, which if severe, can leave you not wanting to bike for a while due to the pain. In worse case scenarios, you may even need medical attention.

I will sometimes get a saddle rash on the inside of my groin area and usually just applying some form of lube in the area solves the problem.

Bike Camps and Upping Your Cycling Mileage

If you are planning on attending a week-long cycling adventure/camp or upping your cycling mileage, it may be a good idea to bring along some Chamois Creme.

Anytime you increase your mileage your body needs some time for adaptation. This is especially true when cycling hot humid weather, where you’re sweating constantly. The Chamois Cream could go a long way to making that adaptation easier and more enjoyable.

How to apply chamois cream

There is no exact science when applying Chamois Cream. The best advice is to grab about a finger-full at a time and apply it to areas of concern. Some people like to apply it to the cycling short’s pad before putting them on, others will just grab a handful and reach down their pants and lather up. In all cases, you will want to wash your hands afterward, otherwise, you will be a greasy mess.

Chamois cream on ME or my chamois pad?

Today most cycling shorts come with fully synthetic pads so there isn’t a real need or requirement to condition it like you would a leather pad. This means you have complete liberty to apply the cream to either the pad or your skin or both.

Recommended chamois creams

While there are a lot of Chamois Cremes on the market, I find that the ones made by cycling companies tend to be pretty good. Here are just a few that I can recommend.

If you have never used a HIPLOK you are in for a treat. The HIPLOK is a wearable waist belt chain lock designed for cyclists. Rather than having to stuff a lock in a bag or carry it somewhere on your bike, the HIPLOK is designed to be worn around your waist just like a traditional belt.

The advantage of wearing it around your waist is the weight (i.e. chain) is equally distributed, making it feel not as heavy. Another advantage is the HIPLOK Gold comes with a reflective casing, which is perfect if you ride in the early mornings or at night.

HIPLOK GOLD Wearable Chain Lock
REVIEW

HIPLOK GOLD Review

HIPLOK Gold is the highest rated lock HIPLOK sells and you can see why. It comes standard with a 12mm hardened steel shackle (Lock) and a 10m hardened steel chain. This makes for a very tough lock to pick, cut and/or break. It certainly can be done given the right amount of time, but most thieves will move on to easier targets.

HIPLOK Gold Shackle

Combine the HIPLOK gold with a HIPLOK DX U-lock and your bike will probably be as safe as it could ever be.

HIPLOK Gold Keys

The HIPLOK comes with 3 replaceable coded keys and can be replaced for ¢$19.47. I found the keys to be super solid and you really feel confident when using them. They are about the beefiest keys I have used for a bike lock.

Make sure to register your HIPLOK and key code in case you lose them. Given the fact that every lock comes with 3 keys, you should have 2 spares in case you lose one.

TIPS FOR LOCKING YOUR BIKE

Tips For Locking Your Bike

When locking your bike I have found it is best to use 2 locks. I like to use a combination of a chain lock and a u-lock. While you can use the top tube to lock the bike to a rack, it is usually better to lock your bike using the downtube or seat tube. If you can combine locking a wheel or both wheels as well, all the better.

Bottom Line

I really like the HIPLOK Gold bike lock. In fact, it is my go-to lock when biking downtown and knowing I will be leaving my bike unattended for a while. While bike theft is possible, it does give me more peace of mind compared to many other locks on the market.

Having a hardened steel chain lock sure beats the heck out of cable locks and while it is heavier, bike thieves will probably move on to easier targets.

I also use a product called HEXLOX to make the bike even more secure.

For those cyclists out there, bike security or the lack thereof can cause major headaches. HEXLOX was created to help solve some of the issues a cyclist may encounter when leaving their bike unattended.

Bike thieves love to steal bike parts and anything that isn’t locked is easy prey. HELOX uses a unique metal bit call a HEXLOX (0.5 of a gram) that can be inserted into a bolt’s HEX opening preventing hex tools from being able to loosen the bolts. Each HEXLOX can be inserted or removed using a specialize HEXLOX key.

HEXLOX and HEXLOX KEY

Once inserted, bike thieves will not be able to easily steal things like saddles, seatposts, and wheels. Combining HELOX with other security measures like U-Locks and chains will provide the best overall protection for your bike when left unattended.

REVIEW

HEXLOX Review

When I first saw HEXLOX, I thought it was a really novel approach to preventing theft. After receiving the kits, I found the whole concept brilliant.

The way the system works is you simply insert one of the HEXLOX 4mm – 6mm bits into the appropriate hex bolt using a special HEXLOX key. Each HEXLOX has a magnetic end that helps adhere the bit inside the bolt. Once fitted properly you turn the key and HEXLOX stays. To remove it, you simply insert the key into the little HEXLOX hole twist and pull the HEXLOX out. It really doesn’t get any easier.

HEXLOXes come in 4mm – 6mm widths and can be mixed and matched based on a bikes setup. They also sell various bolts and skewers if you need those as well.

HEXLOX Mounting

HEXLOX Seat Locked
HEXLOX Seat Locked

Above I added the HEXLOX to the seat rail screw, providing security so the seat will not get stolen. Although I have never had a saddle stolen, this gives me a bit more peace of mind.

HEXLOX Headset Locked
HEXLOX Headset Locked

Next, I added a HEXLOX added to the headset, securing the stem, and fork.

HEXLOX Seatpost Clamp Locked
HEXLOX Seatpost Clamp Locked

I also added a HEXLOX to the seatpost clamp, securing the seatpost from being stolen.

As you can see from above, depending on your bike, you have lots of options.

Based on my experience with using the HEXLOX I have a pretty good idea that it will stop anyone from using hex wrenches to easily steal seats, seat posts, and wheels.

It will not prevent your bike from getting stolen, you will need good locks for that, but it certainly will go a long way to preventing part theft.

Bottom Line

The HEXLOX works great. The only issue I see is if you lose your HEXLOX key and can’t the 3 digit code, you may have a heck of a time removing any bike parts where the HEXLOX has been used.

Check out HEXLOX on their website.

Welcome to our Pinhead Lock Review.  At Interbike a few years back we were introduced to a very cool company called Pinhead (https://pinheadlocks.com) who make really cool products to help secure your bike.  I was immediately fascinated with their lock design since it doesn’t use a traditional key.

Pinhead Locks city-lock-ultimate-pack

Pinhead Locks History

Pinhead was founded in 1997 to make better more enjoyable locks.  The company operates out of Edmonton, AB Canada and distributes their locks to over 20 countries.  Their mission is to improve cycling security and safety with high-quality locks that protect the bike and provide a safer ride.

REVIEW

Pinhead Lock Review

Let’s face it getting your bike stolen is no laughing matter.  Since being in Austin, I have had one bike stolen and have friends who have also had their rides stolen.  In many cases, bikes were left unattended with simple cable locks as the only security.  My bike had one of those big chain locks but still fell prey to a thief.  A couple of my friends had their bikes stolen literally from under their noses as they were walking to them.

It’s just one big hassle having to file a police report, call your insurance company (Hopefully if you have renters or home insurance) and waiting a few weeks to get money to replace your bike.  For many people, their bikes have a certain sentimental value that really can’t be replaced.  The other aspect of course is you feel violated that some punk took something that belonged to you.  All in all not fun.

How To Help Avoid Bike Theft

Pinhead has created a whole ecosystem for bike security including making locking skewers, headset locks, seat locks, a u-lock and an oval lock they call the city lock.  The really cool trick is all these locking devices can be opened with single Pinhead key.

Pinhead Locks keys

When I go for a run around Austin, I will sometimes venture up near the University Of Texas campus.  On these runs, I will often pass bike racks and see an occasional frame missing both wheels and the seat.  The frames always appear properly locked, but everything else was fair game to a thief.  When it comes to theft, bike thieves love quick release skewers and seat posts, especially wheels, since wheelsets can run in the hundreds and even thousands of dollars.

Bike Wheels and Seatpost Stolen

When a thief sees a bike all decked out in Pinhead locks, they may think twice and move along.  Realistically a bike thief is going to have a really hard time figuring out what to do with Pinhead’s lockable skewers and seat post locks.  From my estimation, most bike thieves, especially ones who are looking for a crime of opportunity, aren’t going to have the right tools to really deal with them.

Pinhead Wheel and Seatpost Locking Skewers

Pinhead sells wheel locking skewers for both quick release and thru axle bikes as well as seat post locks, which help prevent wheel and saddle theft.  Now since the skewers aren’t truly locked, a thief could use a metal hole punch and hammer and slowly unscrew the locking mechanism.  That type of attack, however, will take a lot of time and effort just for one wheel or saddle.  The other downside, of course, is it makes a lot of noise as they hammer and potentially draw a lot of unwanted attention.  Now imagine the whole bike is decked out with Pinhead locks and most thieves will move on to easier targets.

2-pack-wheel-locks
Pinhead wheel-locks

Earlier versions of the pinhead wheel locks could be defeated with a Gator Socket (3/8 inch drive and a 3/8 inch drive ratchet), available at most hardware stores.  The steel pins move over and around whatever they are being pressed on and form a tight grip that they can use to turn.

Gator Socket Gator Grips

After the Gator socket attack was discovered, Pinhead came out with Pog security washers to prevent this from happening.  These washers are a free upgrade for any previous Pinhead customers who have the older non-pog locking mechanism.  Currently, this new upgrade is only available for quick-release wheels.  Until Pinhead has a fix for their thru axle wheel security, they could be prone to this type of attack.

pog-security-washers

The Pinhead seat post and headset locks are recessed with a metal ring around them, which I believe thwarts a Gator socket type attack.

Pinhead seatpost and headset locks

Pinhead Key Registration

Pinhead provides key registration should you lose your keys and need replacements.  Pinhead locks use a special key. Each key is engraved with a 9-digit code. It is important that you keep a record of your key code so the key can be replaced if lost.

Bottom Line

Pinhead Lock Review | Bottom Line

Pinhead gets major kudos for designing and implementing a whole array of bike security features.  With prices starting at $59.99 and going to $159.99, there are a lot of options for people to choose from.  We absolutely love how the key mechanism works and makes it rather fun just to play around with it.

As an added bonus, each Pinhead key also comes equipped with a bottle opener, should the need arise.

Are there any downsides?  Replacing any quick release skewers with security skewers does come with a cost and that is removal time and having to bring or use the Pinhead key.   I am not quite certain I would want to add Pinheads locking wheel skewers to my road bike simply because I remove both the front and rear wheel a lot when using my indoor direct drive trainer.

For any anyone who is a regular commuter and leaves their bike unattended for any length of time, having a more secure bike definitely has its benefits and probably outweighs the extra time needed for wheel removal.

Checkout Pinhead (https://pinheadlocks.com) and their entire line of bike security and safety products.

This year Wahoo announced a bunch of new products including the KICKR, KICKR Core, KICKR Climb and the Wahoo KICKR Headwind.  For those that are wondering, the KICKR Headwind is designed as a smart fan and  integrates seamlessly with Wahoo’s heart rate monitors and speed sensors.  Wahoo’s goal is to have a lineup of products that all communicate with each other, making for one heck of an ecosystem.  In fact Wahoo is the only cycling company that currently has such a vast array of products that communicate with each other.

The benefit for a rider who has all these Wahoo products is they are immersed in a more realistic riding experience.  Now of course nothing is going to be as realistic as riding outdoors, but Wahoo certainly is making an attempt to replicate it and thanks to programs like Zwift, they are getting pretty close.

Wahoo KICKR Headwind Unboxing

We received our Wahoo Headwind right after Interbike, actually it was waiting for us when we got back.  When unboxing the KICKR Headwind fan, there wasn’t much to unbox.  Wahoo included an instruction manual and the Headwind unit.  That was it.

Wahoo Fitness KICKR Headwind Setup

The KICKR Headwind is an intelligently controlled fan that uses 1 of 4 methods to adjust fan speed including

  • Heart Rate (Using A Heart Rate Monitor)
  • Speed (Using A Speed Sensor)
  • Manual Control (Using The Wahoo Fitness IOS Application)
  • Manual Control (Using The Fan’s buttons)

👍Communication to the Headwind fan is done via Ant+ or Bluetooth, which adjusts the fan’s wind output as well as receives firmware updates.

Wahoo KICKR Headwind

If you’re using the Headwind in manual mode, you can adjust the fan speed on the front of the fan using the arrow buttons from 25% to 100% in 25% increments.  If you want a little more flexibility on wind speed, you can also use the Wahoo Fitness app and use the slider to set the fan speed from 0% to 100% for more precise settings.

The KICKR Headwind has a set of legs that can be positioned out for use with the KICKR Desk or in.  The fan also has plastic wheels that roll, although I would have liked to see a more robust set, something that are typically used on today’s suitcases and travel bags.

👎I thought the plastic wheels Wahoo uses made the fan seem a little cheap.

Wahoo KICKR Headwind Side Intake

The Wahoo KICKR Headwind comes with side air intake vents

The KICKR Headwind does require power and the power cord wraps around the back of the fan.

👉 While the rear electric cord holder works well, it would have been nice for the plug to have a cord notch in it for holding the cord when not in use.

Wahoo KICKR Headwind Cord

👍 Wahoo claims the Headwind can blow up to 30mph on high, which you can certainly feel.  Speaking of airflow, the unique pattern of wind that comes from the Headwind is designed to mirror a cyclists body, which is almost entirely from the front quadrant.

Wahoo KICKR Headwind Targeted Airflow Pattern

The KICKR Headwind was design specifically to mimic the frontal airflow pattern that would typically be encountered on the road.  In essence it matches the shape and position of a cyclist’s body while riding on a bicycle.

👉 While in theory this sounds reasonable, I found that if I had a towel on my handlebars, some of the wind gets blocked and reduces the overall cooling effect.  For those who sweat a lot, it is almost a requirement to have a towel or two on the bars.  Having a fan that is offset can help eliminate some of the blocked wind, but then that sort of defeats the purpose of the air flow pattern.

Wahoo KICKR Headwind Competition

In doing a bit of research I found there really isn’t any direct competition to the Headwind that communicates via bluetooth and allows you to adjust fan speed based on speed or heart rate.  The closest fan that looks like it would compete on manual mode is the Lasko Pro Performance Blower Fan

While I haven’t used the Lasko fan, many riders claim it to be pretty good and it cost significantly less (roughly $69 vs $250) .

Bottom Line

Overall I think the Wahoo Fitness KICKR Headwind works as promised and delivers a good amount of wind.  The real question is will people be willing to pay the $250 price tag for a fan that realistically can be match by less expensive options.

What gives the Headwind some Kudos is the ability to adjust wind speed based on your heart rate and bike speed.  Realistically though I found that I used the manual control option more than the HR or speed options, which again begs the question, are people going to use those options and if not is the Headwind worth it.

An issue I ran into pertained to my towel being on my handlebars.  The towel placement prevented and actually blocked some of the wind coming from the fan.  Since I am a heavy sweater, it’s all but necessary to use a towel.  That said, when standing up I did find the focused airflow extremely helpful.

  • Speed Control : I found that when climbing as your speed drops, less wind is put out, but normally I get hotter when I climb, so I would want more wind, not less.
  • Heart Rate Control: Heart rate control works well with the Headwind.
  • Manual Control: I found the Wahoo Fitness Application manual control to work great and I had zero issues.

What I would like to see added to the Headwind

Here are a few of items I would love to see added in future product updates or firmware updates.

  • Ability To Cool The Air: I think if the Headwind also had the ability to cool the air and not just blow air, that would be amazing.  Obviously this would require a total redesign and probably jack up the price significantly.
  • Ability To Adjust Airflow based on Watts: I think this should be an easy update where the fan could blow based on watts rather than just speed.  For example I could be pushing up a 8% grade at 300 watts, but only be at 8mph or something like that.  Currently if you have the speed set, the fan might be at the lowest setting.
  • Ability To Adjust Airflow based on Grade:  It would be cool to adjust airflow based on grade, so like above as the grade increases the wind would increase.
  • Extra Outlets: When comparing the Headwind to the Lasko fan, the Lasko fan has 2 optional 120-volt accessory outlets for power.  Seems like a rather cool idea and something that Wahoo could implement.

Rollers are one of those cool training devices that can make for a better rider.  Rollers can improve your balance and smooth out your pedal stroke and improve your form.  Today at Interbike I had a chance to check out Crown Roller who have taken the concept of rollers and did something rather unique.

Crown Roller Rollers

Crown Roller Interbike 2018 Kickstarter

If you own a set of rollers or are thinking about owning them, you’re really going to find Crown Roller’s concept super interesting.

Crown looked to engineering and physics and came up with a design that at first glance makes zero sense.  You see their rollers are higher in the middle and then taper off towards the edges.  This is a radical idea and totally counter intuitive to the way you’d think they should be designed.

The funny thing is it works.  As you ride on these rollers, your wheels will naturally track to the path of least resistance, which happens to be in center of the rollers.  As your wheels drift outward on the rollers, essentially moving down hill, more resistance is applied forcing the wheels to track upward, where there is less resistance.

SAY WHAT!  At first glance it makes zero sense, but it works.

REVIEW

CROWN ROLLER REVIEW

Crown Roller’s made a bold statement saying their rollers “are the most stable rollers you will ever ride.”  Considering rollers have been around since the 1800’s, that is a truly bold statement to make.

Crown Roller Key Concepts

Rollers are one of those tricky devices that take practice to use.  When you first start riding them, it’s very scary.  You feel like you’re going to fly off at any moment.  After a while you become more comfortable, but there are still some days that your comfort level can go from calm to terrified in a spit second as you launch off the rollers or almost wipe out.

Crown Roller hopes their design eliminates some of those terrifying moments by making their rollers more stable to ride on and keeping a bike’s wheels in the center of the rollers.

How it works:  Stability

Crown Roller’s help improve stability by forcing your tire to seek the path of least resistance. The larger diameter section at the center of the roller has the least resistance, so that is where your wheel wants to go.

Here is Shane Miller checking out the Crown Roller booth.

Technical Note: The roller setup uses 3 metal drums, 2 of which use the crowning concept or have a higher center point while the rear roller is raised to produce a level riding surface.

Crown Rollers Front View Interbike 2018

Front View of the Crown Roller. Notice the roller tapers near the end.

Crown Rollers Rear View Interbike 2018

The Rear drum is level across without any taper.

On traditional rollers, the front wheel sits on TOP of the front roller and the rear wheel sits BETWEEN the rear rollers. This causes the rear wheel to dip below your front wheel.  Crown Roller’s (Level-Fit Frame) raises the rear roller so that you ride flat, just like on the road.

For those that still prefer the rear wheel to sit below the front, the rear roller can be lowered to a more traditional position.

Traveling With Your Roller

The guys at Crown Roller pretty much thought of everything with respect to traveling with your rollers.  The front roller railings slide inside the rear railings, like a telescope and reduce the overall length to around 32″.

Crown Rollers Travel Size

Crown Roller Peg Adjustment

The bottom of the rollers have holes so you can size the rollers to fit your bike and also make the rollers smaller for travel.

The railing system uses an index pin and holes to adjust trainer size and a locking pin latches it closed for travel.

Product Specs

Crown Roller Product Specifications

Currently Crown Roller is a kickstarter campaign and they aren’t available for sale at the moment.

  • The rollers are ~20lbs.
  • All total the box it comes in is (33x21x6 inch) weighs 22.6 lbs
  • The rollers have an 85mm center diameter or about 3.35″
  • Resistance – At 5 mph you need about 50 Watts of power.  At 40 mph You need about 350 Watts.  Resistence does also depend on tire pressure, size, drivetrain efficiency etc. Riding on the outside edge of the rollers adds roughly 10 watts of resistance.
  • Retail – $650 (Save $250 by hoping on the Kickstarter Campaign)

Note: For those that want to calculate power, there is a recess in the rear roller for adding a magnet. This allows you to attach an aftermarket adapter like the Elite Misuro B+ that will calculate virtual power without mounting anything to your bike.  The other option of course is to purchase a power meter.

Q&A

Crown Roller Frequently Asked Questions

Do the Rollers Fold up?

NO they don’t, but the frames are designed to slide into each other, like a telescope.

What is the length of the rollers for traveling?

The Rollers can be condensed down to 32″

Bottom Line

If you are thinking about buying rollers, you must put Crown Roller into the mix of contenders.  Their radical approach to roller design will make riding them much more enjoyable and as a result will probably be used more.

Are there any downsides? At the time of this review, the only downside is availability.  The rollers are the real deal and if you are thinking about getting some, these seem to be the ones to get, but they will not be available until later in the year.

You can find out more about Crown Roller on their website (https://www.crownroller.com/)

If you want to save some bank, check out Crown Roller’s Kickstarter.  Signing up will save you some mulla over the retail price.

It’s been a little over year now since I have been using the Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt and so far it’s performed flawlessly.  So rather than write this review as I typically would, I decided to write it and show you how I am currently using the Bolt and what I find extremely helpful.

Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt Review 2018

For many having a cycling computer is as much a part of their bikes as wheels are.  While you certainly can go biking without one, a good cycling computer not only let’s you know your current riding stats (Speed, Distance, Time…), but also allows you to upload those to various cycling programs like Strava for post ride analysis.

Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt Aero Computer Mount

Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt Review 2018 bar Aero Bar End Attachement

Wahoo claims that the ELEMNT Bolt was the first fully aerodynamic GPS bike computer, but don’t let it being a bit more aero con you into thinking it’s going to really help you ride faster.  While it certainly might shave a few seconds or 10ths of a second from your ride, it’s not going to win you a race.

In my case I nixed the provided computer mount for the K-Edge Combo computer mount allowing me to add a NiteRider 950 Lumen light.  Something the Bolt mount couldn’t do.  For those who commute or ride in mixed lighting conditions, this setup is by far the best setup I have found to date.

Rather than having a light on your helmet or handle bars, the light sits below your cycling computer and in the center of your bike’s front wheel.  This is the optimal position for a riding light and once you have setup like this you will not want to go back to anything else.

Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt Fully Wireless

Wahoo ELEMNT App Apple

The Bolt is fully wireless, which means there’s no need to tether up to your laptop to sync ride data, download maps, or update the software.  Everything can be uploaded via WiFi, Bluetooth, or ANT+.

In the past many cycling computers required you to hook them up to a computer to upload or download information.  With the Bolt you simply connect to the Wahoo App and the information is transmitted wirelessly to you phone and then to your Wahoo Fitness account.  It really doesn’t get any easier.

Using the Wahoo ELEMNT App gives you full access to the update what displays on the Bolt.  To use the App you need to power on the Bolt and then launch the ELEMNT app.  The app will then wirelessly connect to the Bolt.

On my Bolt I have 3 screens that are active including a Workout Data Screen, a Climbing Screen and a Map Screen.  These can be turned on or off depending on what you want shown.

Wahoo ELEMENT APP Workout Data 2018

Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt Workout Data Screen

In the Workout Data screen you have all sorts of options as to what you want shown.  My current preference is to display the following fields.

  • Speed
  • Heart Rate
  • Distance
  • Time Of Day
  • Temperature
  • Cadence
  • Average Speed
  • Calories
  • Active Time

Wahoo ELEMNT APP Screen Workout Data

Once your workout screens are setup the way you like, you can increase and decrease the font size during a ride by clicking the right up/down buttons on the Bolt.  As you increase the font less fields display.  As you decrease the font size more fields display.

Personally  I find showing 4 fields to be optimal for viewing.  When you show more fields the font size gets a bit too small to see.

Since I don’t have a power meter, my most important fields I like to view include

  • Speed
  • Heart Rate
  • Cadence
  • Distance

I am sure you have heard of the Tacx Neo Trainer, but did you know Tacx also makes cycling accessories like water bottle cages, trainer mats, and cycling tools.  For 2018 Tacx just introduced the Tacx Ciro Water Bottle Cage.

Tacx Ciro Water Bottle Cage 2018

For most people a water bottle cage is a must on bikes, especially for those who train and/or race on a regular basis.  Here in Austin, if you don’t have a water bottle cage, you will soon realize that was a big mistake, especially in when cycling in the full heat of an Austin summer.

With all the choices out there, most people just settle on the cages that came on their bikes when they purchased them or just bought whatever the bike store had at the time.

Tacx Ciro Water Bottle Cages Arrive

Bianca over at Tacx was kind enough to ship out some of their new Ciro water bottle cages to test out and review.

Their minimal design means they are a little more aero than your average water bottle holders.  It also means they are a bit easier to mount, since one of the mounting screws has no cage obstructing it.  Lastly Tacx uses a combination of Carbon and Glass Fibre to make the cages both light and strong.

The color palette for the packaging is easy on the eyes and looks great.  My initial impression is a preference towards the matte coat over the gloss coat simply because my Felt AR 1 bike is matte.

Tacx Ciro Water Bottle Cage Carbon and Glass Fiber

The Tacx Ciro Cages are made of Carbon and Glass Fibre which makes them super light and strong. Weighing in at 29g.

Tacx Ciro – Standing Out From The Crowd

So what makes the Tacx Ciro stand out from the crowd?  It really boils down to good looks, a minimalist approach and weight.

Tacx’s engineers got to work on designing a water bottle cage with an emphasis on it being light weight, strong and incorporate a minimalist design.  The end result is a carbon reinforced water bottle cage that weighs in at a scant 29g.

In order to keep weight down and still maintain strength Tacx engineers used a combination of a carbon fiber outer with a glass fiber core.

Tacx Ciro Water Bottle Cage Carbon

Tacx offers the Ciro in a multitude of bright colors as well as more traditional colors to match almost anyone’s tastes.

The cages can be ordered in both gloss or matte depending on preference.

Tacx Ciro Water Bottle Colors

The Ciro retails for $19.99, which is an excellent price point for what you get.

Check out Tacx to find more about the Ciro Water Bottle Cage.

I will be testing the Ciro out over the next few months to see how it performs.  Based on my initial impression, it looks to be a winner.
