So you want to mount both a cycling computer and a light to your handle bars, but your current setup isn’t optimal, well then you should check out the K-Edge Pro Combo Mounts.  Currently K-Edge makes mounts for Garmin, Sigma and Wahoo cycling computers and with the K-Edge Pro Combo Mount you can also attach a light or video camera underneath.  It’s definitely the most elegant and functional solution in the market today.

K-EDGE Pro Combo Mounts Niterider

The beauty of the K-Edge Pro Combo mount is it’s location and simplicity.  Having a light attached below the cycling computer removes that unwanted glare on the computer screen that occurs when a light is often attached to the handle bars next to the cycling computer.

K-Edge Pro Combo Mount

K-Edge Gopro Mount interface

K-Edge uses a GoPro mounting system underneath the cycling computer mount, allowing any light or camera that has a GoPro compatible mount to attach to it.

K-Edge History

For those wondering when K-Edge got their start, you will have to walk back in time to 2008 when K-Edge launched their “Chain Catcher” product to help keep the rider’s chain from derailing (falling off).  Since that time K-Edge have developed various solutions to mount both cycling computers and lights.

REVIEW

NiteRider And GoPro Adapter By K-Edge

NiteRider GoPro Adapter and Rail Interface

If you are a NiteRider (https://www.niterider.com) fan like me, K-Edge and NiteRider have teamed and created a solution to mount any NiteRider Rail Interface equipped light to any K-Edge GoPro style mount connection.  NiteRider’s newest Lumina series, fantastic lights by the way, all have the Rail Interface and are compatible with the K-Edge GoPro Mount systems.

When mounting the light you will run into one issue that may or may not bother you.  In order to mount the light in it’s current form, you mount it from the bottom side rather than the top side.

NiteRider LUMINA OLED 1100 BOOST Cycling Light

By mounting the light upside down, you lose the ability to view the power indicator lights and any other information that displays.  A good example would be mounting the NiteRider Lumina OLED 1100 Boost and not being able to see the digital display screen showing battery run times because they are pointed towards the ground.

For me it’s not a big deal since I charge my lights the night before a ride if I know I am going to use them.

Quick Release Solution

As far as I know K-Edge hasn’t created a quick release solution for their K-Edge GoPro mounting system.  When I spoke to K-Edge at Interbike this year, they hadn’t developed anything at that time.   They did come out with a “Go Big” thumb screw that can be tighten with a 4mm hex wrench.  The Thumb screw does add a little bit of safety over a normal GoPro thumb screw since you can tighten it down more with a 4mm hex wrench.

As a commuter who sometimes has to lock up my bike and leave it unattended, not being able to quickly remove expensive lights can leave them exposed to theft.

Currently as long as a thief has a 4mm hex wrench they could easily remove the light from it’s GoPro mounting bracket and walk away with light in hand.

I did find an adapter (SP-Gadgets Clip Adapter for GoPro) that can convert any standard GoPro mount into a quick clip mount.   I contacted the company to get a sample sent out, but as of today I haven’t received anything.  The adapter might solve the Quick Release Issue, but this solution isn’t as elegant nor as aero as the K-Edge non-quick release setup.  Still those looking for a quick release method, the SP clip adapter might work.

Swapping Out Cycling Computers

When purchasing the K-Edge Pro Combo Mount, you specify which cycling computer you own and buy the appropriate mounting system.  K-Edge has color coordinated the different computer mounts to include Black for Garmin, Blue for Wahoo and Red for Sigma.

K-Edge Computer Insert

If you buy a Garmin mount and then replace your Garmin computer with a Wahoo or Sigma, currently you just need to purchase Wahoo or Sigma insert rather than having to buy another K-Edge Pro Combo Mount.

Additionally I highly recommend purchasing the NiteRider Lumina series of lights and the NiteRider GoPro Adapter by K-Edge ($19.99).

NiteRider GoPro Adapter and Rail Interface

The NiteRider light I am running with the the Pro Combo Mount is the Lumina OLED 1100 Boost ($149.99).  It’s a fantastic light that is perfect for early morning or evening rides.  The run time is based on how high the lumens is set, but you can get somewhere between 1:00 – 18:00 hrs depending on power output.

Bottom Line | K-EDGE Pro Combo Mounts

Other than not having a quick release, the K-Edge Pro Combo Mount is the best solution I have seen to mount both a cycling computer and a cycling light and do it in a way that is elegant and functional.

Check out K-Edge (https://k-edge.com) for all their great products.

Today I wanted to talk about the Wahoo Fitness KICKR Bike. For years Wahoo has stood out as a leader in cycling trainers. When Wahoo launched the KICKR trainer at Eurobike it was a game-changer and since then they have come out with a host of trainers for cyclists to enjoy.

For those that are wanting the KICKR Bike, you might be in for a bit of a wait. From the start Wahoo didn’t anticipate the demand and as such has had a long delay on new orders. I was told that most people that order today will not see one for a few months.

OUR VERDICT

There are a lot of indoor bikes and trainers out there, and from our perspective, the Wahoo KICKR bike is undoubtedly one of the top contenders. The sleek design and ability to raise and lower a rider from +20 degrees to -10 degrees is undeniably fun.

POSITIVES

NEGATIVES

  • Look Great
  • Sleeker Profile
  • Very Adjustable
  • Ability to raise and lower from +20 degrees to -10 degrees is undeniably fun.
  • Quite
  • Fun to use
  • Multiple crank arm lengths

  • Cost – With a Price tag of over $3,500, it isn’t cheap
  • A limited supply of test units. Not enough bike stores have these in to try out.
  • Will not fit through some doorways. Doorways need to be over 30″ wide.
  • Not as stable as some of the competitors such as the Wattbike Adam, Tacx Neo Bike, and Stages Bike.

Note: When the Wahoo KICKR was first released back in 2019, there was significant demand for the bike that it was very hard to get and orders were taking up to 2-3 months to process. Definitely check when you order to see how long it will take to get the bike.

Wahoo made the official launch of the KICKR Bike at this year’s Eurobike and made a huge splash in the cycling world. An indoor trainer that competes with the TACX bike

Unboxing

The KICKR Bike arrived in a rather large bike box that was professionally packaged and wrapped. Inside the box, the bike comes mostly assembled and it is quick to setup.

The only thing required for the initial setup was the following

  • Attach 2 leg extenders (Each leg has 2 bolts that need to be screwed in)
  • Add the Handlebars (The handlebars initially come pointed down, so you will need to unloosen the front stem bolts and position the bar as needed.)
  • Insert the Seatpost (You may also need to adjust the seat angle)
  • Add the included pedals or use your own (using a pedal wrench isn’t a bad idea)
  • Plugin the shift cables
  • Adjust fit (You can use the Wahoo app to help you adjust the bike fit to your own bike setup). See the Bike Fit section below.
  • and lastly, plug in the power cord and you are ready to go.

The bike also comes with a user manual.

I was really impress how Wahoo boxed up the bike and the overall packaging. Something companies like Rouge Fitness and many fitness companies could learn from.

REVIEW

Wahoo Fitness KICKR Bike Review

If you are looking for one of the best indoor cycling trainers, the all-new Wahoo Fitness KICKR Bike should be on your list. It comes packed with some of the best technology and functionality to date and incorporates all of Wahoo Fitness indoor trainer expertise. It combines cool features of the KICKR Climb, which I absolutely love and killer settings like the ability to program bike fit, gearing and crank arm adjustment.

Hill Simulation | Elevation Change

What makes the new KICKR Bike unique among most indoor trainers and stationary bikes is its ability to raise and lower based elevation changes.

  • Maximum Simulated Grade: 20%
  • Minimum Simulated Grade: -15%

If you haven’t ridden a trainer that implements hill simulation, it’s a lot of fun. It makes the whole experience more engaging and realistic. When I first saw the KICKR Climb, I thought it could be a little gimmicky, but as it turns out I absolutely loved the functionality. Riding an indoor trainer without hill simulation functionality is now a bit of a disappointment. You just don’t get that instant feedback that you do something like the KICKR Climb or now the KICKR Bike.

Wahoo KIKCR Bike
Wahoo KIKCR Bike

What makes the KICKR Bike climb functionality much different than the KICKR Climb is the actual slope/angle of the bike when climbing or descending.

Instead of raising the front of the bike up and down, the whole bike moves, meaning the rear as well as the front gets angled up or down, which really simulates going up and down a hill. Wahoo achieves this feat by incorporating the riser closer to the center of the bike rather than the front.

Wahoo KICKR Climb Control
Wahoo KICKR Climb Control

You can control the climb functionality manually using the bike’s climb control buttons located on the top of the hood.

NOTE: To disable the Climb functionality, Wahoo includes a deactivate button located on the side of the KICKR bike display.

Bike Fit

One of the key features of using the KICKR Bike is the ability to fully adjust bike fit (TRUE FIT). To make it even easier Wahoo created an amazing App that offers guided instructions on how to set-up the KICKR BIKE and personalize the fit to mirror the geometry of your outdoor bike using 3 different options – professional fit, measure my bike, and measure my body.

The Wahoo True Fit App can be used to take a picture of your bike setup and it will calculate and tell you which settings to use for each component. If you have had a professional bike fit, the App can import setup data from Guru, Trek, or RETÜL.

Wahoo Bike Fit 3 Options

The Wahoo Bike has 6 main points of adjustment including:

  • REACH – The horizontal distance from the front tip of the saddle to the center of the handlebars.
  • STACK HEIGHT – The vertical distance from the center of the bottom bracket to the center of the handlebar.
  • SETBACK – The horizontal distance from the front tip of the saddle to the center of the bottom bracket.
  • SADDLE HEIGHT – The distance from the center of the bottom bracket to the horizontal midpoint of the saddle profile.
  • STANDOVER HEIGHT – The distance from the top tube of the frame to the ground.
  • CRANK LENGTH – The distance from the center of the bottom bracket to the center of the pedal axle.

Here is how I modified the adjustment of the bike.

I started from the front and worked backwards. The stem that comes with the trainer is your typical aluminum stem, nothing too special. There are 4 bolts on the front that can be loosened an tightened allowing you to set the bar angle how you want.

The handlebars can be raised and lowered by opening and closing the first quick release. The 2nd quick release is located on the top tube and can be used to push the front bars closer or further away from the frame. There is a metric ruler / indicator showing you what the current position is relative to the frame.

The 3rd quick release is also located on the top tube and it allows you to move the back portion of the bike, which contains the seat tube, forward and backward. The 4th quick-release controls the seat tube, allowing you to move it up or down, just like you have on a traditional bike.

The Top tube quick releases are turned outward when unlocked and align with the top tube once set. It’s all pretty basic and intuitive.

The cranks have 5 holes and depending on where you put the pedal set the crank length. You can set the pedals from 175mm to 165mm depending on preference. I settled for 172.5, which is a pretty standard setup for a road bike.

Once everything is set, you can raise an lower the overall bike height without messing with the other settings by adjusting the main height adjustment and setting it to the appropriate letter.

All in all I found it was really easy to adjust the bike.

Wahoo Bike - Handlebar adjustment forward and backward
Wahoo Bike – Handlebar adjustment forward and backward

The bike has several levers that allow a user to adjust things like seat post height, seat position (forward/backward along the rails), handlebar height (up/down) and handlebar position (forward/backward). The levers are all quick release, making it easy and fast to switch your fit.

Program Gearing | Ride Your Kit

Imagine your current bike is using a triple chainring or maybe a single front chainring. No problem, the Wahoo Bike can simulate both. Wahoo uses existing industry standards allowing you to customize the bike with your favorite parts, simulating your component’s touchpoints.

This functionality adds so much flexibility to your training and racing simulation. When you train/race on programs like Zwift, you have the ability to experiment using different gear ratios setups to optimize your performance. If you know you’re going to climb steep grades, maybe using a triple chainring setup might be optimal or having a smaller chainring and a larger rear cassette. For time trials may be using a larger front chainring could improve your performance.

Gearing setup isn’t just isolated to the front chainring, you also have options to change the rear cassette and optimize it as well.

Beyond gearing, you also have the ability to virtually set up the type of components you are using including Shimano, SRAM, and Campy. Programmable virtual shifting allows KICKR BIKE to match the gear ratios and functionality of groupsets from leading manufacturers like SRAM, Shimano, and Campagnolo today and possibly others in the future.

Wahoo KICKR Bike Virtual Shifting
Wahoo KICKR Bike Virtual Shifting

Depending on the one selected, The KICKR Bike will mimic the shifting patterns. This helps with muscle memory as you switch between riding the KICKR bike and your outdoor bike with the same components.

Wahoo KICKR Bike Programmable Button
Wahoo KICKR Bike Programmable Button

There are several programmable buttons located on the bike, allowing for options that go beyond shifting and changing gears. One possible option could be to virtually steer the bike in a Zwift environment or have some type of gaming function like shooting.

NOTE: To make everything work properly you will also need to include your weight so that the trainer can correctly calibrate resistance.

Crank Arm Adjustment

The KICKR Bike allows crank arm adjustment from 165, 167.5, 170, 172.5, and 175. Again Wahoo has provided the option to experiment with different crank arm lengths allowing the rider to find the optimal length.

Crank Arm Length Adjustment
Crank Arm Length Adjustment

I typically ride 172.5 or 175 depending on the bike, but I have never really experimented with the different setups, so having that ability is certainly welcome.

Bottom Line

For those that want the best of what is out there right now, you will not be disappointed with the KICKR Bike. That said it does come with a few drawbacks. It is more of a permanent solution to indoor training, meaning it isn’t as easy to move (Weighs 93lbs) and it’s about 3-4 times the costs of a typical trainer ($3,499.99).

Negatives aside, there isn’t a more customizable indoor trainer that matches the Wahoo Bike’s functionality. IMO the closest competitor is the TAXC NEO Bike but doesn’t have the climb functionality.

For many Cyclists, saddle sores can be an issue and Chamois Cream can go a long way to prevent it. Today I thought I would talk about that touchy subject and why many cyclists use Chamois Cream or for those in Europe Chamois Creme.

Chamois Cream
Chamois Cream | Purchase This Poster (https://veloist.com/product/chamois-cream/)

In the beginning, there was the “chammy” or to put it more bluntly a leather pad usually made out of sheepskin that cyclists would wear in their cycling shorts to help cushion the bumps they would encounter while riding.

The problem with the leather pads (aka Chammies), is they would very quickly become hardened after several uses. Leather and sweaty workouts simply don’t mix well when you want a soft material. Just like leather shoes and boots need shoe shine polish to keep the leather looking good, the leather Chammy required a cream to keep it soft.

Today cycling short companies use antibacterial high tech materials with form-fitted padding rather than the leather to eliminate friction and chafing and keep things soft for the rider, even after repeated washings.

So it begs the question if cycling shorts don’t have leather pads anymore, why the need for Chamois cream?

What Is Chamois Cream?

Chamois Cream is designed to provide prolonged comfort in the saddle and increase the life of your chamois and your ride time!

Today’s Chamois cream isn’t just about providing softness to a cycling pad it is also designed to reduce or eliminate friction between the skin and clothes. As an added benefit many Chamois Creams contain anti-bacterial ingredients to prevent the buildup of bacteria in cycling shorts.

Do You Need Chamois Cream?

Some people are more prone to saddle sores than others. I tend to fall in the latter category, so rarely need to use it. That said there certainly have been days when I wished I had applied some.

If you cycle a lot, eventually you will run into the dreaded saddle sore, which if severe, can leave you not wanting to bike for a while due to the pain. In worse case scenarios, you may even need medical attention.

I will sometimes get a saddle rash on the inside of my groin area and usually just applying some form of lube in the area solves the problem.

Rewrite the info below

Bike Camps and Upping Your Cycling Mileage

If you are planning on attending a week-long cycling adventure/camp or upping your cycling mileage, it may be a good idea to bring along some Chamois Creme.

Anytime you increase your mileage your body needs some time for adaptation. This is especially true when cycling hot humid weather, where you’re sweating constantly. The Chamois Cream could go a long way to making that adaptation easier and more enjoyable.

How to apply chamois cream

There is no exact science when applying Chamois Cream. The best advice is to grab about a finger-full at a time and apply it to areas of concern. Some people like to apply it to the cycling short’s pad before putting them on, others will just grab a handful and reach down their pants and lather up. In all cases, you will want to wash your hands afterward, otherwise, you will be a greasy mess.

Chamois cream on ME or my chamois pad?

Today most cycling shorts come with fully synthetic pads so there isn’t a real need or requirement to condition it like you would a leather pad. This means you have complete liberty to apply the cream to either the pad or your skin or both.

Recommended chamois creams

While there are a lot of Chamois Cremes on the market, I find that the ones made by cycling companies tend to be pretty good. Here are just a few that I can recommend.

The Iconic Speedplay Pedal Returns With a Wahoo Upgrade

The New Wahoo Speedplay Line Offers Five Options for Road Cyclists and Triathletes Looking
for High Performance, Dual-Sided Entry, and Pedal-Based Power Measurement

Wahoo is proud to announce the first major refresh of the iconic
Speedplay brand since the pedals were invented in a California garage 31 years ago.
The new Wahoo Speedplay line grows from technology first designed in 1989. Speedplay
pedals are the world’s only high performance pedal designed specifically for road cycling and
triathlon without relying on concepts and technology from other sports — and the only one to
offer approachable dual-sided entry.

Wahoo is also excited to announce the world’s first dual-sided, pedal-based power meter, the highly anticipated POWRLINK ZERO. Refinements across the whole line will improve the performance and durability of Speedplay pedals. Revamped models have lower stack height and better aerodynamics than other systems, as well as adjustable float, spindle-length options, and the premium-level user experience that all Wahoo products are known for

While doing some research on cool bike tools I came across the Topeak Nano Torqbar X, a compact and an easy to use torque wrench.

The Nano Torqbar X gives cyclists a portable torque wrench solution that can easily be carried in a bike bag or even a jersey pocket.

Topeak Nano Torqbar X Unboxing

Product-Unboxing-Section-1

I reached out to Topeak and within a week the Nano Torqbar X arrived in a bright yellow box showing what Topeak refers to as a Torqbar (A metal tube used for the handle) and a plastic case containing a TorqSocket, 2 Torque bits (T20 / T25 Torx), and 3 Hex bits (4mm, 5mm, and 6mm).

Nano Torqbar X
Torqbar X with directions
The Torqbar X contains 5 bits (3 hex and 2 torque bits)
The Torqbar contains 2-bit magnetized holders
The tool can measure torque from 0 to 6 Nm (Newton Meters).

Topeak Nano Torqbar X Review

Product-Review-Section-3

With so many cyclists owning high-end bikes, it makes perfect sense that they should own a torque wrench for measuring Nm (newton meters) or what is referred to as a torque measurement in Nm.

Important Note: The Nano TorqSocket is for measturing torque and tightening only. Using the Nano Torqbar X TorqSocket for loosening hardware will result in loss of calibration and possibly damage the socket.

In reading the directions, which I rarely do, I noticed that the TorqSocket is NOT (repeat NOT) designed for loosening bolts and in fact can be damaged doing so. Its sole purpose is for measuring torque when tightening screws.

Topeak Nano Torqbar X TorqSocket

Don’t make the mistake and assume, like I did, that the TorqSocket can be used for both tightening and loosing screws. Had I not looked at the Warning Section in the mini pamphlet that came with the tool, I would have certainly used it for loosening bolts.

This limits the use of the tool in certain situations where you may
have to loosen a bolt and need the extra reach of the socket’s 2 1/4
inches.  Issues include adjusting bike fit for seat height, bar height
other situations where you may want to make adjustments out while
biking.

When I am out mountain biking I would certainly want a tool that could
either loosen or tighten bolts on the fly. You can use the Torqbar X with the small bits to loosen or tighten bolts, but you lose the extra 2 1/4 inch reach of the TorqSocket, which is a bummer.

Quality And Craftsmanship

The Topeak Nano Torqbar X is a high-quality tool. It is composed of an aluminum metal shell and an engineering grade polymer insert. Topeak uses magnets to hold both the TorqSocket and bits in place when in use.

Hidden Torqbit Compartment

One really nice feature of the Nano Torqbar X is it comes with a hidden compartment that can house 2 of the 5 bits. In most cases, I would probably carry the 4mm and 6mm hex bits and put the 5mm hex bit in the TorqSocket for a total of 3 bits.

Product-Verdict-Section

OUR VERDICT

Initially, I was really excited about the prospects of the Topeak Nano Torqbar X, it’s light and compact, but given the fact that it has limited uses, it wouldn’t be my first choice to bring while cycling.

POSITIVES

  • Great Looking Tool
  • Easy To Use
  • Very Well Built
  • Compact

NEGATIVES

  • Limited Uses
  • Can’t loosen bolts with the TorqSocket without possibly damaging the tool.

A better option would be the Topeak Ratchet Rocket Lite DX or SILCA T-Ratchet and Ti-Torque.

I feel having a ratching tool is more important than a torque tool while out cycling.

The TorqBar X seems better suited for home or shop use given its more limited capabilities.

So you found the perfect cycling shoe manufacturer, but you’re not quite sure what size shoes to order, well here are some cycling shoe charts to help you decide.

From my experience road, cycling shoes don’t fit the way normal everyday shoes fit.  Most cycling shoes are designed to fit snug, so you want to go down a 1/2 to a full size.  So, for example, I generally wear a 10.5 or 11 in everyday shoes, but I wear a 43.5 in road cycling shoes.

Winter cycling shoes are a bit different because you will want to wear thicker socks so the chart below is about perfect.

Ultimately if you can try the shoes on first you’re better off, but that isn’t always an option, especially if you’re wanting some of the high-end cycling shoes that most bike shops don’t inventory.

Cleats – Will You Need To Buy Them?

Most cycling companies don’t include cleats or pedals with their cycling shoes. That is an extra cost that you will have to take into an account. The good news is cycling cleats and pedals usually last longer than the cycling shoes they are attached to. That means you should be able to swap out an older set of cleats with a new set of shoes.

I am a big fan of Shimano pedals and cleats. They have been tested and worn by some of the best cyclists in the world and continue to be very reliable.

FAQ Cycling Shoe Guide

Are cycling shoes true to size?

Most cycling shoes are smaller than dress/street shoes. I usually go down a 1/2 size. The reason is you want a tighter fit for more control on the pedal and also so your feet don’t move around.

Do Sidi cycling shoes run small?

Sidi Shoes are made in Italy and most Italian/European cycling clothing and shoes tend to run smaller than the US equivalents.

Do cycling shoes wear out?

It really depends on the person, but for me personally, I have yet to wear out a pair of cycling shoes. Unlike running shoes, cycling shoes should last you a few seasons of moderate cycling.

Are cycling shoes worth it?

Heck Yeah, they are. Cycling shoes and pedals with cleats (a.k.a. clipless pedals) provide a fantastic platform for cycling and provide you with the ability to pull up on the upstroke giving you more power.

What size should my cycling shoes be?

You want your cycling shoe to feel snug, but not overly so. They should feel comfortable on with the ability to tighten them as needed.

Should I get Cycling Shoes with the BOA lacing system?

I prefer the BOA system to others. They are easy to use, usually easy to tighten while riding and easy to undo after the ride.

Should I buy the most expensive cycling shoes or entry-level or somewhere in between?

When I buy cycling shoes I usually opt for the higher end ones. They are lighter, usually have a better lacing system and almost always look cool.

Is the Cycling Shoe Size Chart Accurate?

I would refer to it as a baseline. Different cycling shoe manufacturers design their shoes to fit the average person, but if you find you have a high arch, a really wide foot or a really narrow foot, you might have to try several manufacturer’s cycling shoes. NOTE: Never buy online unless there is a return policy.

Sidi Alba 2 Cycling Shoe Unboxing

Product-Unboxing-Section-1

We were very excited to get our hands on our very first pair of Sidi’s. Its been a long time coming after making several attempts over the years to get a pair. Let’s just say the wait was worth it.

Unboxing the Sidi Alba 2’s was really easy as the box just contained the cycling shoes and a technical manual. Inside the manual, there were a few Sidi stickers, which was nice.

Not much to unbox. You get 2 shoes and a tech manual.

Sidi Alba 2 Cycling Shoe Review

Product-Review-Section-3

ALBA 2 CARBON CYCLING SHOE

Sidi’s goal with the Alba 2 was to design a lower entry shoe for cyclists that wouldn’t give them sticker shock. While the shoes are still expensive (over $200), they are much less than many other SIDI offerings.

To reduce the price SIDI built the shoes with a single TECNO 3 dial and replaced an additional one with 2 Velcro straps. They went further and used slightly different materials than their higher models use including utilizing a Politex synthetic upper and a Millennium 4 Carbon Sole.

While the materials are of a cheaper grade, performance is still very high and realistically most cyclists probably feel the difference.

OBSERVATION: When first testing out the Alba 2’s I ran into an issue where the top of the tongue was digging into my tibia. As it turns out, most Sidi shoes come with a tongue that is cut in several places leading to the top of the tongue. However, the cuts stop short of the edge of the tongue.

Sidi recommends that if you experience issues like I was describing you can use a pair of scissors to extend each cut to the edge. This allows the top edge of the tongue to flare out and not dig into the top of your foot or tibia. The tongue lays flatter on the top of the foot after this and should eliminate the issue.

Color Choice

The Alba 2 comes in 4 flavors depending on your preference. We received the black/black, which is a classic color and looks great.

Shoe Fit And Performance

The fit, comfort, and quality of Sidi shoes are well known and the Alba 2’s doesn’t disappoint. The quality is top-notch.

Sidi uses a material known as Politex and it fits your feet like only a high-end pair of shoes from an Italian footwear firm can.

In designing the shoe, Sidi uses several overlapping layers with different properties that are compacted into two fabrics, knitted fabric and felt, that are then dyed for long-lasting color retention. The use of Politex means the shoes will be durable and will help resists ripping, tearing, stretching and fading.

“Politex” is made in strict compliance with European regulations and is a totally “green” product.

The Alba 2 has a single mess vent on the bottom of the shoe

The Sidi Alba 2 road shoes use a standard 3-hole drilling pattern and are compatible with 3-hole road cleats and pedals and utilize Look’s Memory Eyelets for easy cleat alignment and replacement down the road.

SIDI TECNO 3 SYSTEM

Sidi uses a single TECNO 3 dial on the Alba 2. This was the first time using the TECNO 3 and I have to say it is very good.

The TECNO 3 comes with a flip-up tab that allows you to add tension and also 2 buttons to loosen tension. The flip-up tab gives you a bit more torque than boa dials do, which I happen to like.

The Tecno 3 system is very similar to the dials featured on other high-end shoes. It comes with a micro-adjustable widget that helps adapt the upper to the shape of the foot for a customized fit. The wire material is non-binding and allows for quick and effortless adjustments on the fly.

If you do run into issues, Sidi is well known for serviceability and the buckles are replaceable if needed.

SIDI TECNO 3 Closed
SIDI TECNO 3 Open with flip tab pointing outward
Adjustable Closure

Velcro Closure System

The SIDI Alda 2 is equipt with 2 Velcro straps that are easy to adjust and change on the fly.

While I do think the Velcro straps work as designed, I prefer the performance of a boa closure system or in this case SIDI’s TECNO 3 SYSTEM.

With that said, the use of velcro straps reduces overall shoe cost, which for many is a really good thing.

Breathability

The Sidi Alba 2 contains quite a few pinholes to allow the shoes to breathe, but it isn’t as breathable as other cycling shoes that come with larger vents.

I would rate the cycling shoes for winter, early sprint, and late fall riding. For summer, the shoes will probably run a bit hot.

The cycling shoes also come with a single screened vent on the bottom, but once you add cleats, it really doesn’t provide any airflow since they cover up the opening.

Sidi-Alba-2-Cycling-Shoe-Review-Carbon-Bottom-Showing-Screen

Suola Millennium 4 Carbon Composite Sole

The Suola Millennium 4 Carbon Composite Sole features injected carbon fiber in a matrix of Nylon, providing more rigidity than a standard nylon sole.

The Millennium 4 Carbon Composite Sole is also more durable, completely non-water-absorbent and mechanically stable, meaning it’s less susceptible to changes in stiffness resulting from aging, prolonged usage, and changes in temperature or humidity.

Sidi-Alba-2-Cycling-Shoe-Review

An anti-slip toe insert and replaceable polyurethane heel pad are incorporated into the Millennium 4 Carbon Composite Sole, for walkability.

Heel Cup Adjustability

Unlike some of the SIDI offerings, the heel cup isn’t adjustable. That said I had no issue and didn’t feel the need to adjust anything.

The shoes come standard with an anti-slip toe insert and replaceable polyurethane heel pad to help improve walkability and add overall durability.

  • Sidi road cycling shoes at an aggressive price
  • Proven stiffness and durability of the Millenium 4 outsole
  • Politex synthetic uppers conform to your foot
  • An upper dial with hook-and-look strap fastening system
  • Sidi shoes set the course for style and performance for all cycling shoes

Silca History

SILCA was founded in 1917 by Felice Sacchi outside of Milan, Italy. SILCA was the first company to put gauges on pumps, the first to produce a true ‘high-pressure’ frame pump and the first to work with revolutionary lightweight material plastic after the end of WWII, and later the first to bring CO2 to roadside inflation. Today SILCA is located in Indianapolis, IN where it continues to build iconic products that utilize the finest materials and craftsmanship available.

SILCA’s T-Ratchet and Ti-Torque Wrench Review

Product-Review-Section-3

A Multi-Tool Kit You can Bring Wherever You Ride

Roughly 70% of damage to high-end carbon components such as seat posts, handlebars and stems happen when making adjustments without using proper torque. This problem is further accentuated by the fact that the majority of adjustments made without torque occur on the roadside or trail.

SILCA-T-Ratchet-and-Ti-Torque-Wrench-Set

The best selling Ti-Torque from SILCA helps to curve the portability challenge by being featherlight, weighing in at a mere 30 grams. The Ti-Torque transforms a highly delicate maintenance function into an easy, highly portable and on-the-go accurate adjustment.

The T-Ratchet Kit is equipped with a torque measuring extender/beam that provides real-time feedback, the Ti-Torque beam has three separate scales on it; 2-6, 3-5 and 4-8. This allows you to more easily see when you’ve reached your desired torque setting.

SILCA’s cycling tool kit allows any cyclist to quickly tighten or loosen screws and since the kit comes with a Newton Meter (Nm) torque beam, you don’t have to worry about over tightening.

POSITIVES

  • Great Looking Tool
  • Easy To Use
  • Very Well Built

NEGATIVES

  • Small NM numbers
  • Nm arrow is hard to see

The Rapha Gilet (http://www.rapha.ccalso known as a Cycling Vest  is designed specifically for cycling, but we have found it to be an excellent running or walking vest.  The Rapha Gilet is by far my favorite layer for spring, fall and winter conditions.  It’s lightweight and packable, so you can bring it just about anywhere.

Rapha Gilet 2017 Review

Rapha designed their gilet for changeable conditions during milder weather. It is windproof, water resistant and perfect for cool mornings, seasonal showers and brisk descents.  Made from an extremely breathable matt fabric, the central back panel uses elasticated mesh for added breathability. At just 115g (medium size) the gilet packs down to fit comfortably into a jersey pocket.

Rapha-Mens-and-Womens-Gilet Cycling Vest 2017 Review

Cut long in the back, the gilet has a shaped or ‘canted’ hem for all-weather protection and the collar has a lower profile at the back for improved riding comfort. The arm holes are faced with extra softshell fabric for reinforcement and cut to allow greater freedom of movement. The gilet has a full-length, off-set zip, making it easy to layer jerseys underneath.

Rapha designed the gilet in two distinct cuts.  A mens version and a women’s version.  The women’s version is extremely flattering curving in around the waist line and flairing out towards the shoulders and hips.  The mens version is more masculine with less curvy lines.

Reflective piping around the arm holes and on the back of the vest helps visibility and there are also reflective Rapha logos on the collar and lower back. The gilet has five rear pockets, positioned to minimize sweating and center weight when loaded. In addition to two large cargo pockets, a rear pump pocket has a rubberized grip for securely attaching a rear light. A zipped pocket with an O-ring puller is perfect for carrying keys and is bonded for a clean finish. The left panel also has a concealed valuables pocket.

Rapha-Softshell-Gillet-Friction Locks

Friction locks on the waist cord allow for easy adjustment on the move and the gilet has two elasticated cargo pockets and an additional front zipped pocket.

The right rear pocket has a buttonhole for an iPod® cable, with stylish pink cable loops running to the shoulder. The hem has a pink drawstring with friction locks for easy adjustment and eyelets for durability. The jacket is finished with a pink hanging loop.
