Runners demand a lot from their gear, and Amazfit delivers with the Cheetah Round. This watch caters to runners of all levels, offering advanced metrics, precise tracking, and seamless integration with the Zepp App. After meeting the Amazfit team at The Running Event, it’s clear they’ve designed the Cheetah Round with purpose, innovation, and runners’ needs in mind.

Let’s break down what makes the Amazfit Cheetah Round stand out.

The Running Event

When I met the Amazfit team at The Running Event in Austin, Texas, it was clear they were passionate about revolutionizing the running watch market. Their booth was buzzing with energy, as they showcased their lineup of cutting-edge wearables, including the sleek Amazfit Cheetah Round. The team eagerly walked me through the watch’s features, from its advanced MaxTrack™ GPS technology to its seamless integration with the Zepp App. What stood out most was their genuine enthusiasm for supporting runners of all levels. They weren’t just selling a product—they were presenting a tool designed to enhance the running experience and help athletes achieve their goals. Their commitment to innovation and the running community left a lasting impression, and I couldn’t wait to put the Cheetah Round to the test.

Unboxing and First Impressions

The Amazfit Cheetah Round comes neatly packaged with a minimalist design aesthetic that reflects its ethos: functional, stylish, and built for performance. Inside the box, you’ll find:

  • The Cheetah Round watch.
  • A magnetic charging cable.
  • Quick-start guide and warranty information.

From the moment you pick it up, the lightweight design (32g without the strap) impresses. Its brushed bezel and crisp AMOLED display strike a perfect balance between sporty and elegant, making it suitable for runs and casual wear alike.

Too Many Features to Cover: A Watch Packed with Possibilities

The Amazfit Cheetah Round is more than just a running watch—it’s a Swiss Army knife of functionality that’s impossible to fully explore in a single review. While I’ll touch on a few standout features here, it’s worth noting that this watch offers a wealth of tools to make your training, daily routines, and outdoor adventures more seamless.

Personal Favorites: Small Features That Make a Big Difference

  1. Multiple Alarm Settings
The ability to set multiple alarms is a game-changer for those of us with busy schedules. Whether you need a gentle reminder to hydrate during a long run, a wake-up alarm for early morning training, or timed intervals for stretching and recovery, the Cheetah Round offers flexibility that adapts to your needs.
  2. Customizable Workout Screens
I loved the freedom to customize workout screens to display the data I care about most. Whether it’s heart rate, pace, distance, or elevation, I could tailor each screen to match my training goals. The process is intuitive, and it ensures that the information I need is always just a quick glance away.
  3. Built-in Light Functionality
For those who train before dawn or after sunset, the built-in light functionality is a thoughtful addition. With just a quick tap, the watch emits enough light to help you see your surroundings or check your gear without fumbling in the dark. It’s a small feature, but one that runners who train in low-light conditions will deeply appreciate.
  4. Quick Access Functions
The Cheetah Round’s quick access options make navigation simple and efficient. Whether it’s starting a workout, controlling music, or checking your stats mid-run, the intuitive interface ensures you spend less time fiddling with settings and more time focusing on your performance.

Beyond What’s Highlighted

These are just a few of the features that stood out to me during my testing, but the truth is, the Amazfit Cheetah Round offers far more than I could cover here. From smart notifications and recovery suggestions to AI-powered coaching and weather updates, the watch is packed with tools to enhance both your running and your daily life. It’s a watch designed to keep up with your lifestyle, no matter how demanding or dynamic it may be. If you’re the type of runner who values versatility and cutting-edge technology, you’ll find this device exceeds expectations in ways both big and small.

Key Features and Benefits

1. Precision GPS with MaxTrack™ Technology

One of the most critical features for runners is GPS accuracy. Amazfit’s proprietary MaxTrack™ GPS technology uses dual-band positioning for exceptional precision, even in areas where other GPS systems might struggle, such as urban environments or trails with dense tree cover. The Cheetah Round consistently outperformed expectations in tracking routes and providing accurate split times.

2. Advanced Running Metrics

The Cheetah Round offers a suite of metrics tailored specifically for runners:

  • VO2 Max: Tracks your aerobic fitness over time.
  • Cadence and Stride Length: Essential for identifying inefficiencies in running form.
  • Pace Analysis: Tracks pace variability, helping runners maintain consistent effort during training and races.
  • Performance Condition: Offers real-time insights into how your body is performing during a run.

3. Seamless Zepp App Integration

The Zepp App enhances the user experience by providing post-run analytics and AI-driven insights. Its standout features include:

  • Training Load and Recovery Time: Helps runners avoid overtraining.
  • AI Coaching: Provides personalized training plans based on individual performance and goals.
  • Workout Summaries: Detailed visualizations of cadence, pace, and heart rate zones.

4. Battery Life That Outlasts the Competition

Battery performance is another area where the Cheetah Round excels:

  • Up to 14 days of daily use.
  • 20 hours of GPS tracking, perfect for marathon training or ultrarunning.

5. Lightweight and Comfortable Design

The soft, sweat-resistant strap is designed with long runs in mind, preventing irritation even during the sweatiest sessions. The lightweight build ensures the watch is almost unnoticeable, reducing distractions while running.

The Amazfit Cheetah Round offers many of the same features as its competitors, often at a lower price point, making it an excellent value for runners on a budget.

In-Depth Analysis

GPS Accuracy in Real-World Conditions

To test GPS performance, I ran in three distinct environments:

  1. Open Road: The GPS was flawless, locking on within seconds and maintaining precision.
  2. Urban Settings: Even with tall buildings and narrow streets, the MaxTrack™ GPS performed admirably, avoiding the “jumping” effect seen in some other watches.
  3. Trail Running: The dual-band system provided consistent tracking, even in wooded areas.

Heart Rate Monitoring

The optical heart rate sensor provided reliable data during steady-state runs. However, like most wrist-based monitors, there was a slight delay in tracking rapid heart rate changes during sprints.

Zepp App Usability

The Zepp App is a major highlight. It organizes data intuitively, allowing runners to quickly review their stats. I particularly appreciated the recovery time suggestions and AI-coaching insights. These features are ideal for structured training or preparing for a race.

Battery Life Experience

The advertised 20-hour GPS runtime held true, even during long weekend trail runs and back-to-back workouts. I didn’t have to worry about charging during the week with regular daily use.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Affordable compared to competitors.
  • Lightweight and comfortable for long runs.
  • MaxTrack™ GPS ensures accuracy in any environment.
  • Deep integration with the Zepp App for personalized training insights.
  • Excellent battery life for daily use and long runs.

Cons:

  • Lacks onboard music storage (though it offers music control).
  • The AMOLED display, while vibrant, could be less visible in bright sunlight.
  • Wrist-based heart rate monitoring, while good, isn’t as precise as a chest strap.

Is the Amazfit Cheetah Round Worth It?

For runners seeking a feature-packed watch without breaking the bank, the Amazfit Cheetah Round is a clear winner. It provides everything you need for training, whether you’re preparing for your first 5K or chasing a marathon PR.

With a sleek design, impressive GPS accuracy, and long battery life, the Cheetah Round holds its own against more expensive competitors. The Zepp App integration is the icing on the cake, giving runners actionable insights to optimize their training.

Verdict: If you’re in the market for a running-focused smartwatch that doesn’t compromise on features, the Amazfit Cheetah Round is a fantastic choice.

Puma Deviate Nitro 2 Elite: A Year of Testing with Exceptional Results

After a year of running in the Puma Deviate Nitro 2 Elite, I’ve found it to be an ideal blend of comfort, performance, and durability that truly sets it apart in the running shoe market. Running 3 to 4 times weekly for distances between 5 and 8 miles, I put these shoes through their paces on a variety of terrains, weather conditions, and run intensities. My typical run starts with a steady pace around 9 minutes per mile and gradually accelerates, finishing my final mile somewhere between 6:40 and 7:20. Through every stage of my run, the Deviate Nitro 2 Elite has delivered consistent, impressive results.

Puma Deviate Nitro 2 Elite

Discovery at The Running Event in Austin, Texas
I first came across the Puma Deviate Nitro 2 Elite at The Running Event here in Austin, Texas, where its sleek design and innovative features immediately caught my attention. The event showcased a range of new and high-performance shoes, but the Nitro 2 Elite stood out for its unique Nitro Foam cushioning and carbon fiber propulsion plate. Trying it out at the event gave me a firsthand feel of the shoe’s comfort and responsiveness, and I knew it had the potential to become a reliable part of my running routine. Puma’s team was available to answer questions and explain the technology, giving me confidence in choosing a shoe that could match my running needs.

Comfort and Cushioning
One of the defining aspects of the Puma Deviate Nitro 2 Elite is its remarkable comfort. The shoe uses Puma’s Nitro Foam technology, which strikes a perfect balance between soft cushioning and responsive support. Unlike some running shoes that can feel overly cushioned and somewhat sluggish, the Nitro 2 Elite feels lively underfoot while still providing enough cushion to absorb impact effectively over long distances. The shoe feels tailored for a natural stride, and even after a year of regular use, the midsole maintains its cushioning properties remarkably well. I can confidently run longer distances without feeling the kind of foot fatigue I’ve experienced with other shoes in the past.

The upper material is breathable and supportive, providing a snug yet flexible fit that molds well to the foot. In various weather conditions, whether cool mornings or warmer days, my feet stay comfortable without feeling overly warm. I haven’t experienced any hotspots or discomfort, which is often a challenge when running in shoes consistently over extended periods.

Fit and Slippage-Free Security
What surprised me the most about the Deviate Nitro 2 Elite is its secure fit. I’ve had issues with slippage in past shoes, but with this model, there’s zero movement inside the shoe, even on my longer, more challenging runs. This no-slip quality adds a level of confidence to my runs, particularly when I pick up the pace or run on slightly uneven terrain. Knowing my foot will stay securely in place allows me to focus entirely on my performance rather than my footwear.

Lacing System
The lacing system deserves its own praise. With some running shoes, I’ve experienced laces coming undone mid-run, causing annoying interruptions, but the Nitro 2 Elite’s lacing system has proven reliable. The laces hold firmly and don’t loosen over time, yet they don’t create any pressure points across the top of my foot. This consistency adds to the shoe’s sense of reliability, as I don’t have to stop mid-run to re-tie or adjust. The lockdown is comfortable and feels just right, not overly tight but secure enough to add to the shoe’s overall stability.

Performance and Responsiveness
If there’s one area where the Deviate Nitro 2 Elite shines, it’s in performance. The responsiveness of the Nitro foam combined with Puma’s carbon fiber propulsion plate creates a smooth, fast feel that encourages speed. From my starting pace of around 9 minutes to accelerating in my final mile to somewhere between 6:40 and 7:20, I’ve felt the shoe support and enhance my performance every step of the way. There’s a noticeable spring when pushing off, which helps me maintain energy and drive forward as I increase my speed.

For those who appreciate an efficient ride, the Deviate Nitro 2 Elite is a fantastic choice. The energy return is tangible; I feel like I’m getting more out of each step, which has allowed me to tackle challenging runs with confidence. Even on days when I’m not aiming for a personal best, the shoe provides a smooth, enjoyable ride that doesn’t fatigue my legs. I’d highly recommend these to anyone aiming to improve their performance or simply enjoy a reliable shoe that can keep up with their goals.

Durability
After a year of use, I’m impressed by how well the Deviate Nitro 2 Elite has held up. Many shoes start to show wear, especially in the outsole, but Puma’s choice of durable rubber has prevented significant wear in my pair. The shoe’s structure remains intact, and there’s no sign of major breakdown in the midsole cushioning. For those who are looking for a shoe that will last through regular weekly mileage, the Deviate Nitro 2 Elite is a solid investment.

Overall Verdict
The Puma Deviate Nitro 2 Elite has become my go-to running shoe for its blend of comfort, security, and performance. It’s rare to find a shoe that not only feels great during the first few weeks but holds its comfort and responsiveness over a full year of running. Whether I’m cruising at a steady pace or picking up the speed, the shoe performs consistently, encouraging me to push myself without sacrificing comfort. For runners who value a supportive, no-slip fit, a secure lacing system, and a shoe that feels as fast as it is comfortable, the Deviate Nitro 2 Elite is an exceptional choice.

Puma Deviate NITRO™ Elite 3

The 2024/2025 Deviate NITRO™ Elite 3 takes Puma’s high-performance standards to the next level, incorporating an even lighter, more responsive midsole that promises a dynamic energy return with each step. Designed with Puma’s advanced NITRO™ Elite foam and an updated carbon fiber propulsion plate, the shoe provides a smoother, more natural toe-off that suits both steady long runs and intense speed workouts. If you’re a fan of Craft’s apparel, the men’s ADV SUBZ VEST 3 will quickly become a favorite. Known for its reliable performance and sleek design, this vest hits the sweet spot for anyone looking to stay warm without overheating during those brisk morning runs.

For anyone already familiar with Craft’s dedication to quality, the ADV SUBZ VEST 3 is another standout addition to their lineup. This vest combines style with high-performance features, making it an ideal choice for dedicated runners or outdoor enthusiasts facing chilly, unpredictable conditions. Here’s a deep dive into why this vest shines.

Price and color

The ADV SUBZ VEST 3 is available in a sleek “Plaster” color, a versatile neutral tone that complements a wide range of running and outdoor gear. This understated hue gives it a modern, minimalist appeal while still providing the high-performance functionality runners expect. At $109.99, the vest offers a great balance of premium materials and thoughtful design details, making it a worthwhile investment for those looking to enhance their outdoor performance wardrobe with reliable wind protection and comfort.

Superior Wind Protection Meets Breathability

One of the main selling points of the ADV SUBZ VEST 3 is the windproof Ventair technology used on the front. Craft has made it a priority to design gear that keeps runners comfortable in cold weather without sacrificing performance. The Ventair design on the front of this vest is highly effective, blocking out even the sharpest gusts, which makes a noticeable difference on those frosty mornings. The bonded 3-layer construction provides a lightweight shield, stopping cold air in its tracks and allowing you to stay focused on your run instead of fighting the elements.

But Craft didn’t stop at windproofing; they also paid close attention to breathability. The back panel is crafted from a blend of brushed recycled polyester and elastane jersey, a fabric choice that provides warmth and softness against the skin while also allowing air to circulate. This thoughtful balance ensures you won’t overheat once you get moving, even during high-intensity sessions. The ADV SUBZ VEST 3 is an excellent choice for maintaining a comfortable core temperature on runs, especially if you often find yourself dealing with variable weather conditions.

Fit & Comfort: Designed for Runners

As a Swedish brand, Craft often leans toward a slim, athletic fit, and the ADV SUBZ VEST 3 is no exception. It’s designed with the runner’s needs in mind, offering an athletic silhouette that’s both practical and flattering. While some might find the European cut a bit snug, this style helps reduce bulk and ensures that the vest moves with you instead of weighing you down. Craft does recommend sizing up if you’re on the fence or between sizes, which can make a significant difference if you’re looking for a slightly more relaxed fit.

The feel of the fabric itself adds another layer of comfort. The brushed polyester back panel has a soft touch, which is ideal for anyone who likes to wear minimal layers. This softness adds an extra dimension of coziness, especially if you’re planning on wearing the vest over a short-sleeve or long-sleeve top without a base layer underneath.

Functional Details for Outdoor Performance

The ADV SUBZ VEST 3 is designed with thoughtful details that enhance its usability. Two zipped side pockets provide convenient storage for essentials like keys, cards, or a small snack—items you want quick access to but don’t want bouncing around in your pockets. This makes the vest practical not just for running but also for hiking or casual use, where having storage for the basics is a plus.

Reflective elements are another thoughtful feature. There’s reflective print on the front shoulders and back, helping ensure visibility in low-light conditions. This is especially beneficial for runners who hit the road in the early morning or late evening when daylight is limited. It’s a safety feature that many runners will appreciate, particularly those who often train solo or along dimly lit paths.

Versatility in Various Weather Conditions

While this vest is perfect for chilly and windy weather, it’s not heavily insulated, which means it’s best suited for moderate cold rather than extreme winter conditions. If you’re heading out in temperatures that dip well below freezing, you may want to add a base layer underneath or pair it with a warmer jacket on top. However, for brisk fall mornings or cool spring days, the ADV SUBZ VEST 3 is a great standalone option.

Another benefit is how well the vest layers with other apparel. Its streamlined design ensures it won’t feel bulky under a larger jacket, which adds to its versatility. For runners looking to get the most out of their gear, the vest’s ability to transition from standalone piece to layering essential makes it a worthy investment.

Sustainability & Craftsmanship

Craft has made strides in using sustainable materials, and the ADV SUBZ VEST 3 is part of that effort, incorporating recycled polyester into its construction. The environmentally friendly approach doesn’t detract from the quality—this vest is still highly durable, able to withstand regular use without wearing down quickly. It’s a great choice for anyone looking to invest in gear that’s built to last while also minimizing environmental impact.

Final Verdict

Craft has delivered another fantastic product with the ADV SUBZ VEST 3, combining the essentials of wind protection, breathability, and comfort in a streamlined design. It’s perfect for runners or outdoor enthusiasts who want lightweight warmth, core protection, and the freedom to move. With its durable construction, reflective safety features, and sustainable materials, this vest proves to be a valuable piece of gear for those chilly days when a bulky jacket would feel overkill.

Whether you’re an early-morning runner dodging cold winds or someone who likes a versatile, comfortable vest for active pursuits, the ADV SUBZ VEST 3 is a great choice. It’s a solid investment in quality gear that performs well across different seasons and adapts to a variety of conditions, so you can keep doing what you love without worrying about the weather.

UltrAspire sent us a fantastic product called the UltrAspire Lumen 600 3.0 Waist Light. Version 3.0 is the third iteration of UltrAspire’s waist racing belts and by far the most advanced.

UltrAspire Logo

For those that love to night run or run in the early mornings before the sun is up, light is key to seeing what’s ahead of you. Before waist light’s your options were headlamps, chest lights or handhelds (flashlight) or a combination of them.

Waist lights change the dynamic of running at night by providing light closer to the ground, making it much easier to see potential hazards.

Unboxing

UltrAspire Lumen 600 3.0 Unboxing

I reach out to Joe over at UltrAspire to get my hands on their new waist light called the Lumen 600 3.0. It’s a beauty of a waist light and I knew I wanted to review it.

The waist light matches up perfectly with another UltrAspire product Joe sent called the UltrAspire Bryce XT Race Vest.

UltrAspire caters to the Ultrarunning crowed making amazing products for racing and training. That said many of their products also can be used for adventure racing, mountain biking, and nighttime activities.

Package Arrives

When the package arrived it came wrapped in bubble wrap. This isn’t the official packaging that one might expect to get once the light becomes available for retail. Ours was a pre-retail model and it was very cool to get it before it hit the retail market.

REVIEW

UltrAspire Lumen 600 3.0 Review

The Lumen 600 requires little setup time. It comes with an adjustable belt and a fatigue-free performance buckle (that’s their words not mine) and a rechargeable battery.

Lumen 600 3.0 Adjustablity

I found the adjustable belt strap and buckle good, but nothing extraordinary as far as setup goes. I suppose the new buckle design helps prevent breakage over time, something I really couldn’t test.

The Lumen 600 gives you the option of wearing a removable pocket or if not needed just the main light setup. People who are weight weenies and aren’t running far may opt to remove the rear pocket. Those who plan on doing longer runs may like the convenience of having an extra pocket.

Beyond adjusting the fit of the light belt, you can also adjust the light’s beam up or down depending on preference. UltrAspire marketing gurus calls it “Perfect Angle”.

IPX7 Aluminum Casing

The battery is housed in an IPX7 aluminum casing. For those that don’t know about IPX ratings, check out my IPX rating article. Needless to say a rating of IPX7 is very high up on the scale. Most consumer electronic fitness products only have a rating of IPX5 or less, so to have an IPX7 is outstanding. It means the light unit should hold up to anything mother nature throws at it. In fact, I can only think of a meteor strike or maybe a tornado that could cause issues. Joking aside, the light is pretty bomb proof.

Charging Your Lumen 600

Ultra Lumen 600 3.0 2019 Charging

As stated earlier, the Lumen 600 comes with a USB to microUSB charging cord. To charge the Lumen you unscrew the cap side that houses the red on/off button. Once unscrewed a micro USB port is revealed. You plug the USB end to a USB charging station and the other end to the Lumen.

A red indicator light displays when the unit is charging and a green when the unit is full charged.

Note: UltrAspire doesn’t include a USB charger with the Lumen. That said, most people have the ability to charge via USB. For those that don’t, you will need to get a USB compatible charging unit. I picked up a pretty cool 10 USB charging device (seen above – Sabrent 60 Watt (12 Amp) 10-Port [UL Certified] Family-Sized Desktop USB Rapid Charger.) from Amazon. It’s very handy.

UltrAspire 3D Lighting

The light output UltrAspire uses what they refer to 3D Lighting. With most lights say a headlamp, shadows from objects on the ground get washed out. Some of this has to do with the height of the light source, but also because the light is roughly on the same level as your eye’s line of sight.

By moving the light source from your head to your waist and away from your line of site, this will naturally cast shadows across whatever subject is laying on the ground creating a 3D effect during nighttime and low light conditions.

Photographers will often employ a similar technique to increase depth in a photo by using external flashes.

UltrApire Lumen 600 3.0 3D lighting

Why 3D Lighting? The things that trip you up when you are trail running at night typically aren’t large rocks or stumps; those are easily seen with a headlamp, but more often little uneven dimples in the ground that aren’t as visible. With UltrAspire 3D Lighting you will see more shadows cast across those uneven surfaces allowing you to have a better understanding of your terrain.

Battery Life and Output

The Lumen 600 with it’s 18650 3.7V rechargeable battery gets roughly 8 hours of battery life and takes about 4 hours to recharge.

When cycling at night I like to use lights that are around 1000 to 1200 lumen. For running you don’t need as powerful of a light simply because you’re not moving as fast. Also the higher the lumen value, the faster the burn time is on your battery. 600 Lumens seems to be a good balance for light output vs battery consumption.

For those who plan on really long runs, say ultras, will want to have multiple rechargeable batteries handy. Most other people can probably get away with just the supplied battery.

Lumen 600 2.0 Vs Lumen 600 3.0

UltrAspire really hit it out of the park with the new Lumen 3.0. The big changes were a reduction in both package size and weight. They also upped the IPX value from XP6 to XPX7, making extremely weather resistent.

  • The light itself is 30% smaller and lighter than the 2.0 version.
  • There is no alignment pin in the 3.0 as was in the 2.0 making battery swaps on the go significantly faster and more intuitive.
  • The power/adjustment button is much larger than the 2.0 version.
  • Removable pocket allows you to carry essentials or strip it down to a race version if you so choose.
  • The output is still 600 lumens however the “Steady Beam” feature helps to keep the light as close to 600 lumens as possible until the battery is very low. This is considered a regulated power output.
  • It is compatible with UltrAspire’s current battery lineup. They will be launching a new UltrAspire 18650 battery which is 3400 mah and is a low amperage output which is sufficient for our lumen strength but doesn’t overuse energy thus making the battery last longer and be more efficient.
  • A new buckle system was added called Race Fit.
  • Reduction in retail price ($159.99 Lumen 600 3.0 vs $179.99 Lumen 600 2.0)
Technical Highlights

UltrAspire Lumen 600 3.0 Technical Highlights

UltrAspire packed a ton of cool features into the Lumen 600 3.0 including

  • The Lumen’s light has a focused center with wide-angle peripheral light for a natural running experience

Bottom Line

If you plan on running, walking or doing any nighttime adventure, you will absolutely love the UltrAspire Lumen 600 3.0. It provides a ton of light and allows you to run as fast as you want without worrying about not being able to see what’s ahead.

Overall I was super impressed with the light system and all the cool updates that UltrAspire implemented with the version 3.0. The engineers got everything right.

If you run on trails with tight corners or like to look off to your left or right, you may want to team up the Lumen with a headlamp.

Check out UltrAspire (https://ultraspire.com) and the rest of there very cool products. You will not be disappointed.

I just got back from the TRE (The Running Event) Expo held here in Austin and was given the Smartwool men’s Merino Sport 250 Wind 1/2 Zip to test out.

OUR VERDICT

Smartwool has created a fantasic piece of kit with its Merino Sport 250 Wind 1/2 Zip. The windproof front provides a fantastic barrier against the cold while other aspects of the garment allow heat dispersion.

POSITIVES

  • Comfortable
  • Great For Cold Weather
  • YKK Zipper With Flatlock
  • Thumbholes In The Sleeves
  • Wool Fabric

NEGATIVES

  • No Pockets
  • Not A Full Zip

Product-Review-Section-3

As one who loves merino wool products, I have to say Smartwool did a fantastic job with the Sport 250.

Key Features

  • Body Mapped Mesh Venting For Men – Smartwool places mesh in key areas to increase breathability and comfort
  • Windproof Front Panel – A windproof panel was added to the front to provide extra warmth and protection in windy conditions.
  • Reflectivity – Reflective material was added to help improve visibility in low light conditions.

Body Mapping

At TRE I got a chance to check out apparel from various companies and one technique that a lot of companies are now using when designing their apparel is Body Mapping.

Smartwool Men's Merino Sport 250 Wind 1/2 Zip Review Body Mapping
Thinner materials used under the arms and on the back.

The body mapping concept has been around in various forms, but companies like Smartwool seem to be getting better at manufacturing their products to take factors like sweat and heat buildup into account. Rather than using the same thickness in materials, different parts of the apparel will have different thicknesses to provide better breathability when worn.

Smartwool is using what they call Minimal Merrow seam construction in the Sport 250. It is designed to provide superior durability while keeping material soft against the skin. The seams are a super tight weave that from my perspective looks legit.

Windproof Front Panel

During the cold days of the year, wind can be really annoying and certainly make you feel uncomfortable. Anything that prevents a windy bite is always welcome. The thing is though if you have too much wind protection you often get overheated.

The Smartwool Smart 250 is a great compromise between wind protection and heat management. The front panel certainly does its job at keeping your chest warm and providing a barrier of wind protection while other parts of the garment allow your body heat to disperse.

When you do heat up, the 1/2 zipped front allows you to control temperature a bit by zipping up or down depending on your needs.

The other day I was clipping along at 6:15 pace on a pretty breezy day and with the zipper down I did feel the wind coming through. That certainly helped with heat management quite a bit.

I found that rolling up the sleeves also helps cool things down. Worst case senario is you simply remove it and wrap it aound your waist. That’s the beauty of layering cloths, you can always take the top layers off.

Merino | Poly Blend

Knitted in Vietnam, Smartwool uses a blend of 56% Merino Wool, 44% Polyester. This blend of materials in the Sport 250 Wind 1/2 Zip helps the fabric move moisture, dry quickly, and hold its shape during high-sweat activities in colder weather.

I do like the fact that the garment is made in Vietnam rather than China.

VERDICT

Product-Verdict-Section

I tested the Merino Sport 250 in some pretty cold windy conditions and it worked great. The front panel really helped to block the wind and take the bite out of the cold. With its double-layer, you simply don’t feel the wind like you would if it was single-layered.

If I were to add anything, it might be a small pocket in the rear or on the side to carry car keys. Other than that it’s a great piece of kit that any runner or cyclist should consider.

REVIEW

Gore R5 Gore-TEX Infinium Soft Lined Hooded Jacket Review

Gore’s use of Infinium, a strong, synthetic polymer (ePTFE) already inside the membrane of GORE-TEX supposedly changes the feel to be a bit more comfortable. Unlike full GORE-TEX, the ePTFE coating is weather resistant rather than fully waterproof. The upside is the jacket breaths better than its fully GORE-TEX counterpart.

A huge innovation in performance outer layers, this Infinium Soft Lined Hoodie remains extremely light, soft and comfortable and ensures the body stays warm and temperature regulated when you work out. Alongside premium next-to-skin comfort, this hooded jacket will be a go-to favorite.

You can really see the water beading in the above 3 images. I took the jacket out on a misty morning run where the temps were in the low 40’s. The jacket performed flawlessly and kept me dry and toasty.

It’s a bit hard to showcase, but the jacket gives me the impression of a superhero or maybe Judge Dredd’s costume because of its shine.

The Jacket does everything you would want from a running jacket, paring outstanding functionality with a classic, elegant design. This means that not only is it an option for running and trail running at any level, but it can also be paired with denim for everyday life.

Infinium Technology

This Jacket is the first to use Gore’s new Infinium technology, which pairs Gore Film on the outside of the jacket with a soft backer on the inside. This brings an elite balance of persistent beading protection with a soft plush fit that gives a comfortable feel. Running Jackets in the past has had to choose between these attributes; by combining them Gore has brought new innovation to the industry and can give you a multi-functional jacket that is useful in any situation.

The two-layer construction of the jacket begins with the Gore Shakedry outer layer. This layer is durably waterproof and completely windproof, and can also protect from snowy conditions, keeping you warm and dry at all times, whether you are training, competing, or just going to the shops. This layer is finished with Gore’s Windstopper membrane, adding to the windproofing and water resistance. The inner layer of the jacket is a soft backer that brings comfort and breathability, with a close-fitting, premium fit. This ensures that not only are you protected by the elements, but you are warm, comfortable, and happy while outdoors. Despite these two premium layers in the same jacket, the garment is still incredibly lightweight, ensuring you are not restricted in any way and are free to tackle the day however you see fit.

Away from the innovative technology, Gore can always be relied on to provide a quality design. The jacket is equipped with a waistband and drawcord, ensuring the fit can be tailored to your preferences. A stretch insert at the sleeve cuff also adds to this. Spacious pockets are features, with front side entry pockets with a zipper garage keeping all valuables secure, with a security pocket inside for true ease-of-mind. The sides of the jacket are seam-free, which ensures increased flexibility and range of motion. The shoulders are also seam-free, which ensures optimum comfort when using a backpack. The logo and print of the Jacket are reflective, ensuring full visibility and safety in low-light conditions. All these features combine for a revolutionary jacket that is comfortable, protective, and ideal for the many adventures you will find yourself in.

Technical Highlights

Features

  • The new innovation in soft-lined shells: windproof, breathable, lightweight warmth
  • New soft, quiet, persistent beading (film out) surface and moisture-wicking textured backer
  • Waistband with drawcord
  • Stretch insert at sleeve cuff
  • Security pocket inside right pocket
  • Front side-entry pockets with zipper garage
  • Seam-free sides to increase range of motion
  • Seam-free shoulder for increased comfort when used with backpack
  • Reflective logo and print
  • Integrated hood with elastic facing
  • Full-length front zip with full-length under flap
Bottom Line

I really like this jacket’s design. The material is a bit thicker than Gore’s R7 Shakedry Jacket, which when it’s cold and breezy creates a warmer barrier. A lot of jackets IMO are too thin, which makes you feel cold breezes.

Gore Wear Gore-Tex Shakedry Review

We always get pretty excited at GearMashers when new products come in. In the winter I am usually doing a lot of cross training, which has me doing things like trail running and other activities off the bike. So when we get running specific products it’s always very welcome.

The Gore Wear Gore-Tex Shakedry jacket is super light and very packable. The jacket comes equipt with a 2-way zipper, a single zippered chest pocket, pin stripped reflective piping and an adjustable waist and hood.

Gore-Tex Shakedry

OK so we all know what Gore-Tex is, but what the heck is this SHAKEDRY you speak of?

Well as it turns out Shakedry allows a garment to be extremely thin while still maintaining Gore-Tex’s waterproof and windproof properties. Shakedry eliminates the face fabric, preventing absorption of water on the outside fabric, which helps to keep an athlete warmer in colder environments. It also prevents the chilling effect that can result from a damp outer layer.

The Shakedry technology gives the jacket somewhat of a Super Hero appearance. It comes off rather shiny and just reminds me of Marvel Hero outfits. For some, they may not like the overall look. For me though, I think it works.

GORE WEAR R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET Overview

The R7 Gore-tex Shakedry jacket includes the following features.

  • Zippered Chest Pocket
  • Waistband with 2 adjustable bungie cord and locking mechanisms
  • Hood with adjustable bungie cord and locking mechanism
  • 2 way full zip front
  • Tape sealed seams throughout
  • Reflective piping

GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET Chest Pocket
GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET Chest Pocket

The chest pocket is handy for carrying small items, but for running, I prefer to keep them lower on my body so there is less shaking. The pocket is big enough for an iPhone or in this case a Wahoo HR monitor.

I have taken the jacket out on several runs with a key in the pocket with zero issue. It was rather strange that I didn’t notice it at all. My original assumption was that it would bounce around a lot, but apparently not.

The chest pocket also serves as a place to stows away the jacket for storage. A perfect scenario for anyone who travels and is looking to travel light and take up less space in their baggage.

GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET 2 waist adjustment (bungee cord)

The jacket comes with 2 adjustable waist cinch straps and can be tightened or loosened based on preference. When wearing the jacket I opted to keep things a bit loose to help manage heat and keep me a bit cooler.

GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET hood
GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET hood

If it’s windy, rainy or cold and you don’t have a cap to keep your noggin warm, the hood is definitely helpful. Inside the hood GORE includes a black liner which helps keep the hood in place when running.

GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET Hood adjustment (bungee cord)

The hood also comes with a hood adjustment cinch bungie cord to tighten things up if needed.

GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET 2 way full zippered front
GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET 2 way full zippered front

GORE uses YKK zippers on the jacket, which are pretty standard in the industry. The nice part however is once the jacket is zippered up, you can unzip from the bottom if you need to cool yourself down and let more air in.

GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET taped seams
GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET taped seams

All seams on the jacket are completely taped sealed to prevent any wind or rain from entering the jacket.

I have quite a few Gore-Tex jackets that are taped sealed and so far the tape hasn’t failed on them and my guess is it will be the same for the Shakedry jacket.

GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET flexible sleeve
GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET flexible sleeve

Both sleeves come with a soft stretchy material on one side making it easy to slide the jacket’s sleeves over your hands.

The stretchy sleeves make it easy to pull up to view a running watch or GPS smartwatch.

I did find the XL arm length to be a tad bit long for me, but it is minor length issue and not something that really is a big deal. Had I chosen to get a Large, the arm length might have been right on.

Layering Up With The Gore Wear R7 Shakedry

For those who like to wear layers, especially in the winter months, the R7 Shakedry is perfection. My typical layering is to use a base layer of wool (Rapha Base Layer ) followed by a mid-layer (Gore Wear Top) and then the Shadedry or another vest or jacket.

Gore Wear Mid-layers I have used include the

  • GORE® R3 Thermo Long Sleeve Zip Shirt
  • GORE® M Thermo Shirt Light
  • GORE® M Thermo Shir

Bottom Line

Overall I found the Gore R7 Gore-Tex Shakedry hooded Jacket to be a pretty legit piece of training equipment. Every runner needs to have at least one jacket geared towards the elements and R7 delivers to stop both wind and rain.

For those that love colors, color selection is limited to pacific blue and black/lava grey. I did find the pacific blue to be a nice overall color combo.

I found the jacket breathable and since I was using an XL, I had lots of room for layers. In general, I find the Gore Wear line of apparel to run a wee bit small, so I asked for the XL because I normally would wear a size large.

For those looking for a wickedly light hooded jacket, the R7 is certainly a contender. It ticks all the right boxes and should be something to consider.

For the price conscious, the $299 retail price might send you into sticker shock, but Gore-Tex anything usually starts in the low $200’s. Personally, I find the price point reasonable considering jackets can last multiple years. Compare that to your typical running shoes that go for $100 – $120 a pop and wear out after 300 miles. In a typical year, you might expect to go through several running shoes, while your jacket looks almost new.

Lastly, the jacket like most Gore-Tex materials can be a bit noisy when running or moving around. It’s not really that other people can hear you, but it is a little distracting at first, especially if you like listening to the morning birds chirping away.
