A few months back VOORMI sent out their men’s long sleeve base-layer crew to try out. The long sleeve shirt uses VOORMI’s Dual Surface™ technology. It’s in Voormi’s bases-layer line, but I would actually qualify it as a mid-layer based on it’s weight and functionality.

First Impressions

I found the material a little less soft compared to some of my other base layer wool fabrics I like using from Rapha and Smartwool. With that said, I believe the Base-layer crew to be an excellent Mid-layer, which is how I intend to use it.

Color Options

The crew comes in 4 different color options and retails for $119. The color option I received is call Hatch and it reminds me of a high tech camo.

When To Wear

The shirt is excellent for hiking and running and keeping you warm on cold days. I do recommend using it in combination with a thinner base layer for maximum heat management in cool or cold weather.

I did have a rather tough time trying to test the base-layer out because it has been so warm here in Austin. But luckily a few cold mornings allowed me to go for runs and hikes to see how it performed and I was really pleased.

Sizing

I received is a Large and it fits great. I have seen other reviews where people say it’s a bit big, but for those who have wider shoulders it’s a great fit.

DUAL SURFACE™

DUAL SURFACE™ precision blended technology is ideal for next-to skin-applications. This fine-micron wool construction features a thin inner layer of high-performance wicking yarns designed to pull moisture off the body and disperse it on to the outer facing surface of the fabric. Once there, the natural temperature and moisture regulating properties of wool are free to take over, keeping you dry and comfortable throughout the day.

WHAT IS PRECISION BLENDING?

Precision Blending brings a completely unique performance to wool by combining the best of next-to-skin, moisture-wicking fibers and outer-facing, abrasion-resistant fibers. It is a proprietary textile construction technology that allows for the strategic introduction of high-performance synthetic fibers exactly where we want them (and not where we don’t). Compared to decades-old blending techniques where simple filler is added to wool at the yarn level, this intelligent way of introducing performance-enhancing fibers during the knitting/weaving process allows us to three-dimensionally control where each yarn ends up in the finished construction.

DUAL SURFACE UL™

Dual Surface UL™ precision blended technology uses natural fibers – wool and cotton – to produce the lightest garments in the entire VOORMI® line. Weighing in at just under 100g per square meter (30 to 50 grams lighter than the leading ultra-light merino fabrics currently on the market), Dual Surface UL™ delivers an unprecedented level of warm-weather comfort and all-season performance in a sun-shielding, lightweight construction. This collection is built with a thin inner layer of high-performance wicking yarns designed to pull moisture off the body and disperse it to the outer-facing surface of the fabric where the combination of natural elements (temperature and wind) and moisture-regulating properties of wool take over, keeping you dry and comfortable from sunrise to sunset.

Bottom Line

If you are into the outdoors and are looking for a high-performance clothing company VOORMI is definitely a company to check out. If you are located in Pagosa Springs, CO or Boseman, MT, you can check their storefront.

The Rapha Gilet (http://www.rapha.ccalso known as a Cycling Vest  is designed specifically for cycling, but we have found it to be an excellent running or walking vest.  The Rapha Gilet is by far my favorite layer for spring, fall and winter conditions.  It’s lightweight and packable, so you can bring it just about anywhere.

Rapha Gilet 2017 Review

Rapha designed their gilet for changeable conditions during milder weather. It is windproof, water resistant and perfect for cool mornings, seasonal showers and brisk descents.  Made from an extremely breathable matt fabric, the central back panel uses elasticated mesh for added breathability. At just 115g (medium size) the gilet packs down to fit comfortably into a jersey pocket.

Rapha-Mens-and-Womens-Gilet Cycling Vest 2017 Review

Cut long in the back, the gilet has a shaped or ‘canted’ hem for all-weather protection and the collar has a lower profile at the back for improved riding comfort. The arm holes are faced with extra softshell fabric for reinforcement and cut to allow greater freedom of movement. The gilet has a full-length, off-set zip, making it easy to layer jerseys underneath.

Rapha designed the gilet in two distinct cuts.  A mens version and a women’s version.  The women’s version is extremely flattering curving in around the waist line and flairing out towards the shoulders and hips.  The mens version is more masculine with less curvy lines.

Reflective piping around the arm holes and on the back of the vest helps visibility and there are also reflective Rapha logos on the collar and lower back. The gilet has five rear pockets, positioned to minimize sweating and center weight when loaded. In addition to two large cargo pockets, a rear pump pocket has a rubberized grip for securely attaching a rear light. A zipped pocket with an O-ring puller is perfect for carrying keys and is bonded for a clean finish. The left panel also has a concealed valuables pocket.

Rapha-Softshell-Gillet-Friction Locks

Friction locks on the waist cord allow for easy adjustment on the move and the gilet has two elasticated cargo pockets and an additional front zipped pocket.

The right rear pocket has a buttonhole for an iPod® cable, with stylish pink cable loops running to the shoulder. The hem has a pink drawstring with friction locks for easy adjustment and eyelets for durability. The jacket is finished with a pink hanging loop.

When the temps hit 50 or below it’s time to break out that cold-weather gear for cycling. One of my favorite choices is the Cycling Gilet or what is known in the US as a cycling vest.

Best Cycling Gilets For Cold Weather Riding
Best Cycling Gilets For Cold Weather Riding

The gilet is a simple piece of cycling kit that many experienced cyclists can’t do without and provides a needed barrier to keep the cold off the chest.

Different Types Of Gilets

Gilets come in a variety of thicknesses, but essentially boil down to two types, lightweight packable gilets, and more insulated gilets designed to take the bite out of cold rides. For late fall, winter and early spring I find insulated gilets to be optimal.

Layering Up With A Gilet

I sweat a lot and it really doesn’t matter if it is 30 degrees or 80 degrees, I am going to sweat. Sweating during a cold ride can be problematic if what you’re wearing adds to the heat buildup. That’s where gilets come in, they offer a bit of a compromise between overdressing and not wearing enough.

Most cyclists can be very comfortable riding with 3 layers up top including a base layer (short or long sleeve), a cycling jersey and then a gilet. When it does heat up during the day, a gilet can often be stuffed in a rear pocket and then put back on during long descents or when the temperatures drop again.

Gore Wear Gore-Tex Shakedry Review

We always get pretty excited at GearMashers when new products come in. In the winter I am usually doing a lot of cross training, which has me doing things like trail running and other activities off the bike. So when we get running specific products it’s always very welcome.

The Gore Wear Gore-Tex Shakedry jacket is super light and very packable. The jacket comes equipt with a 2-way zipper, a single zippered chest pocket, pin stripped reflective piping and an adjustable waist and hood.

Gore-Tex Shakedry

OK so we all know what Gore-Tex is, but what the heck is this SHAKEDRY you speak of?

Well as it turns out Shakedry allows a garment to be extremely thin while still maintaining Gore-Tex’s waterproof and windproof properties. Shakedry eliminates the face fabric, preventing absorption of water on the outside fabric, which helps to keep an athlete warmer in colder environments. It also prevents the chilling effect that can result from a damp outer layer.

The Shakedry technology gives the jacket somewhat of a Super Hero appearance. It comes off rather shiny and just reminds me of Marvel Hero outfits. For some, they may not like the overall look. For me though, I think it works.

GORE WEAR R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET Overview

The R7 Gore-tex Shakedry jacket includes the following features.

  • Zippered Chest Pocket
  • Waistband with 2 adjustable bungie cord and locking mechanisms
  • Hood with adjustable bungie cord and locking mechanism
  • 2 way full zip front
  • Tape sealed seams throughout
  • Reflective piping

GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET Grey
GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET Chest Pocket
GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET Chest Pocket

The chest pocket is handy for carrying small items, but for running, I prefer to keep them lower on my body so there is less shaking. The pocket is big enough for an iPhone or in this case a Wahoo HR monitor.

I have taken the jacket out on several runs with a key in the pocket with zero issue. It was rather strange that I didn’t notice it at all. My original assumption was that it would bounce around a lot, but apparently not.

The chest pocket also serves as a place to stows away the jacket for storage. A perfect scenario for anyone who travels and is looking to travel light and take up less space in their baggage.

GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET 2 waist adjustment (bungee cord)

The jacket comes with 2 adjustable waist cinch straps and can be tightened or loosened based on preference. When wearing the jacket I opted to keep things a bit loose to help manage heat and keep me a bit cooler.

GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET hood
GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET hood

If it’s windy, rainy or cold and you don’t have a cap to keep your noggin warm, the hood is definitely helpful. Inside the hood GORE includes a black liner which helps keep the hood in place when running.

GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET Hood adjustment (bungee cord)

The hood also comes with a hood adjustment cinch bungie cord to tighten things up if needed.

GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET 2 way full zippered front
GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET 2 way full zippered front

GORE uses YKK zippers on the jacket, which are pretty standard in the industry. The nice part however is once the jacket is zippered up, you can unzip from the bottom if you need to cool yourself down and let more air in.

GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET taped seams
GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET taped seams

All seams on the jacket are completely taped sealed to prevent any wind or rain from entering the jacket.

I have quite a few Gore-Tex jackets that are taped sealed and so far the tape hasn’t failed on them and my guess is it will be the same for the Shakedry jacket.

GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET flexible sleeve
GORE R7 GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY HOODED JACKET flexible sleeve

Both sleeves come with a soft stretchy material on one side making it easy to slide the jacket’s sleeves over your hands.

The stretchy sleeves make it easy to pull up to view a running watch or GPS smartwatch.

I did find the XL arm length to be a tad bit long for me, but it is minor length issue and not something that really is a big deal. Had I chosen to get a Large, the arm length might have been right on.

Layering Up With The Gore Wear R7 Shakedry

For those who like to wear layers, especially in the winter months, the R7 Shakedry is perfection. My typical layering is to use a base layer of wool (Rapha Base Layer ) followed by a mid-layer (Gore Wear Top) and then the Shadedry or another vest or jacket.

Gore Wear Mid-layers I have used include the

  • GORE® R3 Thermo Long Sleeve Zip Shirt
  • GORE® M Thermo Shirt Light
  • GORE® M Thermo Shir

Bottom Line

Overall I found the Gore R7 Gore-Tex Shakedry hooded Jacket to be a pretty legit piece of training equipment. Every runner needs to have at least one jacket geared towards the elements and R7 delivers to stop both wind and rain.

For those that love colors, color selection is limited to pacific blue and black/lava grey. I did find the pacific blue to be a nice overall color combo.

I found the jacket breathable and since I was using an XL, I had lots of room for layers. In general, I find the Gore Wear line of apparel to run a wee bit small, so I asked for the XL because I normally would wear a size large.

For those looking for a wickedly light hooded jacket, the R7 is certainly a contender. It ticks all the right boxes and should be something to consider.

For the price conscious, the $299 retail price might send you into sticker shock, but Gore-Tex anything usually starts in the low $200’s. Personally, I find the price point reasonable considering jackets can last multiple years. Compare that to your typical running shoes that go for $100 – $120 a pop and wear out after 300 miles. In a typical year, you might expect to go through several running shoes, while your jacket looks almost new.

Lastly, the jacket like most Gore-Tex materials can be a bit noisy when running or moving around. It’s not really that other people can hear you, but it is a little distracting at first, especially if you like listening to the morning birds chirping away.

If I could choose just one hat in 2019 to wear cycling, running or walking, it would be the Rapha Merino Hat (https://www.rapha.cc).  The merino wool is soft and breathable.  I have what I consider to be a rather large noggin and this hat fits me to a tee, yet it also fit’s Kathleen’s smaller noggin.

The Rapha Merino hat is made from New Zealand Merino (95%) and nylon (5%).  The nylon is really needed to give it a little bit of a stretch factor.  The Merino of course adds warmth, breath-ability and odor fighting properties of wool that make it odor-resistant.  I have yet to smell the hat after a workout and go yuck.  Even days later without washing it, the hat remains odor free, at least to my senses.

Rapha-Merino-Hat-Review

FABRIC

  • New Zealand Merino:
  • 95% merino
  • 5% nylon

The hat is designed with a double thick headband and a single layer above the head band. This multi layer combo serves to help keep your ears especially warm, yet lets your head vent heat.  The other advantage of the layering combo is it fits nicely under a helmet, without it feeling too bulky.

The Rapha Merino Hat was designed specifically for cycling, but like many products Rapha makes, they can have multi-use applications.  I have found that as a runner/walker, the Rapha hat is probably the best running specific hat I have come across.

With most wool products I like to hang dry them after washing, but I have been known to throw them in the dryer by mistake or because of time.  So far I haven’t had any issue with the hat shrinking, but your observations might differ.

The Rapha Merino Hat is made from a luxury merino wool to keep your head warm and comfortable even in the harshest winter conditions. The hat has a small amount of nylon woven into the fabric to make it more durable and to ensure a snug fit. The natural fibre of merino wicks sweat away from the head and the fabric is quick drying, even after a downpour. The hat is designed to be worn with or without a helmet and is fully reversible. It is black on one side and available in a choice of colours on the reverse. The two-inch earband can be folded up to help regulate body temperature as well as to provide some stylish versatility. The hat is finished with a black Rapha logo tab.

RAPHA’S MERINO HAT KEY FEATURES:

  • Merino and Nylon blend for durability
  • Quick drying
  • Reversible
  • Foldable earband
  • Snug fit, perfect under a helmet
  • Lightweight, insulating, breathable
  • Easy to wash” – Rapha.cc
  • Retails – $55

BOTTOM LINE the Rapha Merino Hat is an amazing accessory that I love to use.  The retail price tag of $55 might scare some away, but I can honestly say that if you purchase it, you will not be disappointed with how it regulates heat and make you a happy camper.  Throughout the year Rapha puts on sales, so often you can pick up Rapha apparel at a discount.

The Rapha Base Layer short sleeve crewneck is probably the best performance cycling base layer I have to used.  Heck even though they designed the base for cycling, I find I am always using them when venturing out on cold chilly runs.

Rapha Merino Wool Base Layer Crew Neck

Base Layers

Base layers are the first piece of clothing you should invest in.  Base Layers are designed to wick moisture away from body and help regulate body temperature.

REVIEW

Rapha Base Layer – Merino Wool

Rapha uses merino wool, which has become hugely popular in the cycling industry.  This isn’t the wool your father wore.  Ralpha’s base layer is soft and feels fantastic on.  There are of course all sorts of new types of materials that are also designed to transfer moisture away from the body, but Rapha seems to have nailed it with their base layer design.   Base layers are designed to remain on you the entire ride.  These are your first line of defense against changing temperatures.  Typically most rides only require one base layer.  I prefer, to use a short sleeve base layer, but sometimes a ride might require two and perhaps long sleeve versions.

What makes the Rapha base layer unique, is you can actually wear the layer around town when not cycling.  I absolutely love the look of the shirt and it works well by itself or as an under shirt.  I might add that if you have a good physique, the Rapha base layer will certainly add to your overall look.  The shirt just looks great on.

Another benefit to the Rapha base layer is the wool material actually helps to diminish body odor.  Most of today’s synthetic fibers used in fitness apparel, actually increase body odor.  Over time many synthetic materials actually create a breeding ground for bacteria.  Sweat generally has no odor.  It’s the bacteria, which creates unpleasant smell.  Wool is naturally anti-bacterial and thus helps to eliminate bacterial growth.

Technical Highlights

Rapha Base Layer Technical Highlights

The Rapha base layers come in no sleeve, short sleeve and long sleeve.  For me the short sleeve is the best option.  This allows me to have both a cycling shirt as well as a nice undershirt. To save money, you can buy a 3 pack for $160 vs the normal $80 for 1.  Yeah I know the base layer might seem way too expensive, but you’re going to love it once you put it on.  For me it was worth the money every time I wear it.

The base layer comes in 3 colors black, grey and white.  I opted for black and haven’t looked back.  That said it would be cool to have some other color options, say a blue or a red.

  • Beautifully soft and itch-free
  • Naturally anti-bacterial and odour resistant
  • Close fit with flat-locked stitching for comfort, seams positioned behind shoulders to avoid rub from bags or bib-shorts
  • Short sleeves and sleeveless versions
  • Washes beautifully
  • Fabric weight is 150g/m2
  • Super fine New Zealand merino wool
  • Retail $80.00

Bottom Line

Bottom Line

The Rapha base layer is really the bomb.  I have used 2 for the last 5 or years and they are still going strong.  Best money I have spent on a base layer yet.

Retail for the Rapah base layer is $80 or 3 for $160 (Sometimes it’s on sale).  Rapha products can be purchased direct from the Rapha website http://www.rapha.cc

A representative for Gore Wear (https://www.gorewear.com) contacted me and asked if I would like to test out some of their products.  A week later or there about I had a fantastic lineup of apparel including

  • C5 GWS LONG SLEEVE JERSEY
  • GORE® R3 Long Sleeve Zip Shirt
  • GORE® R7 GORE® WINDSTOPPER® Tights
  • Also a 2019 Vest that I have to keep under wraps for a bit

REVIEW

GORE® R3 LONG SLEEVE ZIP SHIRT

Don’t let the weather get in the way of your workout. For dry but brisk mornings and chilly evenings, this long sleeve with convenient front zip is a great addition to the dedicated athlete’s wardrobe to keep you warm and ready to go.
MSRP: $79.99
Features:

  • Flat-lock seams
  • Short zip with semi-lock slider and underflap
  • Close fit collar
  • Reflective logo
  • Minimized seams for less chafing
GORE® R3 Long Sleeve Zip Shirt

Gore Wear sent a size large in a cool blue Dynamic Cyan.  This is definitely a great running shirt when the temps start dropping.  I ended up laying this with the (Vest that shall not be talked about) and a Rapha wool base layer.  It was just about perfect.  The only thing I would change would be to add cutout slits near the wrist for your thumbs to pass through.  I find on colder days it can be rather useful.

Sizing was right on the mark and felt great.  The blue color made my whole outfit pop.  The shirt didn’t have all the bells and whistles of some of the other Gore Wear apparel, but it really didn’t need anything more.

C5 GWS LONG SLEEVE JERSEY

Bridging the gap between a thick winter jacket and your regular long sleeve jersey, this GORE® WINDSTOPPER® jersey gives you added protection from the wind and cold, without the bulk of your warmest coat. Keep this layer on hand for early season rides.
MSRP: $ 179.99
Features: This is a GORE® WINDSTOPPER® Product, which means it’s totally windproof, extremely breathable and water repellent.

  • Fabric with stretch technology and next-to-skin comfort
  • 3-compartment back pockets, slightly tapered on side for easy access
  • Minimized seams
  • Front zip
  • Reinforced hem for easier closure of zipper
  • Close fit collar
  • Elastic hem
  • Gripper elastic on bottom hem
  • Reflective tape
  • Reflective logo
C5 GWS LONG SLEEVE JERSEY

While the R3 was more of a runners top, the C5 GWS is all about cycling in the cold.  It comes with WindStopper making it totally windproof, yet still keeping it breathable and water repellent.  It’s designed for temps between 41 – 59 degrees.  For me this was a bit harder of a sell.  The arms were a little long for me and didn’t allow for much room for layering.  Beyond the arms the rest of the Jersey felt spot on size wise.  I did like the neck area for comfort.  I think the ideal conditions for this jersey would be temperatures above 40 degrees and combining it with a short sleeve base layer.

This jersey probably wouldn’t be my first choice if temperatures were below 40 and I was looking to layer up.

GORE® R7 GORE® WINDSTOPPER® TIGHTS

MSRP: $159.99
Don’t compromise your performance or health by running bare legged in the cold. These GORE® WINDSTOPPER® tights are unbelievably breathable, while also protecting your knees from the worst the wind can throw at you.
Features: This is a GORE® WINDSTOPPER® Product, which means it’s totally windproof, extremely breathable and water repellent.

  • Reflective logo
  • Zip pocket on back
  • Fabric with stretch technology and next-to-skin comfort
  • Foldable cuff turns long tights into a 7/8 tights
  • Highly functional material mix
  • Quick dry
  • 2 front pockets for nutrition
  • Adjustable elastic waistband with flat cord
GORE® R7 GORE® WINDSTOPPER® Tights

These tights look legit, unfortunately I couldn’t test them out because of a sizing issue.  I was sent a small, but I have either gained some weight or they are sized really small, I am talking European small.    I have a 30 waist and I would say size small are more geared for someone who has a size 27 waist.  So be warned go with a size up when ordering these.

Bottom Line

Definitely check out Gore Wear (https://www.gorewear.com) and let me know what you think.  Based on first impressions, I am now really excited to check out more from Gore Wear and look forward to seeing what they are going to release for 2019.

I often get asked what type what are the Top Winter Cycling Apparel Companies and which do I prefer.   There are about 5 really good companies that I tend to get winter cycling apparel from including

  • Assos
  • Castelli
  • Capo
  • Giordana
  • Louis Garneau
  • Pearl Izumi
  • Rapha
  • North Wave

While these are my favorite, there certainly are tons of other cycling companies that make excellent winter apparel and gear.

I have also included some fantastic Pro Tips to make your Winter Training more attractive.

Assos Of Switzerland

Assos: https://www.assos.com/

assos

Assos became a world name when the founder created one of the first carbon aero bike frames around 1976.  Tony Maier-Moussa the founder also is claimed to have created the first lycra cycling shorts.  Fast forward to today and Assos makes some outstanding winter cycling apparel.  Oh and if you are wondering what the name means.  It comes from the greek language meaning the first, the best.

ASSOS tiburuGiletEquipe_re Orange-1-M

Castelli Winter Cycling Apparel

Castelli: https://www.castelli-cycling.com

Castelli Cycling Apparel logo

Castelli traces its roots back to a fine tailor (Vittore Gianni) in the heart of Milan, founded in 1876. Through the years, Vittore Gianni clothed AC Milan, Juventus, and the Milan Ballet.  The business changed course in 1935 when a young Armando Castelli joined Gianni’s staff and in 1939 purchased the company.

The Castelli scorpion was created around 1974 and versions of it have been used ever since.

Castelli NARCISISTA 2 SHOECOVER

My favorite items from Castelli are in their winter line including shoe covers, jackets and vests.  I am also a really big fan of their cycling socks, especially the wool ones.  One thing that makes Castelli stand out is their color combinations and logo, very European.

Capo Winter Cycling Apparel

Capo: https://capocycling.com

Capo Cycling logoCapo was founded in 2004 by Gary Vasconi and Robert Carbone. The initial offering of technical socks and casual apparel was widely accepted within the marketplace. Soon thereafter, the product range expanded to include a collection of men’s kits along with the launch of their custom apparel program. Over the years, the level and breadth of product have matured with new category, design, and technology introductions each season.

Capo products are designed and developed in the United States, with the majority of manufacturing taking place in northern Italy.

Capo Padrone SL Wind Jacket

This year their winter line Padrone SL Roubaix Bib Tights and Padrone SL Wind Jacket are excellent at combating cold days.

Giordana Winter Cycling Apparel

Giordana: http://www.giordanacycling.com/

giordana Cycling logoThe beginnings of Giordana Cycling Apparel started in 1971 when Giorgio Andretta created Gita Sporting Goods, LTD to provide North American cyclists with the highest quality Italian bicycle equipment. Starting as an elite cyclist from the Veneto region of Italy, Giorgio developed relationships with many of the local companies while racing and after moving from Italy in his early 20’s became the first North American distributor for Grandis, Duegi, De Rosa, Diadora, Campagnolo, Pinarello, and many others.

Giordana_Cycling_Sport_Men_Merino_Wool_Jersey_Blue_front

If you’re looking for great bib shorts and jerseys, Giordana is a fantastic place to start.  Their wool line is pretty spectacular and has a lot of old school flair.  Usually in the winter I will either run a single or dual wool layer with a jacket on top.

Louis Garneau Winter Cycling Apparel

logo-louis-garneau

In 1983, In his parent’s garage in Saint-Augustin-des-Desmaures, Quebec, Louis Garneau launched his namesake factory with one goal: to make great fitting, well-designed, top quality cycling apparel… that wouldn’t break the bank for his cycling friends. In the ensuing years, Louis’ innovative spirit and sense of design pushed the company through some key phases of expansion as it left the little garage and became a worldwide leader in cycling.

Louis Garneau: http://www.giordanacycling.com/

Louis Garneau super-prestige-2-cycling-gloves

If there is one thing Louis Garneau makes probably better than anyone else it’s their accessory line to protect the extremities from the cold.  They have a huge selection of gloves, booties and head warmers.

Louis Garneau’s Lobster “SUPER PRESTIGE 2” cycling gloves  are probably some of the best overall cycling gloves I have used to date.  The gloves can be worn as normal or in lobster mode covering 4 fingers.  It adds an additional layer of warm and wind blocking capabilities.

Pearl Izumi

Pearl Izumi: https://www.pearlizumi.com

pearl izumi logo

“To know where you are going, you first have to know where you came from.”  Pearl Izumi has origins in Tokyo, Japan over 50 years ago. Their products began to be seen in the US around 1981 and is now formally known as Pearl Izumi USA, Inc. They have sponsored many bicycling teams, including the 1984 USA Olympic team. Pearl Izumi USA was founded by Davis Phinney, Andy Hampsten, Stan Mavis, & Hugh Walton.

The name Pearl Izumi is derived from the gem “pearl” and an area of Japan known for its clear water “Izumi.” Literally translated, the name means, “fountain of pearls.”

Pearl Izumi prior to 2017 Pearl Izumi had both a cycling and running line.  They have since ceased production of running related products to focus exclusively on cycling.  They have a reputation for making outstanding cold weather riding gear.

P.R.O. Barrier WxB Glove

Rapha Cycling Winter Apparel

Rapha: https://www.rapha.cc

Rapha_logoFounded by Simon Mottram in London in 2004, Rapha launched with a month-long exhibition in East London’s Old Truman Brewery. Entitled Kings of Pain, it showcased six heroes from cycling’s golden era and beyond: Fausto Coppi, Jacques Anquetil, Raymond Poulidor, Tom Simpson, Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault. These riders perfectly captured the glory and suffering – and style – of road racing and today they, along with many others, continue to provide a source of inspiration for Rapha’s design.

Rapha Merino Base Layer

Three of my favorite pieces from Rapha are their Merino Base Layer, Merino Hat and Gilet.  I have had the base layers now for probably 5 seasons and they are definitely my goto layer when the temps drop.

Top Winter Cycling Apparel BONUS

Northwave logoObviously keeping your feet warm is a major task during the winter and NorthWave seems to be at the top.

In 1993 Gianni Piva launches the bi-color Integral shoes, the first MTB shoes by Northwave.  Since then Northwave probably more than any other shoe company has made excellent winter cycling shoes.

Northwave: https://northwave.com

Northwave Extreme EXTREME RR GTX Winter Cycling Shoes

From our perspective Northwave currently has the best winter road cycling shoe out there called the Northwave EXTREME RR GTX.  For those who prefer a winter MTB shoe, Northwave also makes the EXTREME XCM GTX, which is almost identical to the road with more traction.

PRO TIPs For Cycling Winter Training

How to Keep Your Feet Warmer

Putting Aluminum/Tin foil over your feet prior to putting your shoes on can keep your feet much warmer. Another option is to cut up one of those light silver safety blankets and use those.

How to Keep Your Head Warmer

Louis Garneau and probably a few other companies sell helmet covers.  The helmet covers block the wind going through the helmet vents keeping your head much warmer.  Wearing a beanie such as the Rapha Merino Hat will also help keep your head warm.

How to Keep Your Face and Neck Warmer

Neck gators help block the wind and can be pulled up to your nose.  I first started seeing cyclists wearing neck gators this year, but they have been around for quite some time.

How to Layer Up

For winter riding 3 layers seems to be the ideal number for the upper body.  The first or base layer should be tight against the skin.  Wool is generally the best material and will keep you warm even when wet.  The second layer should be a little more loose.  Again, wool is usually a great option for the second layer.  The final layer should be an outer shell that has wind blocking capabilities.

For the legs, winter bib shorts that are either full length or 3 quarter length knickers are ideal.  In general doubling up on the legs is not recommended unless it’s super cold, below 20 degrees.

Start Using A Trainer

If it hasn’t occurred to you, mix up your outdoor training with indoor training.  It’s much easier to get motivated for an indoor session when the weather is really cold.  I put together a great article on some of the Top Electronic Indoor Cycling Trainers.

This past month we were sent the 2017 Suomy Timeless Cycling Helmet for review.  Suomy cycling helmets are new to the US and the Suomy Timeless Cycling Helmet is part of their Fast Road line of helmets.  We were excited to get our first look at the Suomy helmet line and give them a go.

Suomy Timeless Road Cycling Helmet Review

SUOMY HISTORY

Suomy is an Italian and family run business.  Having long worked in Yamaha, Umberto Monti, founder of Suomy, decided to become entrepreneur and start a helmet company.  The Suomy company founding involved Umberto and two other brothers, Walter, a former motocross rider and Maurizio, a nuclear engineer.  Together the 3 formed the Suomy brand.

UNBOXING THE SUOMY TIMELESS CYCLING HELMET

The Suomy Timeless cycling helmet arrives at our doorsteps.

SUOMY TIMELESS CYCLING HELMET Box

SUOMY TIMELESS CYCLING HELMET Road

Inside the box contain a silver Suomy Timeless Road Cycling helmet, what Suomy refers to as their Fast Helmets line of road cycling helmets.  Suomy top of road helmets are found in their Road Racing line called the Gun Wind.

Suomy Timeless Road Cycling Helmet Review Front

The helmet contains lots of venting for air flow, in fact there are a total of 35 ventilation holes to allow both air in and out.

Suomy Timeless Road Cycling Helmet Review 2

It’s hard to see, but one noticeable difference that was immediately apparent is the helmet webbing thickness.  The Timeless strap’s webbing is much thinner than many helmets we have used.  The thinner straps obviously reduce weight and add a bit more to comfort.

Suomy Timeless Strap

The Timeless helmets can be adjusted in 4 areas.  3 adjustments can be made on the straps themselves (2 on the right side and 1 on the left).

Suomy Timeless Road Cycling Helmet Review Rearview

Beyond typical helmet strap adjustments, the helmets main adjustment mechanism is in the rear.  Once the straps are adjusted for fit, the rear adjustment knob is all you will be messing with.

We did find that the helmet runs a bit on the small side.  We received a Large, which did fit my big noggin, but if my head was a bit bigger, I would have definitely needed an Extra Large.  I would advise going to a bigger size if you have doubts.

SUOMY TIMELESS CYCLING HELMET SPECIFICATIONS

  • Made in in-molding technology.
  • Outer shell made out of ABS and inner shell in EPS.
  • SMC system (Suomy Minimum Contact System), which creates a gap between the head and the helmet, which guarantees maximum comfort.
  • 35 ventilation holes in variable directions to optimize airflow.
  • Adjustable rear fit system with 2 vertical 2 horizontal settings.
  • Removable and washable padding, available in different thickness.
  • Lower protective ring along the bottom edge of the helmet.
  • Retail: $94.99

Suomy Timeless Road Cycling Helmet Review Front

Here is a front view of what the helmet looks like when worn.  Notice all the front vents.
Jersey is by Rapha (https://www.rapha.cc).  See our Rapha Reviews.

Suomy Timeless Road Cycling Helmet Review Rear View

The helmet sits high on the head and feels very secure.

Suomy Timeless Road Cycling Helmet Review Side Profile

Here we have a side view of the helmet.  Notice there is a lot of room above the ear for glasses and air flow.  Some helmets can be really annoying because they sit too low, however this isn’t the case with the Suomy.

BOTTOM LINE

After taking out the Suomy Timeless Cycling Hemet on various rides I can confirm that the helmet is really good.  I was a bit surprised, but it seems Suomy did their homework in designing a great cycling helmet under $100.

What I really like about the helmet is the airflow and how it sits higher on your head above the ears.  Some helmets sit so low that they mess with your cycling glasses and this certainly isn’t the case with the Timeless.  The airflow through the helmet is excellent and I have zero issues.

I really can’t say anything negative about the helmet or how it works.  For under a $100 it is an excellent value, so if you’re in the market for a great helmet at a great price, you can not go wrong with the Suomy Timeless.
