It’s been a little over year now since I have been using the Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt and so far it’s performed flawlessly.  So rather than write this review as I typically would, I decided to write it and show you how I am currently using the Bolt and what I find extremely helpful.

Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt Review 2018

For many having a cycling computer is as much a part of their bikes as wheels are.  While you certainly can go biking without one, a good cycling computer not only let’s you know your current riding stats (Speed, Distance, Time…), but also allows you to upload those to various cycling programs like Strava for post ride analysis.

Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt Aero Computer Mount

Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt Review 2018 bar Aero Bar End Attachement

Wahoo claims that the ELEMNT Bolt was the first fully aerodynamic GPS bike computer, but don’t let it being a bit more aero con you into thinking it’s going to really help you ride faster.  While it certainly might shave a few seconds or 10ths of a second from your ride, it’s not going to win you a race.

In my case I nixed the provided computer mount for the K-Edge Combo computer mount allowing me to add a NiteRider 950 Lumen light.  Something the Bolt mount couldn’t do.  For those who commute or ride in mixed lighting conditions, this setup is by far the best setup I have found to date.

Rather than having a light on your helmet or handle bars, the light sits below your cycling computer and in the center of your bike’s front wheel.  This is the optimal position for a riding light and once you have setup like this you will not want to go back to anything else.

Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt Fully Wireless

Wahoo ELEMNT App Apple

The Bolt is fully wireless, which means there’s no need to tether up to your laptop to sync ride data, download maps, or update the software.  Everything can be uploaded via WiFi, Bluetooth, or ANT+.

In the past many cycling computers required you to hook them up to a computer to upload or download information.  With the Bolt you simply connect to the Wahoo App and the information is transmitted wirelessly to you phone and then to your Wahoo Fitness account.  It really doesn’t get any easier.

Using the Wahoo ELEMNT App gives you full access to the update what displays on the Bolt.  To use the App you need to power on the Bolt and then launch the ELEMNT app.  The app will then wirelessly connect to the Bolt.

On my Bolt I have 3 screens that are active including a Workout Data Screen, a Climbing Screen and a Map Screen.  These can be turned on or off depending on what you want shown.

Wahoo ELEMENT APP Workout Data 2018

Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt Workout Data Screen

In the Workout Data screen you have all sorts of options as to what you want shown.  My current preference is to display the following fields.

  • Speed
  • Heart Rate
  • Distance
  • Time Of Day
  • Temperature
  • Cadence
  • Average Speed
  • Calories
  • Active Time

Wahoo ELEMNT APP Screen Workout Data

Once your workout screens are setup the way you like, you can increase and decrease the font size during a ride by clicking the right up/down buttons on the Bolt.  As you increase the font less fields display.  As you decrease the font size more fields display.

Personally  I find showing 4 fields to be optimal for viewing.  When you show more fields the font size gets a bit too small to see.

Since I don’t have a power meter, my most important fields I like to view include

  • Speed
  • Heart Rate
  • Cadence
  • Distance

Ever since attending Interbike last year, I have been trying to get a pair of the Northwave Extreme RR XFrame Cycling Shoes to review.  Today they showed up at my door step unannounced.  I had sort of written off getting a pair, but then all of a sudden they arrived.  Christmas in March!

Northwave Extreme RR X-Frame Cycling Shoes 2018 A

Olaf gets a little excited every time a package arrives, especially if it is from Italy.

Northwave Company History

Northwave LogoNorthwave hails from Northern Italy not too far from Venice.   The company got it start in 1993 when Gianni Piva launched their bi-color Integral mountain bike shoes, the first shoes produced by Northwave.

Since then Northwave has been producing excellent cycling shoes, apparel and accessories.  I can remember back in the late 90’s seeing Northwave cycling shoes for triathlon.  I never had a pair, but they always seem rather cool with their Italian flair.

In 2016 Northwave launched their XFrame line and now has introduced the the Xtreme RR.

The goal of the XFrame construction was to design a shoe’s retention system that would eliminate pressure point issues occurring on the upper part of the foot.

Northwave Extreme RR XFrame Cycling Shoe Review

Northwave Extreme RR Cycling Shoes

The Extreme RR cycling shoes are housed in a great looking shoe box

I don’t know why, but Italians always seem to know how to use colors with the proper amounts of detail and graphics.

Extreme RR Cycling Shoe XFrame Shoe Bag

Extreme RR Cycling Shoe XFrame Shoe Bag. Not sure how many cycling shoe bags actually get used. I tend to throw them away or used them for other purposes.

Each Extreme RR cycling shoes come with a mesh shoe bag and 2 sets of shoe footbed inserts.  The footbeds have a  stiffened dual density design and come in a Pro Regular Fit and Pro Slim Fit (features an extra 2 mm toe insert for narrow feet).  I prefer the Pro Regular Fit, since my feet aren’t narrow.

The shoes seem true to size and I have had zero fitting issues.  I have read some reviews where people feel the shoes are a bit too narrow, but for me I didn’t have that problem.

Extreme RR Cycling Shoes

The Extreme RRs come with an extra set of shoe inserts and a shoe bag.

Northwave Extreme RRs come in 3 flavors, Neon Yellow with black highlights, Black with Neon Yellow highlights and White with Red highlights.  Our shoes arrived in the Black with a Neon Yellow highlight color pallet.

While the Neon color scheme isn’t bad and probably is more visible on the road, I would like to see a few other color combos that are more subdued.

The shoes are made with Northwave’s Xframe patented construction and an ultralight material that is 0.5 mm thick.

Northwave Extreme RR Cycling Shoes 2018

Here is a closer look at the Extreme RRs.

Northwave Extreme RR Directions

The shoes came with 2 tags that tell you how to use the dials. I found the dials a bit more complicated than BOAs.

Northwave Extreme RR Propriety Dials

Northwave Propriety Dials.

Extreme RR SLW2 Dial2 System

One thing that will become quite evident is the Extremes don’t come equipped with a BOA closure system.  Instead Northwave uses their own proprietary SLW2 dials and synthetic XFrame lacing system.  Vittoria was another cycling shoe company that had their own dials, but last year switched to the BOA system for their high end shoes.

After playing around with the SLW2 dials, I found them pretty easy to use, but not as easy as the new BOA systems, especially the new IP1 dials that are on cycling shoes like the PEARL IZUMI P.R.O. LEADER V4.

The downside to BOA’s IP1 is they have a higher profile and maybe are less aero compared to the SLW2s low profile layout.  Probably not a big deal, but something to consider.

While most high end cycling shoes I have reviewed have 2 adjustment dials, the Extreme RRs come with a single dial.  Having a single dial means that you can’t make as many micro adjustments to your fit, but after trying them on, I didn’t find I needed to make any additional adjustments.  If you prefer the performance of a dual dial shoe instead, the Northwave “Extreme” comes with 2 dials and a velcro strap.

Northwave Extreme

The XFrame lacing system seems to contour to the foot providing a ton of security and stability.  With the uppers only being .5mm thick, it almost feels like you’re not wearing a cycling shoe.  Very comfortable.

Extreme RR Cycling Shoes SPD and SpeedPlay Compatible

The shoes are SPD and SpeedPlay compatible.

Northwave Extreme RR Carbon Soles

The bottoms of the Extremes are made from an Ultralight Carbon 15 sole, which includes unidirectional carbon combined with a reinforced layer.   Northwave gives the shoes a stiffness index of 15.0, making it their best-performing and stiffest Northwave sole ever.

I am not sure how Northwave comes up with their stiffness index, but using the Extremes during out of the saddle bouts I felt extremely secure with zero flex.

The shoes are both SPD and Speedplay adapter compatible providing a very low stack height between the foot and pedals.

Northwave Extreme RR Full Carbon Bottom

As with most top end cycling shoes, the Extreme RRs have full carbon soles.

Extreme RR Heel Retention System

The shoes have some type of shark like skin material in the heel to help keep it secure.

These are the 2nd pair of cycling shoes I have tested that come with a shark like skin material in the heel.  The Integrated heel system contains directional fiber which helps prevent any heel slipping and from my experience definitely works.

Extreme RR Cycling Shoe Bag

The Extreme RRs hanging out in the Northwave cycle shoe bag

I know shoe bags are sort of cool, but I never seem to use them for my cycling shoes.  I end up using them for socks or other clothing items.

Alexander Kristoff Getting His Own Extreme RRs

I always like getting a chance to see inside shoe companies and checkout their facilities and the people that work there.  Alexander Kristoff got a chance to get some custom Extreme RR shoes with custom colors.  I really like the final product.

Northwave Extreme RR Technical Specifications

  • Ultralight Carbon 15 sole made of 100% unidirectional carbon combined with a reinforced layer. With a stiffness index of 15.0, it’s the best-performing Northwave sole ever
  • NW Speedplay adapter compatible for the lowest stack height between foot and pedal
  • Made with Xframe® patented construction and ultralight next generation materials that are only 0.5 mm thick, the upper transfers every watt of power and provides the snuggest, even fit with no pressure points
  • SLW2 dial, the only one with step-by-step and full release in a single button
  • Integrated heel system containing directional fibre prevents any slipping
  • Includes two footbeds with a stiffened dual density design: Pro Regular Fit and Pro Slim Fit which features an extra 2 mm toe insert for narrow feet
  • Ultralight at just 220 g!
  • Retail Price : $395.00

Bottom Line – Northwave Extreme RR XFrame Cycling Shoes

The Northwave Extreme RR shoes are extremely comfortable and their performance is top notch.  The combination of the XFrame and a single dial makes the shoes wickedly simple to use and wear.  For those who are looking for a bit more adjustability, you may prefer a dual dial system.  That said, I didn’t feel the need for additional adjustability that a dual dial would provide.

I did find the SLW2 dials a bit more complicated than BOA’s IP1s and I am wondering if sometime in the future Northwave might make a switch to the BOA system like Vittoria has done.

Sizing can be a problematic sometimes when ordering cycling shoes online.  If you don’t have a chance to try them on first, you’re never quite sure of the sizing.  I found the Extreme’s, at least for me to fit true to size.  If I had to choose, I would choose a 1/2 size bigger rather than a 1/2 smaller.  If your feet are really wide, the Extreme RR probably isn’t the ideal shoe for you as it runs a bit narrow.  Northwave does offer a wide version of the Extreme with a dual closure system that should work.

The retail price for the shoes is $395, but I have seen it for as low as $300.  Local availability might be an issue, at least it was for me, with no stores carrying Northwave products near by.  For those who like shopping Amazon and have Prime, you can pick them up under retail with free shipping.

Overall the XFrame design a winner and you will be impressed with it’s great fitting properties.

You can Find the Northwave Extreme on Amazon.

The Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoes are the most breathable cycling shoes I have ever worn.  Airflow is absolutely amazing and I would definitely categorize them as late spring, summer and early fall must haves.

In August of 2016 Pearl Izumi stunned the running world when they announced that Pearl Izumi would ceased production of their running line of shoes and apparel.  The decision to recommit to their core, which in Pearl Izumi’s case was cycling, was bold and decisive.  Starting in January of 2017 all efforts would be focused on “being the best at performance cycling, mountain bike and tri apparel, shoes and accessories”

When Interbike rolled around this year, Pearl Izumi was their in force showcasing some fantastic cycling apparel and shoes.  The Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 happened to be a pretty big hit, drawing lots of attention.

What makes the P.R.O. Leader v4 stand out from the crowed cycling shoe brands is their innovative double BOA system offset on the tongue and the wicked cool mirror like metallic rainbow colored bottoms.

P.R.O. Leader v4 Shipment arrives

Recently we got a slew of Pearl Izumi goodness including cycling shorts, P.R.O. arm warmers, P.R.O. gloves and the P.R.O. Leader V4 Cycling Shoes.  Needless to say we were stoked.  Pearl Izumi’s P.R.O. line is their top of the line cycling apparel and shoes.  Stuff pros would want to wear.  In our case most of it was cold weather gear rated for temps between 40 to 60 degrees.  Perfect for Austin’s cooler winters.

Pearl Izumi P.R.O Apparel and Cycling Shoes

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoe Review

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoes

Pearl Izumi PRO Leader v4 Bag, Insert and arch support risers

The shoes come with a shoe bag and 2 arch support inserts (Medium/High) for those wanting to add more arch support.  I found I didn’t need to add the arch supports, but for those with higher arches you do have options.

Pearl Izumi PRO Leader v4 Inside Rear Heal Bumper

The shoes come with a replaceable heel.  Two screws are used to hold it down and should you need to replace the heel, just remove the shoe inserts and unscrew the screws to replace it.

Pearl Izumi PRO Leader v4 Tongue

It’s a little hard to tell but the cycling shoes tongue is offset with more of the tongue wrapping towards the inside of the shoe.

Pearl Izumi PRO Leader v4 Top down view

By contrast the BOA system sits more on the outside of the shoe rather than straight over the middle.  The shoes were designed this way to help avoid pressure points on the top of the foot.

Pearl Izumi PRO Leader v4 BOA IP4 Sideview

There are mesh panels on the front and both sides of the shoes to allow air flow into them.  I found the shoes to allow a lot of airflow, which should help keep your feet a bit cooler.  Of the many shoes I have tested, I would rate these high on breathability.

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoes front venting

There is also venting on the bottom of the shoe with a mesh screen at the front.

Pearl Izumi PRO Leader v4 Rear Shot

The heel cup has padding on the inside and a recessed part to help keep the foot from slipping.  One thing that is missing that I would like to see added is the shark tooth type material many cycling shoes have.  The material is really good at keeping the ankle from sliding.

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoes Observations

Below are just a few observations I had when cycling with the shoes.

  • When taking the shoes for a spin I felt the top of my big toes hitting the top of the shoes and was a bit concerned, but after a few rides nothing seemed to go wrong.  The sensation sort of dissipates and you forget about it.
  • The BOA IP1 dials work really well and you can really crank down on the tension.
  • The upper material doesn’t flex as much as leather or other synthetics I have cycled with, but certainly isn’t uncomfortable.
  • The shoes fit true to size and I didn’t have any issue with sizing.
  • I didn’t feel any flex in the carbon soles when in a stand up sprint or while climbing hills.  They reacted really well and I felt I wasn’t losing any power.
  • The shoes are certainly breathable and allowed lots of airflow.  I would not recommend these shoes for winter riding without shoe covers.
  • I have been testing quite a few cycling shoes an one thing I am constantly having to do is adjust the seat height based on the cycling shoes stack height.  These fall in between the Crono R1s and the Bonts.  I had to lower my traditional seat height slightly to test these out.  Something to consider when buying cycling shoes.

P.R.O. Leader v4 Features BOA IP1 Dials

Pearl Izumi added 2 of BOA’s top of the line IP1 dials that are dual directional and have easy micro-adjustment functionality.  The dials utilize quick release simply by pulling up and and are engaged by pushing in.  Turn to the right to tighten and to the left to loosen. EASY PEASY!

  • NEW 1:1 Zero Distraction Upper Fit mitigates foot discomfort by avoiding the soft tissue running along the top of the foot
  • Advanced 3-Layer Seamless Composite Upper offers exceptional breathability and eliminates hot spots by adapting to your unique foot shape
  • Unibody construction eliminates traditional lasting board to deliver super low 5mm stack height for maximum pedaling efficiency
  • Zonal Bi-directional Closure wraps the foot for a semi-custom fit and secure foot retention
  • Dual Boa® IP1 dials allow 1 mm micro-adjustability and pop up for full release
  • 1:1 Integrated Carbon Power Plate delivers feather-light stiffness (stiffness rating of 13)
  • 1:1 Insole System allows independent left and right arch and forefoot varus canting adjustability for optimal pedaling mechanics
  • Replaceable heel bumper
  • Retail: $350.00

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoes | Bottom Line

Pearl Izumi has built a reputation for making fantastic cycling products and the Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader 4 is just another great example of their devotion to the sport.

You will not be disappointed with how the P.R.O. Leader 4 performs in and out of the saddle.

Looking forward to a V5 version, I expect slight changes to the upper with a more softer feel and possibly changes to the heel material.  As far as BOA positioning and Carbon stiffness, I am not really sure there is any room for improvement.  The shoes perform extremely well and I expect to see these shoes on Pros and Amateur cyclists alike.

Welcome to our Bont Vaypor S Cycling Shoe Review.  In 2017 we were fortunate to attend Interbike and make a lot of cycling industry contacts, one of which was able to introduce us to Bont Cycling and their cycling shoe line.

Bont Vaypor S Pearl White One

My knowledge of Bont goes back to the late 80’s early 90’s when I for a period of time was an INLINE RACERerererer.  Back then the most widely known inline skate company was called Rollerblade and their name became synonymous for inline skating and the sport was often referred to as Rollerblading.  It was a funny time because many people had not seen people on inline skates.   The term inline simple means wheels all in a row.  It was rather fun getting weird looks and people asking what are those things.

After a few years of rollerblading I decided to enter an Inline race.  Since the sport was relatively new, there weren’t a lot of races, but luckily I found one that was close by and entered.   It was a 10k format and took place on a police test track course.   The race was pretty uneventful and lets just say I got my ass handed to me.  It was a fun experience, but it seemed all the fast inline racers weren’t using Rollerblades like I was, but instead had these cool leather/carbon skate boots made by Bont.

At some point I too started to race in Bont skates and for a year or two had a blast.  After about two years my passion for inline racing faded and I started doing triathlons.  I still have those Bont Inline skates and they bring back fond memories of inline racing.

Bont Vapor S Cycling Shoe Review

Fast forward to 2017 and I got my second chance to wear Bonts and this time they’re called the Bont Vaypor S cycling shoes.

Bont Cycling History

Bont got it start in 1975 when Inze Bont, a recreational skater decided to fiberglass the back of his leather skates to gain extra support. A simple, yet innovative approach launched the company known for it’s carbon skates and cycling shoes.

The company evolved from working with materials such as fiberglass (1975) to Kevlar (1986) to Carbon (1989) and have continued the trend of making custom carbon shoes and boots ever since.

In 2007 the company expanding into cycling and by the 2008 Beiging Olympics had 8 Gold metals winners wearing their cycling shoes.

Bont Vaypor S Cycling Shoe Review

A month or so after Interbike we received our first Bont Cycling shoes to review.  The shoes came in traditional black with a white stripe.

Bont Vaypor S Black

Unfortunately the Vaypor’s run about 1/2 size smaller than most and so as a result I had to returned them.  Bont quickly sent out another pair in pearly white with blue stripes that were 1/2 larger.  I typically wear a size 43.5 in cycling shoes and the new Bonts were size 44, which felt fit.

Bont Vaypor S Cycling Shoe Review

The Bont Vaypor S cycling shoes arrived.

Bont Vaypor Size 44

The Vaypor S runs about 1/2 smaller than most typical cycling shoes.

Bont Vaypor S Daul BOA Dials

Bont Vaypor S with dual BOA IP1 Dials

The Vaypor S is one step down from the newly released Bont Helix (Retail $399).  Instead of a single BOA closure system, the Vaypor has 2.

Bont Helix Cycling Shoe Single Boa

One of the first things you will notice when trying on a pair of the Bont Vaypor S cycling shoes is the extra wide toe box that Bont refers to as their Ergoshell.  The shoe’s fit sort of reminds me of the running shoe company called Altra, who also utilize a wide toe box similar in design.  Heck if you like Birkenstocks, these will have a similar fit as far as toe spacing is concerned.

Bont Vaypor S Anatomical-Forefoot-Shape

Bont’s Ergoshell design allows the foot to function in its most efficient and anatomically correct position.  It also provides greater pedaling force because the toes are spread out naturally covering more surface area rather than squished.  In other words you have the potential to create more power or watts.  I didn’t notice any power change, trying these on verse other cycling shoes I have used, so maybe it’s marketing hype or requires some type of adaptation to occur first.

I did feel I had a lot of power when standing up, but I attribute that to the stiff carbon soles more than anything else.

Bont Vaypor Cycling Shoe Review BOA IP1 dials

Bont Vaypor S with dual BOA IP1 Dials

Bont Vaypor S Retention-System

The Bont Vaypor S employs BOA’s dual directional micro adjustable IP1 dials.   When tightening the dials, the upper design wraps and pulls the foot rearwards without any excess pressure for a really snug fit.

You can really crank down the tension to get a super snug fit.

Bont Vaypor S Unidirectional Carbon and Micro Carbon Grid

The bottoms of the Vaypor S are made using unidirectional carbon fibre.  The use of carbon fiber creates a super stiff yet lightweight shoe.  The shoes come with a Micro Grid at the front to help align cleat placement.

When wearing the shoes you definitely know you’re wearing carbon as the sole it’s extremely stiff.  based on other shoes I have tested, the Vaypor’s are probably the stiffest of the bunch.  There essentially is no flex when standing or during a sprint.  The shoes are wicked stiff.

Bont Vaypor S Toe and Heel Protection

Bont added a rubber bumper at the front of the shoe and a heal guard to provide extra protection and improve grip when walking.

Bont Vaypor S Anti-Stretch

You can’t see it, but Bont added some anti stretch material that is sandwiched between the outer layer and the inner liner.  The material is claimed to stop the cycling shoes from stretching over time.

I suppose this could be a good or bad depending on fit.  I have noticed with certain cycling shoes they tend to get more comfortable over time as they stretch to adjust to the foot.  Bont’s material is designed to prevent the shoes from stretching, which might mean they may never feel as good as they could.

Bont’s answer to shoe fit however is to allow the shoes to be custom molded using heat.  In essence you simply put the shoes in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes (Temp 160 degrees), allowing them to heat up, take them out and while still warm you put them on to mold to your feet.

Bont Vaypor S Stack Height

The Vaypor S stack height (3.6 mm) is really low compared to many of the cycling shoes out there.  So low in fact it is one of the only cycling shoes I have tested that is really noticeable and forces me to change my seat height when testing them.  It can be sort of a pain if you have multiple brands of cycling shoes of various stack heights and have to move the saddle up or down.

Bont Vaypor S Ventilation

The Vapors have ventilation holes, screen mesh at the front and bottom vents on the bottom allowing air into the shoe, but I didn’t find them to be as well ventilated as the Pearl Izumi PRO Leader 4 or SIDIs.  They are more on par with the Crono CR1 or Fi’zi:k R1B cycling shoes.

Bont Vaypor S Ventilation Air Flow

Final Observations | Bont Vaypor S Cycling Shoe Review

If you’re looking for a sick light set of cycling shoes (230 grams), the Bont Vaypor S is a fantastic choice.  With BOA’s top of the line IP1 Dials, a custom moldable shoe and an extremely stiff carbon sole, the Vaypor is running on all cylanders.

It is a must try on cycling shoe and those who have tend to rave about the performance it delivers.

Italian flare + cycling shoes = perfection.  The 2017 Crono CR1 Cycling Shoes are just about perfect.  They have the right amount of color and performance to win over many cycling enthusiasts.  At the 2017 Interbike show, I got a chance to check out Crono’s new lineup of cycling shoes.  I hadn’t heard of Crono (http://www.cronoteam.it/), so I was excited to see what they had to offer.

Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe Review | 2017

Crono Cycling History

Crono Cycling LogoThe Crono brand has been around for 44 years and was established in 1973.  I was told that Crono also worked on the Fi’zi:k brand of cycling shoes, but I could be wrong on this.  Crono is family owned and has been since it’s inception.  The company’s factory is based in Treviso, Italy.

Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe Review | 2017

This week the Crono CR1’s arrived and I got my first chance to ride with them.  To say I was pumped is an understatement.  The CR1’s deliver great comfort and fit.  They run true to size and have a better lacing system than the Fi’zi:k R1B UOMOs.

The Crono CR1 pair of cycling shoes size 43.5 arrive safe and sound.

Crono R1 Cycling Shoe Boa lacing system Side

We received the CR1 in white with black and red accents.  An absolutely brilliant color scheme.

Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe 2018

The Crono comes standard with 2 Boa IP1-S double way closure with nylon coated steel lace systems.  The dials have the ability to tighten or loosen with a micro adjustment click.  The Crono also has laser holes on the side to help with ventilation.

Crono Bottom Adjustment Boa 2018

The lower BOA system really provides a lot of tension if needed, which is evenly distributed on the lower sides of the feet.

Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe Inside 2018

The shoes require a bit more finesse when putting them on due to the large strap.  I found I had to open loosen up the BOA tension all the way.

The shoes come with a standard 3 hole system.  I wasn’t exactly sure what the middle sliding bracket was for.

Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe Review Bottom

The absolute beauty of the shoe is both on the top an bottom.  Just look at the great lettering and carbon weave.  It is just stunning.  By looking at the heal cup you wouldn’t realize it’s replaceable, but it is.  Just another nice touch Crono employs.  The heal cup is screwed in from the inside of the shoe, eliminating screw port on the outside.

Added the standard Shimano SPD SL cleats

Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe Review Underside

You can see the cleat sticks out a bit on either side of the sole.

Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe Review

The CR1 Cycling Shoe is Crono’s top the line performance road cycling shoe.  Crono breaks their road shoes out into 4 categories including CR1, CR2, CR3 and CR4.   With each category drop, the shoes have less high end qualities.  The CR4 cycling shoes for example do away with the the Boa closure system and replace it with velcro straps and buckles.

You have 4 color options with the CR1 including White, Black, Red and Gold.

Like most high end cycling shoes the Crono uses Boa’s IP1-S double way closure system, which allows you to back off tension by turning the Boa clockwise or popping up the Boa nob.

Multi Contact Closure System

Crono has developed what they call a Multi Contact Closure System, that hugs the foot in place.  When I tried on the shoes, I felt like I could really crank down the tension to get a super secure fit.  Crono claims the new closure system prevents the heal from moving and reduces foot slippage.

Crono CR1 multi-contact Boa dial closure System Road Cycling Shoes

People who have wide feet, might have issues with these shoes, since my impression is they run normal to slim.

Synthetic Microfiber Upper and Molded Carbon Bottom

The shoes come with a synthetic microfiber upper and molded carbon bottom, which certainly makes them stiff and perfect on climbs.  Like many of their competitors, the shoes do come with replaceable heels cups, which are helpful if you walk in your shoes a lot.  At first I didn’t realize the help cup was replaceable until I removed the shoe insert and saw the heal cup screw.

Crono uses an anti-slip material in the heel to prevent slippage and it feels much like sharkskin.

Crono CR1 Ventilation

Crono uses laser drilled holes on the sides and aeration on the tongue.  It also comes with a mesh air port on the bottom to increase airflow throughout the shoe.

Crono CR1 Weight

The Crono CR1’s are claimed to weigh 235g, but the ones I was sent (Size 43.5) came in at 324g.  A 89 gram difference, so depending on your size, your shoes will vary.

Crono R1 Cycling Shoe 2017 Black

The CR1 comes in 3 flavors, Black, White and Red.  They all look hot.  For those that like white, these will get dirty on the tips when cycling.  I have a par of white Fi’zi:k R1B and I am always cleaning them.

Crono R1 Cycling Shoe Boa lacing system Side

The Crono CR1’s use a dual Boa lacing system called the Boa® IP1-S double way closure.  The laces are nylon coated steel that are supposed to hold up to a lot of cycling abuse.  I tried on a 43 at the show and was really able to crank down on the laces more so than my other cycling shoes.  The shoes were a bit small, I wear a size 43.5, but I probably could have worn them if needed.

The shoes run true to size.

Bottom Line | Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe Review

The Crono CR1 look absolutely stunning and many companies could learn from Crono’s Italian craftsmanship.  Sizing on these shoes was perfect with zero complaints.  The BOA IP1-S double way closure system is one of the best I have used, creating the perfect amount of tension throughout the shoe.   You’re able to really crank down on either BOA or both if needed for a super snug fit.

I did find the shoes to run a bit hot and they would probably not be my first choice if the temps are above 85 degrees.  While the CR1 do have laser hole cutouts and some venting at the front bottom of the shoe,  there are other shoes on the market that have better venting properties and more air flow.

Crono does offer the CR2, which looks to have a ton of venting at the toe of the shoe and also along the tongue.  What is missing from the CR2 is the the wide strap at the top that the CR1 has.  For spring, fall and winter the CR1 is a clear winner.  If it’s summer I would opt for the CR2 to help keep the feet a bit cooler.  The CR2 is available in two versions – one with the full carbon sole (235g each) like the CR1 and the other with a carbon-reinforced nylon sole (270g).

crono-cr2-white-02

The retail price point on the shoes is $449.00, which is certainly something to think about, but I haven’t seen a better quality cycling shoe.  In this case you definitely get what you pay for and that is a fantastic cycling shoe with killer looks and amazing functionality.

Crono CX Cycling Shoes

Crono also carries a line of off road shoes including the CX2, CX3 and CX4.  The CX2 is roughly equivalent to Crono’s CR2 road shoes, but made to be a bit beefier for cyclecross and mountain biking.  They also have a winter shoe known as the CW1 and triathlon shoe called the CT1.

2017 Top Road Bike Cycling Shoes

Every shoe listed in our review are considered the top of the line cycling shoes with a retail price point between $250 to $400.  Depending on your cycling habits, most of these shoes should last a few seasons unless you’re really hard on them.  I tend to rotate cycling shoes every ride, which makes them last longer.  I still have cycling shoes from 6 years ago that are still in good shape.

  • Bont Vapor
  • FI’ZI:K R1 B Uomo
  • Giro Empire SLX
  • Giro Prolight Techlace
  • Luis Garneau Course Air Light
  • Sidi Wire
  • Specialized S-Works 6
  • Vittoria Ikon

Bont Vapor Cycling Shoe
Bont Vapor Cycling Shoes

Manufacture’s website: http://www.bontcycling.com/

Bont has been in the shoe business for quite some time.  I was first introduced to Bond back in the early 90’s when I raced inline skates.  They made super stiff inline boots.  Back then though the boots were a bit too stiff for my liking.  Fast forward and now Bont is makings some outstanding cycling shoes.

The Bont Vapor is their top of the line shoe.  It comes in both standard and custom.  They also have an old school lace up in the Vapor lineup.

fizik UOMO Cycling Shoes 2017

FI’ZI:K R1B UOMO Cycling Shoes

Manufacture’s Website: http://www.fizik.it

The FIZIK R1B UOMO (pronounced FI’ZI:K) Cycling Shoes look super interesting.  They sort of remind us of football trainers.  Again not as flashy as Sidi or Vittoria, they certainly look like they would get the job done.

What really makes the R1B UOMO stand out is the unique BOA closure setup.  The top tongue and wires wrap to the right rather than over the foot, potentially eliminating pressure points that a traditional lacing system could cause.

GIRO-Empire-SLX-cycling-shoes 2017

GIRO EMPIRE SLX Cycling Shoes

Manufacture’s Website: http://www.giro.com/

While most cycling companies are still utilizing BOA closure systems on their top of the line cycling shoes, GIRO is going old school lacing and producing shoes that are wicked light.

It remains to be see whether this is a fad or something many cycling shoe companies will start adopting.  One thing is for sure, you definitely do get a very custom fit with laces.  The negative of course is they are LACES and as such are more of a pain to get in and out of the shoes.  The other negative of course is you don’t really have the ability to adjust them on the fly like you do with the BOA or BOA like systems.

Giro_S_Prolight Techlace 2017

GIRO ProLight Techlace Cycling Shoes

Giro ProLight Techlace is altogether unique in cycling shoe world.  Rather than use the BOA closure system, GIRO has developed a new lacing system they have dubbed Techlace™.  The Techlace uses velcro straps with laces to adjust fit.  I was a bit apprehensive that it would actually work, but to my surprise it not only works but gives you an exceptional fit.  The only downside I can see is that the shoe potentially aren’t as aero as shoes with the BOA system.

Luis Garneau course-air-lite-cycling-shoes 2017

Luis Garneau Course Air Lite Cycling Shoe

Manufacture’s website: https://garneau.com

The Course Air Lite is Luis Garneau’s top of the line road shoe for 2017.  Incorporating a 2 BOA lacing system that is common among top cycling shoes.  The Course Air Lite road shoes are Garneau’s lightest shoe yet. The Carbon HM X-Lite outsole with titanium inserts is ultra-light and rigid for better power transfer, and the 4.3 mm carbon platform brings your feet closer to the pedal for even more power.

Sidi-Wire-Road-Cycling-Shoes | 2017 | Racing

Sidi Wire Cycling Shoes

Manufacture’s Website: http://www.sidi.com

Sidi consistently brings it year after year.  The Sidi Wire is both good looking and functional.  The Wire is in our opinion the best looking shoe of 2016.  It has killer graphics and the TECHNO-3 PUSH dials work.  The shoes fit and perform flawlessly.

Like the more mountainous Drako, the Wires come chalk full of features including

  • Microfibra TechPro
  • Soft Instep System
  • Adjustable Heel Retention Device –
  • TECHNO-3 PUSH dials

Specialized-S-Works-6-Cycling-Shoes 2017

Specialized S-Works 6 Cycling Shoes

Manufactures Website: https://www.specialized.com/

Specialized always is at the top of the heap when it comes to cycling shoes.  Their shoes are generally more minimal than many of their competitors, yet they fit like a glove.  While their shoes certainly aren’t as flashy as Vittoria or Sidi, they definitely get the job done.

One issue we have with these shoes is the Velcro closure at the top of the toe box.  It seems to take away from the overall sleek look.

The Specialized PadLock heel, combined with revolutionary strong and lightweight materials in the upper, creates a snug fit that is incredibly secure.

Vittoria-IKON-Cycling-Shoes 2017

Vittoria IKON CYCLING SHOES

Manufacture’s Website: http://www.vittoria-shoes.com/

Another favorite of our is the Vittoria IKON.  The IKON is a high performance cycling shoe proudly made in Italy.  Like the Sidi Wire, Vittoria brings it with the IKON.  Killer graphics and fun colors make this shoe stand out.

Like the IKON MTB, the IKON Road shoes come with Vittoria’s SSP micrometrics fastening system.  Rather than slapping on a BOA system, Vittoria makes their own unique ratcheting mechanism that works.  The soles are extremely stiff carbon, perfect for hard sprints and hills.

So you want to stand out in a crowd, well for those who know anything about cycling, the Sidi Shot Cycling Shoes will certainly get you there.

Sidi Shot Cycling Shoe Blue Sky

The Shot is Sidi’s top of the line road cycling shoe and it has plenty to boast about.  The design bleeds Italian through and through and it is in our opinion one of the most beautiful works of cycling craftsmanship we have seen.

Sidi repositioned where the rotary dials are located from the side of the shoe to a central position mounted on top of the tongue.  This could be good or bad in our opinion.  Having the dials on the side elevates a pressure point that could be present with the dials on the top of the foot.  It remains to be seen if the other Sidi shoes will adopt this type of change.  We had tested out the Vittoria HORO EVO and found that as you tighten the shoes a pressure point builds over the foot.  Maybe having two dials instead of one like the HORA EVO has reduces this problem.

The Sidi Shot comes in 5 flavors including a Sky Blue, Bright Yellow, Matt Black, Red/White and White.

VENT CARBON SOLE

Sidi Shot Cycling Shoe Vent Carbon Sole

The VENT CARBON Sole features a light and replaceable heel pad in polyurethane to improve walkability and a replaceable integrated toe pad/vent cover. The key benefits of the VENT CARBON Sole are not only superior power transfer, because of its light weight and stiffness, but also warm weather comfort. The VENT CARBON Sole is designed with an integrated vent and air channels for heat dissipation and air flow. The vent can be opened or closed for 4-season comfort. To open the vent, simply loosen the screw, slide the triangular piece towards the front of the shoe and tighten the screen again.  To close the vent simply loosen the screw, slide the triangular piece towards the back of the shoe and tighten the screen again.

The VENT CARBON Sole is handmade exclusively of carbon fiber in a weave pattern oriented at opposing angles that maximize stiffness while allowing for a small degree of controlled flex in the toe area. This carefully designed flex biomechanically relieves stress on the plantar tendon and helps promote circulation.

The VENT CARBON Sole features a standard 3-hole drilling pattern, printed 10 mm lateral and fore/aft cleat alignment scale as well as the Look Memory Eyelet for easy cleat alignment and replacement. For triathlon, the vent also serves as a water drain, dramatically improving foot comfort after a wet transition.

SIDI SHOT CYCLING SHOES TECHNOLOGY

The Shot cycling shoes boasts 4 main technical areas of adjustment, fit and comfort.

  • DOUBLE TECNO-3 PUSH SYSTEM
  • REFLEX ADJUSTABLE HEEL RETENTION DEVICE
  • SIDI HEEL CUP
  • ANTISLIP REPLACEABLE HEEL PAD

DOUBLE TECNO-3 PUSH SYSTEM

Sidi Shot Cycling Shoes DOUBLE TECNO 3 PUSH SYSTEM

The DOUBLE TECNO 3 PUSH SYSTEM is inserted on a single base, this speeds up wearing and taking off shoes. The central mechanism creates a perfect tension balance between the shoe’s internal and external side. The symmetrical mechanism guarantees an excellent closure adapting on every instep. An innovative button added to the monofilament buckle, if pushed, lifts the buckle to facilitate the adjustment.

REFLEX ADJUSTABLE HEEL RETENTION DEVICE

Sidi Shot Cycling Shoes REFLEX ADJUSTABLE HEEL RETENTION DEVICE

The REFLEX ADJUSTABLE HEEL RETENTION DEVICE reinforces the top of the heel cup and improves the fit by closing the back of the shoe securely around the rider’s heel. The heel retention device tightens the top of the heel cup so that the heel doesn’t slide out during steep climbs or sprints. Each side of the heel can be adjusted independently, for a perfect fit. For a custom adjustment turn the screw towards the + sign to tighten the heel retention device and towards the – sign to open it. Light weight, easy to use, and replaceable. For additional security while pedaling, the new adjustable heel device is provided with reflex inserts for more visibility in dark conditions.

SIDI REINFORCED HEEL CUP

Reinforced cup that stabilizes and supports the heel. Anatomically shaped plastic, reduces heel slip and provides increased power transfer. Provides additional foot protection in the event of a crash.

ANTISLIP REPLACEABLE HEEL PAD

Sidi Shot Cycling Shoe Replaceable heel Tacco Antiscivolo

For walkability, Sidi cycling shoes include a replaceable polyurethane heel pad. SHOT’s heel pad has a new design and it is very light.

CHRIS FROOME TEAM SKY

Chris Froome of Team Sky Tour De France (TDF 2017) giving the Sidi Shot the thumbs up.  You will notice that Chris’s shoe is slightly different than the production models.  His is missing the heel retention device.

BOTTOM LINE

Sidi has made some killer shoes with some fantastic updates.  Unfortunately we haven’t had a chance to really put the shoes to the test, so we can only give our observations.  Based on other shoes we have reviewed like the Vittoria Ikon or the Fi’zi:k R1B, Sidi looks like they have a winner.  The shoes look to be a bit more breathable than either the Vittoria or Fi’zi:k, with it’s mesh front, but until we have had a chance to ride with them, we can only assume.

The only negative we can see is of course the price tag.  At $549, there are a lot of really good top end shoes for about $150-$250 less.

The Fizik R1B Uomo actually spelled Fi’zi:k is their top of the line road cycling shoe.

For 2017 we reached out to Fi’zi:k to get a pair of the R1Bs and put them to the test. Over the years we have tested many of the top named cycling shoes and we were really interested in seeing what Fi’zi:k had to offer.

HISTORY

Fizik got it’s start in 1996 as a brand made for high performance cycling. The fi’zi:k brand was designed in the USA, and handmade in Italy by the world’s largest saddle manufacturer, Selle Royal.

Fi’zi:k are the largest producers of racing saddles in the world, making an astounding 500,000 saddles each year in their factory in Bressanvido, in the northern Italian province of Vicenza.

Fi’zi:k is the phonetic spelling of the word physique, referring to the form or state of the human body. Often associated with general fitness and athletics, the word is also used in many contexts to illustrate physical strength and superb health. – ie. a powerful physique, a healthy physique.

In its phonetic form, fi’zi:k inspires other associations. Visually, the symbol conveys a sense of something scientific, technological or mathematical; and audibly, something fresh, effervescent, energetic and lively. Since the beginning, fi’zi:k’s mission has been simple: to improve the ride experience for all cyclists.

The shoes came properly packed with extra packing inside the shoes.

Fizik R1 Road Cycling Putting Them On

Putting them on you can see the cool styling from above.  Very clean lines.

Fizik R1 Road Cycling Side Profile

The shoes come with 2 Boa closure dials that are the best we have seen in the industry. The dials are really easy to adjust and are the perfect size to adjust while cycling.  I am willing to say right here that their choice of their particular boa dials are the best we have ever tested.  The dials are super easy to reach while cycling and are just the right size to twist and turn.  Perfection doesn’t get any better.

Fizik R1 Road Cycling Bottoms

There are 3 holes for SPD compatible cleats to attach.  If you are a Speedplay user, you will need Speedplays adapter plate, which comes standard with Speedplay pedals.

Fizik R1 Road Cycling Bottoms 2

Fizik R1 Road Cycling Replaceable heels

The shoes come with a replaceable heel should yours wear down.  I found the heels a bit more slippery when walking compared to other shoe manufacturers.  My guess is these heals should last a really long time given their tough material.

Fizik R1 Road Cycling Air Flow In FrontFizik R1 Road Cycling Air Flow In Back

The F1’s have booth front and rear vents, allowing a bit of air to flow into the shoes from the bottom.  In 85 degree weather the shoes didn’t feel like they would overheat.

Here are the Fizik F1’s with Shimano Cleats.

BACKGROUND

The R1B predecessor had a kangaroo leather upper which has now been replaced with a Microtex synthetic material.  The older version had two Velcro straps and ratchet.  Those have been replaced in favor of a pair of Boa dials (Smart Move).  Needless to say the updates are impressive.

Fizik R1 Old Version vs New Version

FIRST RIDE – PRESSURE POINTS

On the first ride the shoes for the most part felt pretty good, but as the ride went on they started feeling a bit tight on the upper part of the foot.  As you can see from the picture below, the red area is where I had issues.

Fizik R1 Road Cycling First Day Ride

Now part of this could have been my fault for over cranking the boa shoe dials.  YES you can crank these babies and be super snug in the shoes.  I did it because I was attacking some hills and wanted a really tight grip around my foot.

Since the first ride, things have gone on without a hitch and I haven’t had the same issue.  It could have been a combination of over-tightening plus the shoes needing to stretch a bit.

The pressure points are still in the same area, but not tightening the shoes as much solved the issue of it feeling uncomfortable.

Fizik R1 Umo pressure points

If I could engineer one change, it might be to make the rubber tip on the shoe’s tongue out of softer material.  The rubber doesn’t flex as much as it could.

Fi’zi:k R1B TOE BOX

The shoes have a wide toe box giving your toes plenty of wiggle room to stretch and move about, but not so much that it’s annoying.

VOLUME CONTROL

Fi’zi:k incorporates their own proprietary technologies into their shoes called Volume Control and Carbon Outsole.

Is a unique new shoe fitting technology developed exclusively by fi’zi:k. By adjusting the tension of the foremost Boa control, the shape of each shoe can be changed individually and adapted to fit perfectly around any rider’s foot, enhancing comfort and ultimately performance. Changing the tension of the rear-most Boa control – the Extended Power Strap – will adjust the fit of the heel cup around the rider’s foot. The ability to easily tighten the grip here results in increasing power transfer and thus maximizing performance.

CUSTOM UNIDIRECTIONAL CARBON OUTSOLE

Custom unidirectional carbon or carbon reinforced nylon soles mean every precious watt goes straight into your pedals. Sculpted footbeds and supportive heel forming keep feet securely cradled without any hot spots or crush zones.

COLOR CHOICE

The Fi’zi:k currently comes in 4 flavors.  We were sent the White and love the look.  Every ride thus far they have gotten a bit dirty up front due to wheel rub marks.  The good news is they seem to clean up fairly nicely with soap and water.

I would love to see some more exotic colors, like bright orange or purple.

COMPETITION

We dropped in on Mellow Jonny’s bike shop in downtown Austin, Texas to check out some of the Fi’zi:k competition.  Mellow Johnny’s is Lance Armstrong’s world headquarters.

Mellow Johnnys Bike Store Lance Amstrong Austin

Mellow Johnny’s carries Fi’zi:k and 2 other high end road shoes including the Bontrager XXX Road Shoe and Shimano’s RC9 road cycling shoe.

Fizik R1 vs Bontrager XXX Road Shoe

Fizik R1 vs Shimano RC9

All the shoes fall into the $400 price range and all are using the Boa closure system.  Of the 3 the Fi’zi:k’s felt the most comfortable.  Of course there are other brands out there that also compete including Sidi, Vittoria IKON and others.

We feel pretty confident though that the Fi’zi:k engineering team did a great job in the design and function of the cycling shoe.  Their lacing system definitely stands out and makes the shoes very sleek.  Most of the high end cycling shoe company’s all seem to be using the boa closesure system.

Both the Bontrager XXX Road Shoe and Shimano’s RC9 provide a bit more air flow up front compared to the R1, which could make the shoes a little cooler during the hot summer months.

BOTTOM LINE

We absolutely love the look of the Fi’zi:k R1b UOMOs.  The shoes are really a joy to cycling with.  The boa closure system works flawlessly and can be adjusted on the fly without even looking down.

Huge kodos go out to Fi’zi:k’s design and testing team for an amazing update to the previous version.

Today we have the Vittoria IKON Cycling Shoe Review you have been waiting for.  What that you say? Never heard of them, who are they?  Well you’re in for a treat.  Vittoria hit our radar in 2011 and have been on there ever sense.

VITTORIA HISTORY

Vittoria hails from Italy and it should come as no surprise that they definitely have a flair for fashion.  Italians and Italian companies know how to create great looking products and match them to exciting color schemes.  Our first adventure into the Vittoria line was a shoe by the name of Vittoria HORA.  At that time, the Hora was cutting edge technology for cycling shoes.  It blended a carbon bottom sole with a synthetic upper.

What makes Vittoria cycling shoes unique in our modern times is they are 100% hand made rather than pumped out of some factory in China.  The Hora used Vittoria’s exclusive rotor closure system.  This also makes Vittoria shoes rather unique, since most cycling shoes on the market today use the Boa closure system.  Vittoria was actually the first cycling shoe company to incorporate a closure system on cycling shoes back in 1992.

Fast forward to 2017 and we came upon Vittoria’s newest creation, the IKON cycling shoe.  As soon as we saw it, we knew it was a must have for review.  One thing that immediately jumped out was how Vittoria changed the location of the closure mechanisms.  Instead of one being over the foot, they placed both closures on the left.  This in my mind has a very positive effect on comfort.  With the closure over the foot, as you tighten it down, pressure is created, which in some cases can make the shoes uncomfortable.

Switching the location means you can tighten the shoe without feeling a pressure point over the foot.

The shoes also appear a bit more streamlined with less areas to trap wind.  I haven’t seen any wind tunnel tests, but I am quite certain, the IKON would fair much better than then HORA.

Vittoria removed all the mesh areas on the shoes that were present on the HORA, with the exception of the carbon bottoms, which seem to be identical.

While the IKON does have more laser cut holes in the upper, the lack of mesh will make the shoe slightly warmer.

One welcome addition to the IKON is a replaceable heel.  Most cyclists will at one point or another walk in their shoes and the heel is often worn down over time.  While not effecting the performance of the shoe while cycling, being able to replace the heel cup is always a plus.

The IKON introduces the next level in closure systems called the Vittoria IKON ROTOR SPP.  Unlike the Boa system that uses metal cables, Vittoria opted for some type of synthetic string.  I assume this makes the system a bit lighter, but may sacrifice longevity.  We haven’t had the shoes long enough to test out my theory and probably will not run into any issue for many years.

Vittoria added a really nice feature to the heal that they call Tallone Anti-Scalzata.  Not speaking Italian, it translates into “Anti-Heel” something or other.  Basically it’s feels like a cat’s tongue or maybe sharks skin.  It’s sort of smooth brushing downward and rough brushing upward.  The Tallone Anti-Scalzata is designed to keep your heel more securely fastened into the shoe by making it harder for your heel to move upward and it seems to work.  A similar feature was used in my older Shimano’s M-315 MTB shoes.  Shimano refers to it as their anti-slip heel lining and it works.

The IKON comes with a heat treated customizable insole.  To mold the insoles to your feet, Vittoria recommends using an oven set to 200 degrees.  Simply place the insoles on a cookie sheet for 2 minutes.  After 2 minutes remove the insoles and put them in your shoes.  They recommend doing it quickly because the insoles can harden within 45 seconds.  Once in your shoes, put on both shoes and stand in them for about 3 minutes.  After that the insoles should be custom to your feet.

Note: You should be wearing socks when performing the molding procedure.

Where the IKON and the HORA have some commonality is in the Full Carbon UD Air system sole.  There are 4 mesh channels that provide airflow and unlike the unlike the HORA, the heel is removable.

Vittoria offers 4 different colors in the IKON including white, black, orange and green.  We were sent the Orange and we came to the conclusion that it is a very bright orange.  A side benefit of the orange color scheme we believe is added visibility while one the road.  Being so bright, the shoes are really hard not to miss.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

Well what can we say.  Vittoria is as cool as ever.  The Vittoria IKON is definitely a head turner in the cycling scene.  The bright orange and green will certainly get some major thumbs up.  We found that the Orange is especially useful while cycling on the road.  The bright color makes being seen very obvious.  A side benefit is you look like a pro, even if your an average Joe or Jane.

Having the 2 IKON ROTOR SPPs on the side of the shoe makes them very comfortable without creating pressure points on the top of the foot.   The lacing system works and your able to tighten the shoes as needed.

The only downside to the IKON is the price tag, but realistically cycling shoes last much longer than running shoes, so you really have to take that into consideration.  Being a big cyclist, skimping on cycling shoes makes for a less enjoyable ride, so for me the IKON is worth it’s price over something less stellar.

Check all the cool Vittoria gear including helmets, apparel and of course the Vittoria IKON.
