Last year Bollé introduced the Bollé Furo MIPS Cycling Helmet and this year we got a chance to check it out.

Bollé Furo MIPS Cycling Helmet Review

Bollé focuses on delivering quality sunglasses and goggles for performance and protection. But beyond eyewear, they also make pretty stellar cycling helmets.

Unboxing

Bollé Furo MIPS Cycling Helmet Unboxing

The Bollé Furo MIPS Cycling Helmet came in a typical helmet box. I was sent a size large for my big noggen and it fit perfectly. I would say the helmet is true to size and it does give you a bit of adjustability both by using the rear circular click adjuster and the internal straps.

Bollé Furo MIPS Cycling Helmet
Bollé Furo MIPS Cycling Helmet Wind Shells | Vent Plugs

What makes this helmet really unique compared to others I have tested is the ability to remove part of the helmet to increase airflow. This means the Furo is the perfect all-season helmet. In the summer you can remove the vent plugs to get more venting and put them back in during the winter months to keep your head a bit warmer.

Bollé Furo MIPS Cycling Helmet Front View

The helmet comes with 6 forward-facing vents, 1 top vent, 2 side vents, and 2 rear vents. The vents provide a ton of airflow allowing your head to keep cooler. For colder days 3 of the front vents can be closed.

Bollé Furo MIPS Cycling Helmet Rear View

The rear of the helmet drops off at a steep angle. This was done to provide better aerodynamics.

REVIEW

Our Bollé Furo MIPS Cycling Helmet came in a flat black color scheme with white lettering, which looks stellar. You have the option to increase or decrease the venting adding or removing the Bollé Wind Shells (i.e. vent plugs).

Once the helmet has been adjusted to fit your head (There are a few adjustment points inside the helmet), putting it on or taking it off is made easy by clicking or unclicking the chin strap and loosening or tightening the rear adjustment knob.

CLICK-TO-FIT™ SYSTEM

The Click-to-Fit™ System allows precise adjustment. On the road, you will be able to adjust helmet size and pressure to your head for perfect stability, fit and comfort.

Bollé Furo MIPS CLICK-TO-FIT™ SYSTEM

For the Bollé Furo MIPS Helmet you adjust fit by turning a dial and you can do this while riding without issue.

WIND SHELLS

One really unique feature of the Furo is what Bollé refers to as Wind Shells. The wind shells make your helmet more aerodynamic while bringing extra protection during bad weather.

Bollé Furo MIPS System Wind Shells

The shells or vent plugs allow the user to remove them during hot weather to allow more helmet venting or allow a user to add them for colder weather riding, racing, and bad weather.

NACA DUCT

Originally developed for aerospace, this submerged inlet provides less drag for better aerodynamics. It increases airflow inside the helmet, bringing a higher level of ventilation.

Not sure about the technical aspects of the helmet, but I did notice there was a really good amount of airflow when the helmet’s Wind Shells | Vent Plugs were removed.

ROLL CAGE

Mostly seen on racing cars, the roll cage is a specially engineered and constructed frame built into the vehicle compartment to protect from injuries in case of a rollover. Using this principle, Bollé decided to adapt the roll cage into the Furo construction. The roll cage reinforces the helmet, allowing Bollé to create larger vents to increase airflow.

Bollé Furo MIPS Roll Cage

360° INTEGRATED MIPS

A homogeneous system works better than two independent parts. Hence Bollé’s decision to combine the Mips Low Friction Layer and their helmet Fit System. The result is a seamless, lighter look inside the helmet, thus providing great fit & comfort for the longest rides.

In reality, the fit system really does a good job of keeping your head where it should be and having the helmet feel really good when on.

Bollé Furo MIPS 360 degree Integrated MIPS

MIPS

MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System and is designed to let a helmet slide relative to the head, adding more protection against rotational motion to the brain caused by angled impacts.

The simulation above illustrates strain in the brain from a similar angled impact when the user is wearing a helmet without MIPS and a helmet with MIPS.

MIPS enables a relative movement between the helmet and the head in any direction.

While I didn’t test the ability of MIPS to do its job, I did feel the Furo would do well in a crash. It’s a beefy helmet, in fact, it weighs more than most I have tried.

Bottom Line

I have to say I was really impressed with Bollé Furo MIPS. It’s a very solid helmet and is integrated with some of the best safety features I have seen.

The only downside to the helmet that I could see was the lack of any real early morning or nighttime reflective material or safety lights. While the helmet does provide ample places to add reflective material it would have been nice to have it already added.

The helmet retails $229, which for what you get matches the price. A lot of times people skimp on helmets instead of buying better ones get helmets that really aren’t good in preventing injury.

Currently, Bollé sells the Bollé Furo in 2 color schemes, black with white accents and white with black accents. I was sent the black color scheme and found it to be very appealing.

Check out Bollé’s website for more on their products and helmets.

Thousand, the brain child of Gloria Hwang, launched a very successful Kick Starter campaign for their Thousand Cycling Helmets.  Gaining traction with 2,274 backers and pledging $228,714 helped propel Thousand into the world of cycling.

Why Thousand Cycling Helmets?

Gloria didn’t wear cycling helmets, but after the loss of a friend in a cycling accident, she wondered why.  Going over the statistics she discovered there are roughly 1,000 bicycle-related fatalities every year and many more accidents where a person is permanently injured.   Many bicycle accidents involve the head hitting pavement or other hard objects.  To her this had become something more than just making a product, it had become a calling that would hopefully help save lives and prevent injury.

One reason for Gloria’s hesitation for wearing a cycling helmet, pertain to the style.  Many helmets simply looked too geeky or too roadie.  She wanted a helmet with style and something a bit retro.  Beyond that she wanted a helmet that people would actually want to wear, because it looked cool, yet still offered protection.  To that end Thousand became a reality.

Thousand Cycling Helmets Design Inspiration

Thousand Helmets were inspired by everything from vintage motorcycle helmets to Jack Kerouac’s travels.  From 7 a.m. commutes, to Sunday rides by the beach.  Heck I can see that Steve McQueen’s racing helmet had some influence.

REVIEW

Thousand Cycling Helmet Review

Not too long ago we were contacted about reviewing a helmet from a company called Thousand.  It was sort of funny timing, because I actually just saw the helmet at Mellow Johnny’s 2 days prior and thought it looked rather cool and very retro.  Normally we try to concentrate our reviews to road cycling and photography.  The Thousand Helmet is more of a commuter/city rider helmet and not something that a typical roadie would wear.  That said, since I am going to commute by bike this year, I thought it would be the perfect time to introduce a bike helmet like this.

When ordering the Thousand cycling helmet you will receive a package containing the helmet, fit pads, a helmet bag and owners manual.  We received a Heritage Thousand cycling helmet in size large with the Stealth Black color scheme.  The helmets currently come in 5 colors (Heritage collection) and 2 colors (Epoch collection).

Thousand Cycling Helmet Heritage Collection

Thousand Cycling Helmet Epoch Collection

Thousand Helmet Secret Poplock

Each Thousand helmet is designed with a magnetic pop-out section (hidden behind the logo mark) allowing you to use a U-lock or chain to lock your helmet.  As an added bonus, the Thousand company also provides a helmet theft guarantee.  We found that the pop-out section makes it super easy to lock the helmet with a U-lock.

thousand-features-helmet-poplock

Magnetic Chin Strap Buckle

One of the key features to the Thousand cycling helmets is a pinch-free magnetic chin strap buckle.  The buckle is super easy to use and clicks in easily.

thousand helmet chin strap magnetic buckle

Thousand Helmet Secret Vents

The Thousand Helmet comes with seven air vents (4 in the back and 3 on the top) and three cooling channels.  Living in a pretty hot climate, at least during the summer here in Austin, the lack of vents in the front does make this helmet run a bit hot.  My preference for a road helmet requires front vents, but since this helmet is more designed for cycling at a leisurely pace, I think the lack of frontal vents is probably fine.

Thousand Helmet Vegan Leather Straps

The helmets are designed using either a microfiber vegan leather strap or synthetic webbing.  Our Heritage helmet came with the synthetic webbing, which is pretty common among other bike helmets.  We found the helmet comfortable, but lacked adjustability of other helmets we have used.

Helmet adjustability is achieved by adjusting the chin strap and either side of the helmet straps.

For sizing it’s best to go smaller if you are on the fence between sizes.  The helmets come with interior fitpads that allow you to adjust the helmet fit if needed.

Product Specs

Thousand Cycling Helmet Product Specifications

Customer services is pretty legit and people seem very happy with them.

  • If between sizes, we recommend the smaller size. (See Fit Guide Photo for Sizing)
  • Built to meet CPSC and EN1078 standards.
  • Includes 2 sets of interior padding for a custom fit.
  • Lightweight helmet at 410g (S), 450g (M) or 490g (L).
  • Secret pop lock lets you lock your helmet with your bicycle with Anti-Theft Guarantee.
  • Retail $85

Bottom Line

Gloria and her Thousand team have come up with a great cycling helmet that is not only fashionable, but functional and seems to hit their target market perfectly.  For those looking to spice things up, check out Thousand’s website (https://www.explorethousand.com/) for cycling helmets and other cool gear.

Last year at Interbike I was introduced to Oakley’s new Oakley ARO Cycling Helmet line.  The AROs are Oakley’s first venture into the bike helmet industry and if they make as big a splash in bike helmet product line like they have done with cycling glasses, Oakley will be a dominate player.

The fact that Oakley is incorporating their Prizm eyewear technology into the ARO7  certainly will bolster sales.  Another key factor for Oakley is the ARO5 and ARO3 cycling helmets have been designed to integrate really well with their Jawbreaker cycling glasses.

Beyond the bike helmets, Oakley is also launching a cycling apparel line, all of which should be available for spring 2018.

Oakley ARO Cycling Helmet Review ARO7 ARO5 ARO3 Road

Oakley ARO Cycling Helmets For 2018

The Oakley Cycling Helmets for 2018 include

  • Oakley ARO7 (Aero Racing / Time Trial Helmet) – The ARO7 was designed specifically for time trials and triathlons with a very aero profile and integrated cycling glasses.
  • Oakley ARO5 (Road Racing Helmet) – The ARO5 is geared towards roadies with qualities of the aero helmet ARO7, but contain vents to help cool the rider down.
  • Oakley ARO3 (Least Expensive / Most Ventilated Helmet) – The ARO3 is the most ventilated of the 3 containing wider vents than the ARO5.

The Oakley Cycling Helmet Series is Oakley’s new dynamic range of premium road racing helmets specializing in seamless optics integration, aero performance and thermoregulation.

All helmets utilize the MIPs technology, which stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System.  MIPS was developed by the biomechanics specialists at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.  The technology is designed to help prevent brain injury by mimicking aspects of the brains cerebrospinal fluid.

Oakley AR07 Cycling Helmet PolishedBlack

The ARO7 Cycling Helmet is Oakley’s top of the line aero cycling helmet which is designed for events such as triathlons and road time trials.

The Oakley ARO7 Time Trial helmet comes with 2 lenses or visors including a clear lens and a darker lens Oakley calls Prizim.  The lenses attach to the helmet using magnets, which makes swapping out a lens super easy.  I did notice the Prizim lens attracts finger prints and smudges, so owners will probably be cleaning the lenses a lot.

Oakley uses the Boa FS1-1 dial retention system.  They have designed the Boa system to use an ultra thin lace which is  said to reduce pressure on a rider’s temple.

The ARO7 includes MIPs technology to help reduce or eliminate brain damage should a cycling accident occur while using the helmet.

Oakley ARO7 Cycling Helmet Right Side

The ARO7 has minimal vents on the side.  I would probably overheat in this helmet.  I did notice the Prizim lenses did get a lot of finger prints, but looked pretty cool.

Oakley ARO Cycling Helmet BOA

The Oakley helmets use the Boa closure system.

Oakley ARO Boa Retention cord

It’s a little blurry, but Oakley uses a really thin cord for their Boa System.  They say it helps reduce any pressure points on the head.

The ARO7 Prizm lens.  Notice the smug and finger print marks.  You will probably be cleaning these after every use.

Oakley ARO7 Cycling Helmet Magnet

2 magnets secure the lenses to the ARO7 helmet.

Oakley ARO7 Cycling Helmet Side

Oakley uses 2 magnets at the top of the lens to attach them to the helmet.  It was really easy to swap out lenses.

The ARO7 should be available in both Matte Black or Matte White and have both clear and Prizm lenses.

Oakley ARO5 Review | Oakley ARO5 Cycling Helmet Review

Oakley AR05 Cycling Helmet NeonOrange

Oakley’s ARO5 cycling helmet is a step down from the ARO7 in terms of aero dynamics.  Oakley has removed the integrated optics, but says their current line of eyewear works seamlessly with the helmet’s design.  They have included a dedicated eyewear docking system that allows Oakley eyeglasses to attach to the front of the helmet.

Oakley said the helmet’s design and engineers took in factors such as when a cyclist has their head down rather than forward to make helmet as aero as possible.

Like the ARO7, the ARO5 comes with both Boa FS1-1 dial retention system and MIPs.

The ARO5 is expected to retail for $250

The ARO3 cycling helmet is Oakley least expensive most ventilated helmet design.  Similar to the ARO5, the ARO3 increases the venting with larger cooling ports.  While the ARO3 definitely has larger venting ports than the ARO5, at first look the Suomy Timeless Cycling Helmet and the Laser Z1 do a bit more to channel air flow.

Like the ARO5, the ARO3 comes with Oakley’s eyewear docking system, Boa FS1-1 dial retention system and MIPs.

The ARO3 is expected to retail for $180.

BOTTOM LINE | Oakley Cycling Helmet | ARO7, ARO5 and ARO3

With Oakley entering in the Cycling apparel and Helmet line for 2018, it will be interesting to see how the brand is received.  The helmet prices are inline with many of Oakley’s competitors for top of the line helmets.  I thought Oakley’s logo wasn’t over the top with the helmets, which wasn’t the case for the apparel with a huge O on the front.

I look forward to Oakley sending out some helmets for review. The ARO line should be available for Spring 2018.

This year at Interbike we got to see a very cool helmet called the Limar Ultralight+.  I knew after seeing it I wanted to get a chance to check it out, so we contacted Albabici (http://www.albabici.com/) who is an importer of Italian cycling goodness and rather cool Limar Ultralight+ Proteam Astana was on it’s way.

Limar Ultralight+ Cycling Helmet Side View

Limar History

Limar is an Italian company, with a 30-year-experience in the production of cycle helmets, leading the way with the world’s lightest helmet range. Limar has a strong mission: to be “The Helmet Specialist” by offering the market the widest and best range of helmets in terms of lightness, comfort and fitting.

Limar Ultralight+ Review

Limar dubs the Ultralight+ as “The world’s lightest helmet”…and…well that isn’t exactly true.  For a size large the Ultralight+ comes in at 240 grams, which is light, but the Suomy Timeless size large beats it by 5 grams at 135 grams.

Limar Ultralight+ Cycling Helmet Front View Limar Ultralight+ Cycling Helmet Rear View Limar Ultralight+ Cycling Helmet Side View

What makes the Limar Ultralight+ rather interesting is the bug netting at the front of the helmet.  If you have ever ridden and gotten a bee stuck in your helmet it can BEE rather painful.  I am not quite certain if the netting effects helmet aero dynamics at all, but it is a nice touch.

The buckles on the the helmet are pretty standard and I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.

Adjustability on the helmet is excellent and uses a non BOA ratchet type system in the rear to loosen or tighten the helmet.  I found the overall helmet design works perfectly with my head.  The chin strap is actually two smaller straps with a gap in between to provide additional cooling.  Any excess strap length is housed in a nice velcro padded holder.

Limar Ultralight+ Cycling Helmet Strap

Notice the gap in between the two strap webbings.

Limar Ultralight+ Cycling Helmet Strap Holder

Limar Ultralight+ helmet Chin Strap Holder

A rear safety light was included with the helmet adding a bit more security when ridding at night or in the early morning.

Limar Ultralight+ Cycling Helmet Light

The Limar Ultralight+ rear helmet light is placed over the round ratchet system.  When turned on it has 3 modes including 2 blinking and 1 constant.

One limitation to the Ultralight+ design is there is no eyeglasses port on the front of the helmet.  The front netting covers vents that one might stuff their eyewear arms into.

The Ultralight+ comes with a whopping 22 vents allowing a ton of airflow.

  • Technology: Double shell In-mould – Ultralight technology
  • Air vents: Superior ventilation with 22 air vents
  • Sizing system: Competition+ system with height adjustment
  • Pads: Antibacterial pads
  • Visor: Removable visor included*
  • Design: Slick Fit
  • Bug Net: Yes
  • Retail: $179.00

MyLimar Helmet Customization

For those that want to customize their helmets, Limar offers what the call MyLimar, that gives you the ability to choose from different color combinations, upload your logo and write your own text.

Here are just a few examples

MyLimar Customized Helmets

Bottom Line | Limar Ultralight+ Helmet Review

I really like the Limar Ultralight+.  The fit is exceptional, the look is Italian styling all the way and the price point isn’t out of the park.

The only negative I could find is the fact that you can’t wear your glasses on the front of your helmet.  For me that isn’t a big deal because I don’t usually wear glasses on my helmet, but I know a few cyclist who do, especially in low light conditions.  The helmet could be modified by removing some of the netting on 2 of the vents to allow glasses to fit, but by doing so you may fall prey to BEEs.

For those who want a very light helmet that is stylish and fun, the Limar Ultralight+ is an excellent choice.

Lazer Z1 Cycling Helmet Review 2017 A

Laser Sport History

Founded in 1919 Lazer, or cross SA as it was called back then was active in the motorcycle industry. It all started with Roger Lacroix who made leather articles for motorcycle riders. These items went from gloves to hats. In 1930 Roger made the first rigid leather hat, which was predecessor for the modern helmet. In 1945 the company went commercial and started selling their products on a larger scale. From there on R&D became an important part of the company, which led to a first aluminum helmet in 1948. Innovations rapidly followed each other and over the course of 20 years the helmets evolved from thermoplastic shells to injected full face helmets which passed all safety standards.

Belgium is arguably the most rabid cycling nation in the world. So it’s no surprise that the country that produced Eddy Merckx, the Tour of Flanders and embrocation would also produce some of the best bike helmets. Lazer is the world’s oldest helmet company, having started out making old leather hairnets for Belgian hardmen racing steel bicycles over cobbled farm roads.

Their helmets are the result of over 90 years of experience, passion and dedication.

This attitude has shaped Lazer into one of the most innovating helmet companies in the world.

Currently Lazer designs, manufactures and markets its bicycle- , leisure- ,winter  and eyewear products in more than 50 countries, over 5 continents.

In 1980 the company decided to keep up with the times and changed their name to the now famous ‘Lazer’. The name change was part of an effort to renew and reshape the company to keep up with modern times and technology. During that period laser technology was just starting to surface, and it was the hip new thing with a bright future.  Shortly after the name change, they again started with something that was coming up at that time, and started a bicycle division. Using their motor helmet knowhow they made the best bicycling helmets on the market. It didn’t take long for Lazer to team up with champions like Eddy Merckx and use their input to improve the bicycle helmets.

Over the course of the nineties Lazer expanded their bicycle range and provided many of the greatest cyclists in history with superb helmets. Together with an expanding collection and improving products came international success. The Lazer brand quickly became available throughout Europe.

When new technologies developed and materials evolved Lazer was at the forefront of innovation. They were always among the first to try out new ways of production and materials. This curious attitude towards innovation led to creative products like time trial helmets with build in visors and a new, revolutionary fitting system called Rollsys®.

Together with a growing market for bicycle related products Lazer decided to branch out into new product categories. Staying true to the core business of ‘head protection’ Lazer decided to create a revolutionary eyewear system that was completely complementary to the cycling helmet. Resolving some of the issues traditional eyewear has, the Magneto was born. This was the start of the Lazer vision division and the birth of an entire eyewear collection.

Looking beyond cycling Lazer also ventured into the ski- and snowboard market at the beginning of 2012. And now has a full collection of helmets for winter sports.

Laser Sport is based out of Antwerp, Belgium.

On August 31, 2016 Shimano who had wanted to purchase a cycling helmet company completed the purchase of Laser Sport.

Laser Z1 ARS Advanced Rollsys® Retention System

The Laser Z1 uses Laser’s patented ARS Advanced Rollsys® retention system, which uses a roller at the top of the helmet to adjust tension.  A strap encases the head providing a cushion of air between the helmet and the strap.  We found Z1’s retention mechanism to be one of the best in the industry for both fit and comfort.

Laser ARS Advanced Rollsys® retention system

By turning a thumb wheel, situated on top of the helmet the system permits an accurate and progressive peripheral sizing adjustment. The fit of the helmet will symmetrically be tightened without any pressure points on the head.

Laser Z1 Accessories

The Z1 can be equipped with with several accessories including

  • Rear Helmet LED Light (Z-LED)
  • Aeroshell Z1 snap on Aero shield for aero dynamic performance
  • Cappuccinlock helmet lock
  • LifeBEAM heart rate measurement tool
  • Aquapad headband

We were sent both the Aeroshell Z1 and the Z-LED to try out.  I found the Aeroshell Z1 to be an excellent companion to the Z1 helmet for colder days when you don’t want as much venting and to make the helmet as aero as possible for time trials and cold race days.

The plastic cover aero shield simply snaps on to the helmet for a really secure fit.  The Aero Shield comes in 5 colors and 1 transparent shade including

  • Flash Green
  • Flash Pink
  • Flash Orange
  • Flash Yellow
  • Red White
  • Transparent

Aeroshell Z1 Cycling Helmet Cover

The helmet also comes with a clear plastic rain/dust guard to protect the Rollsys adjustment knob on the top of the helmet.  I sort of like the look of the  guard when it is one the helmet.

We had issue with the Z-LED where we couldn’t get ours to operate even after replacing the batteries, so we were never able to really test it out.   The Z-LED attaches to the rear of the helmet and should be able to turn on and off by pushing a light button.  Nothing too sophisticated.

BOTTOM LINE | LASER Z1 CYCLING HELMET | 2017

The Z1 provides an exceptional fit and based on our reviews of other cycling helmets, the z1 is probably the best fitting helmet we have tried. The ARS Advanced Rollsys® retention system is super easy to use and allows the helmet to fit a wide range of head sizes.  The helmet fits true to size and those who are in-between sizes should be able to get a larger or smaller helmet due to the retention system.

The Laser Z1 cycling helmet is more ventilated than the Rudy Project Racemaster, Oakley’s new Oakley ARO Helmet line and just about any other helmet we have ridden with.  I found that the helmet prices for the Z1 are all over the place online, ranging from $150 – $250.

If you are looking for a great helmet that allows for plenty of ventilation, the Z1 is the best out there right now.  It’s so good you almost feel like your not wearing a helmet.

Welcome to another GearMashers helmet review.  Today we are showcasing the 2017 Rudy Project Racemaster Cycling Helmet.

Rudy Project Racemaster Cycling Helmet Review 2017

For those that don’t know Rudy Project got it start back 1985 when founder and creator Rudy Barbazza launched the Rudy Project brand in Treviso, Italy.  The goal of the company was to improve athlete’s performance by providing the best eyewear available.

Rudy’s motto is “Technically Cool”, which sums up their philosophy about not only creating great products, but also keeping them hip and current.

Rudy Project Logo

Back in the 80’s endurance sports were just picking up steam and sports eyewear was rather limited.  Fast Forward to 2017 and there are numerous eyewear manufactures.  Rudy has been there the whole time evolving their craft and making fantastic improvements to help athletes along the way.

Branching off from their sunglass line, Rudy Project started focusing on cycling helmets and have crushed the competition, earning the prestigious title of “Most Worn Helmet at the IRONMAN® World Championship” for the sixth consecutive year.  Talk about bragging rights, people who go to Kona are some of the most elite level athletes around the world and could wear any manufacturer’s helmet, yet they have chosen Rudy Project.  That says a lot about their trust in Rudy.

RUDY PROJECT RACEMASTER CYCLING HELMET REVIEW | 2017

With the launch of GearMashers this year, I knew we wanted to review Rudy Project’s fantastic line of eyewear and helmets.  Being both a Triathlete and a Road Cyclist, I figured a good start would be to test out Rudy’s Racemaster helmet line.

Contacting Rudy Project’s director of Public Relations, Simone Cordery-Cotter was amazing.  She actually responds to emails, unlike many other companies I have tried to contact.  If Simone is any indication of the quality of people who work for Rudy Project, well then that’s pretty impressive.  Huge thumbs up for Simone and her communication skills.  Quality all the way!

RUDY PROJECT’S RACEMASTER PACKAGE ARRIVES

The Racemaster is Rudy’s answer to a pure road cycling helmet.  Great lines, great ventilation and amazing fit.  While certainly not as aero as Rudy’s Wing 57 or Boost 01 helmets, the Racemaster is definitely more aero than many in it’s category.

A box arrives with some Rudy Project goodies

We were sent the Rudy Project Racemaster helmet and Tralyx eyewear.

The Racemaster comes with a nice microfiber helmet bag, extra helmet padding without netting (Free Pad) , a visor extension, an Emergency identification and notification system tag (ICEDOT) and helmet instructions.

Side profile of the Racemaster.  Notice the large vents on the sides and top.

One really cool feature of the Racemaster is a port for cycling sunglasses, which Rudy calls the Garage Eyewear Dock.  Rather than trying to stick the glasses in a vent, the helmet was designed to hold sunglass in the rear of the helmet.  When using it, the glasses seemed very secure and out of the way, yet still looked ultra cool.

Rear view of the helmet.  I really like the faring on the back, it gives the helmet a really nice look.  The vents are large allowing heat to disperse out the rear.

The helmet comes with combo pad and bug netting setup.  Swapping out the netting (Bug Stop) for the normal padding (Free Pad) is super easy, because the netted padding is one piece.  The non-netted padding comes in 5 pieces.

The Racemaster retention system is adjusted by turning the dial clockwise or counterclockwise.  As the tension is tightened, a plastic strap pulls in closer to the head. The plastic strap doesn’t go all the way around the head, but covers about 85%.

The plastic strap can also be adjusted higher or lower on the head by moving the dial mechanism up or down.

Plastic buckles are used to secure the helmet under the chin.

Thin webbing is used for fastening the helmet.

The webbing has a grey strip of reflective material to help illuminate the helmet at night.

RUDY PROJECT RACEMASTER CYCLING HELMET OVERVIEW

The Rudy Project Racemaster feels a bit heavier than the Suomy Timeless helmet we reviewed recently, yet feels much more substantial.  The quality of the helmet just oozes out.  Our helmet came in size Large and weighed 339 grams or 11.95 ounces, which is definitely heavier than others in the same category.  That said, once the helmet is on you really don’t feel any difference in weight.

Putting on the helmet was liking putting on your most comfortable jeans or shoes.  It just felt right from the beginning.  Rudy Project goes out of their way to make sure helmets not only function as they should, but are keen on fit quality, so it should come as no surprise that the fit is outstanding.

The helmet comes with 6 main adjustment points.  The 2 main ones are the Head Band Dial and the Dial Height Adjustment.  Once these are set, the other 4 pertain to the helmet’s 2 Divider Pro webbing buckles and the 2 Fastener Buckles.  Once everything is setup the way you like it, realistically the only adjustment that will be made is tightening and untightening the Band Dial and fastening and unfastening the Fastener buckle.

Here in Austin the summers can be wicked hot, so having helmets that have a lot of Ventilation is key.  So far we have tested the helmet in 100 degree heat and we didn’t pass out.  The helmet does run slightly warmer than the Laser Z1 we are testing, but not significantly so.

We were sent the Racemaster White Stealth Matte and it absolutely helps reflect the suns rays.  The Suomy Timeless helmet, which is silver, can get hot to the touch, while our Racemaster White Stealth Matte stays cool.  That to me speaks volumes for having white or light colored helmets during summer months.

The Bug netting is a rather cool idea and looks interesting, but in areas where we cycle, there aren’t too many bugs, so we couldn’t really tell if it would help or not.  Currently the helmet is setup with the non-netting pads for a slightly cooler experience temperature wise.

I found the Large helmet to fit true to size, but not much room for those who are butting up against being xtra large.  If you are one of those people who are on the fence, it’s probably a good idea to size up.

Rudy is working in conjunction with ICEDOT (http://icedot.org) to provide a safety feature should a crash occur while cycling.  It’s another safety feature not found on all cycling helmets and is a great idea, especially for those with special needs should and accident occur.

RUDY PROJECT RACEMASTER CYCLING HELMET VERDICT

Everyone who we come across who own Rudy Project helmets loves them, so it should come as no surprise that we also love the Racemaster.  It’s a fantastic helmet that looks great both on an off.  The performance is superb and fit is outstanding.

The price point of the Racemaster is definitely a sticking point.  With a retail price of $349.99, it will certainly scare off the budget conscious for less costly helmets.  For those who want top of the line quality however, they simply aren’t going to find a better helmet.  Rudy Project did their homework to make something that is attractive, useful and performs at the top of it’s game.

This past month we were sent the 2017 Suomy Timeless Cycling Helmet for review.  Suomy cycling helmets are new to the US and the Suomy Timeless Cycling Helmet is part of their Fast Road line of helmets.  We were excited to get our first look at the Suomy helmet line and give them a go.

Suomy Timeless Road Cycling Helmet Review

SUOMY HISTORY

Suomy is an Italian and family run business.  Having long worked in Yamaha, Umberto Monti, founder of Suomy, decided to become entrepreneur and start a helmet company.  The Suomy company founding involved Umberto and two other brothers, Walter, a former motocross rider and Maurizio, a nuclear engineer.  Together the 3 formed the Suomy brand.

UNBOXING THE SUOMY TIMELESS CYCLING HELMET

The Suomy Timeless cycling helmet arrives at our doorsteps.

Inside the box contain a silver Suomy Timeless Road Cycling helmet, what Suomy refers to as their Fast Helmets line of road cycling helmets.  Suomy top of road helmets are found in their Road Racing line called the Gun Wind.

Suomy Timeless Road Cycling Helmet Review Front

The helmet contains lots of venting for air flow, in fact there are a total of 35 ventilation holes to allow both air in and out.

Suomy Timeless Road Cycling Helmet Review 2

It’s hard to see, but one noticeable difference that was immediately apparent is the helmet webbing thickness.  The Timeless strap’s webbing is much thinner than many helmets we have used.  The thinner straps obviously reduce weight and add a bit more to comfort.

Suomy Timeless Strap

The Timeless helmets can be adjusted in 4 areas.  3 adjustments can be made on the straps themselves (2 on the right side and 1 on the left).

Suomy Timeless Road Cycling Helmet Review Rearview

Beyond typical helmet strap adjustments, the helmets main adjustment mechanism is in the rear.  Once the straps are adjusted for fit, the rear adjustment knob is all you will be messing with.

We did find that the helmet runs a bit on the small side.  We received a Large, which did fit my big noggin, but if my head was a bit bigger, I would have definitely needed an Extra Large.  I would advise going to a bigger size if you have doubts.

Suomy Timeless Road Cycling Helmet Review Rear View

The helmet sits high on the head and feels very secure.

Suomy Timeless Road Cycling Helmet Review Side Profile

Here we have a side view of the helmet.  Notice there is a lot of room above the ear for glasses and air flow.  Some helmets can be really annoying because they sit too low, however this isn’t the case with the Suomy.

BOTTOM LINE

After taking out the Suomy Timeless Cycling Hemet on various rides I can confirm that the helmet is really good.  I was a bit surprised, but it seems Suomy did their homework in designing a great cycling helmet under $100.

What I really like about the helmet is the airflow and how it sits higher on your head above the ears.  Some helmets sit so low that they mess with your cycling glasses and this certainly isn’t the case with the Timeless.  The airflow through the helmet is excellent and I have zero issues.

I really can’t say anything negative about the helmet or how it works.  For under a $100 it is an excellent value, so if you’re in the market for a great helmet at a great price, you can not go wrong with the Suomy Timeless.
