A few weeks ago YETI sent us out some of their Crossroads collection including the YETI Crossroads Backpack and YETI Crossroads Tote Bag.

YETI Crossroads Backpack and YETI Crossroads Tote Bag
YETI Crossroads Backpack and YETI CrossRoads Tote Bag

For those that don’t know, YETI makes more than just Ramblers and Coolers, they also have been actively getting into the travel space with their waterproof PANGA line of backpacks and travel bags and now the Crossroads line of backpacks and bags.

REVIEW

While most of YETI’s products are made for rugged adventures, the Crossroads line is a bit more tame with a focus on comfort and geared towards an urban environment.

YETI Crossroads Backpack 23 Review

The YETI Crossroads backpack is the perfect complement to those wishing to make day trips or short business travels. The backpack can house a 15.5-inch laptop and still have room for an iPad, wallet, keys and a few cloths or other misc items. The backpack also has room for 2 full-sized water bottles, one on each side.

The “23” stands for 23 liters of capacity and consists of the measurements 18″ by 12.5″ by 7″.

The retail price will hit you in the wallet for $200, which is pretty comparable for backpacks of similar quality.

Two of my favorite features of the backpack are a hidden pocket in the rear and a front 2-pocket zippered pouch. The hidden pocket is great for storing things like a passport or cash. The front pocket is super convenient and is a great place to store your wallet, keys and a phone.

YETI Crossroads Backpack 23 Main zippered compartment
YETI Crossroads Backpack 23 Main zippered compartment

The main compartment of the backpack has ample room for an iPad and 2 days worth of clothes or other misc stuff. It comes with an open pocket, 1 closed zippered pocket and 1 mesh pocket.

YETI Crossroads Backpack 23 with a 15.5 Laptop Section
YETI Crossroads Backpack 23 with a 15.5 Laptop Section

The Backpack can house a 15.5-inch laptop in the rear pocket as well as an iPad. I preferred to use a 13-inch computer because the 15.5-inch computer seemed a bit big and heavy for the bag. Carrying an iPad, I had zero issues and the Backpack felt much lighter.

The backpack has nice padded shoulder straps that cinch at the bottom. There is also an adjustable chest strap should you require a more secure fit.

Not Waterproof

Where the Crossroads Backpack 23 falters a bit is its inability to handle the elements such as rain or sleet. While the backpack’s material provides ample protection during nice sunny days, it will not stand up to heavy rains and downpours. The materials and zippers are not waterproof, so you will need to be cautious if you know it might storm.

YETI Crossroads Tote Bag 16 Review

The Yeti Crossroads Tote Bag is perfect for a day at the beach or a quick outing to your favorite outdoor event. My wife Kathleen loves to use it to carry her teacher essentials including a 13-inch laptop, various pens, a few books, car keys, wallet, and phone.

The “16” stands for 16 liters of capacity and consists of the measurements 13″ by 19″ by 6.25″.

YETI Crossroads Tote Bag Dimensions

The retail price is $180, which is on the higher end for Tote Bags of similar quality. You have a choice of 3 colors including

  • Black
  • Charcoal
  • Slate blue.

What my wife and I really like about the Crossroads Tote is it is the ideal bag to bring with you to and an outdoor music event like Blues On The Greens that we have here in Austin. In Kathleen’s case, she also loves to use it to take school essentials to work.

The Tote Bag is designed to carry 15″ laptops or smaller computers or electronic devices. I recommend a 13″ laptop or smaller. It also can carry an iPad with ease.

Like the Crossroads Backpack, the Crossroads Tote Bag isn’t waterproof, so if it is raining or there is a potential for rain, I would advise using a different bag.

Yeti Crossroads Tote Bag Inner Pockets

The Crossroads Tote comes with an assortment of inner pockets for all your misc items.

Yeti Crossroads Tote Bag water bottle

There is even a holder for a water bottle.

Bottom Line

I really like where YETI is going. The Crossroads collection is very useful for city dwellers and those who are looking to take short ventures into the outdoors.

With a 3 year warranty on the YETI Tote and Backpack, it should give you confidence that the company stands behind their products.

If YETI could come out with a waterproof version using the same designs I think that would be perfect.

Check out the YETI Crossroads Collection on YETI’s Website and let us know what YOU think.

In 2018 Peak Design hit it out of the park with their Peak Design Travel Backpack. The company launched it using another successful Peak Design Kickstarter and had 13,752 backers pledge and raised $5,206,611 to help bring the Travel Backpack project to life.

Peak Design Travel Backpack (Black and Sage Green)

This year I received a heads up email from Peak Design about another Kickstarter project they were working on, namely the Peak Design Travel Tripod. The perfect companion to the Travel Backpack.

Anyway, since the company contacted me about the Travel Tripod, I sent a request to see if I could get my hands on the Travel Backpack 45L, and 2 weeks later a package arrived.

Full disclosure, I also received another package containing the Everyday Backpack 35L, which is specifically geared towards photographers.

Unboxing

Peak Design Travel Backpack

The Travel Backpack arrived in your typical mailing Box with your typical stuffing. Nothing too special, but it also included a Peak Design Packing Cube and Camera Cube (Size Small). Both are extra items for use with the Backpack and great traveling options to combine with the Travel Backpack should you need them.

REVIEW

Travel Backpack Review

When quickly inspecting the backpack, I was really surprised how nice it was. I really like the Sage Green color scheme and all the attention to detail.

PROS

  • Cool Sage Green Color Scheme
  • 45 Liters | Lots of Space
  • Hidden waist belt
  • Lots of handels

CONS

  • Only 2 color options
  • Price
  • No Front pocket

Color Selection

For those that like a “black on black” color scheme, you will not be disappointed. Of course, I tend to like a bit of color, so I opted for the Sage Green, which in the pictures looks very similar to the ash color on the Everyday Backpack, Everyday Sling.

Materials

The backpacks are designed using both 400D and 900D nylon canvas. It’s pretty heavy-duty stuff and seems plenty abrasion-resistant. In fact, I have yet to have any issues with any of my other bags and backpacks that use the same material.

Most of the backpack is covered in 400D nylon canvas with the bottom using 900D for extra protection. The 900D is especially good at protecting the bottom of the backpack from knocks and dings. It has a rubberized feel to it.

The backpack comes with an assortment of zippers from YKK and Zoom, who are leaders in the Zipper world. The polyurethane liner is DWR coated to add a bit of weatherproofing. Aluminum hardware and an abundance of webbing round out the materials.

Commuter or Travel Backpack?

Like the name suggests, the Peak Design Travel Backpack is built and designed for travel. This means it wouldn’t be my first choice for a day pack or commuter.

While it certainly could be used as a commuter, the functionality of it just doesn’t lend itself well for that purpose. The backpack is 45 litters and a bit on the heavy side. Going with something like the Everyday Backpack or Everyday Sling makes much more sense.

For travel, it makes perfect sense, especially those traveling abroad who may want to make use of its backpack capabilities. The PD Travel comes with backpack straps and a hidden waist belt for carrying heavier loads.

Pockets and Laptop Sleeve

The backpack comes with numerous pockets, including 3 hidden pockets and a 15-inch laptop sleeve. The hidden pockets are great for things like passports, wallets and other essential items.

For me, the most useful pockets are located in the front of the backpack with plenty of room for all your misc stuff.

2 water bottle pockets are located on the bag, 1 on each side with room to carry at least a 16 oz bottle.

Peak Design Travel Backpack Storage System

One of the beauties of the Travel Backpack is all the storage options. What makes the Travel Backpack different from most travel bags are the various pouches and accessories you can add to it.

For those who want to travel with their camera gear, the ability to mix and match pouches, camera cubes and packing cubes really helps organize the backpack for travel.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Does The Travel Backpack Fit Under The Front Seat On Flights?

Nope. It is designed to fit in the overhead and not under the seat.

Can The Backpack Carry A Tripod? Does it have a tripod holder?

You can carry a tripod either strapped down on the front or in one of the side pockets. Peak Design has a Travel Tripod that they just came out with.

Can You Carry The Travel Backpack On An Airplane Fully Expanded?

YES! Although you will have to place it in the overhead compartment.

Does The Backpack Come With Any Camera Cubes or Packing Cubes?

No, you have to purchase those separately.

Bottom Line

Bottom Line

If you are a Peak Design owner, you know the quality of their products and the Peak Design Travel Backpack doesn’t disappoint. It certainly is not for everyone, but it does fit nicely into the travel category for photographers and those who want to organize their backpacks for travel.

At 45L it seems a bit too big for commuting with and a bit too small for long vacations, but for those who will travel with a check-on bag, the Travel Backpack will be a nice complement.

For 2019 Timbuk2 launched the all-new Especial 2.0 line of backpacks and bags to coincide with their 30th Anniversary. These new backpacks and bags are geared towards commuters and keeping laptops and other electronics safe from the elements.

We reached out to Timbuk2 and received the Especial Scope and Especial Shelter Roll Top Backpack for review, so those are the ones we have included today.

Timbuk2 Especial Scope, Messenger and Shelter Roll Top Backpacks

The Wetter The Better

Computers despise water. Timbuk2 has done everything possible to keep water away from a user’s laptop compartment by adding Waterproof fabrics, taped seams, and waterproof zippers. Downpour or steady drizzle, Especial bags and backpacks are designed to stay dry to the core.

No Wet Laptops

The Especial 2.0 Collection motto is “No Wet Laptops” and is built around the fact that rain, sleet, and snow will occur at some point during your outdoor adventures and commutes. During these times, the line is designed to protect your electronics from the elements, keeping them dry to the bone.

The Timbuk2 Especial 2.0 line includes

  • Scope Backpack (24L to 36L)
  • The Shelter Roll-Top
  • Stash Messenger
REVIEW

The Timbuk2 Scope Especial 2.0 Backpack Review

PROS

  • Hi Vis Green Liners
  • Clean Looks and Lines
  • Quality Zippers
  • Weather Resistant
  • Waterproof Computer Pocket

CONS

  • No Waist Belt
  • No Compression Straps When Expanded
  • Small Opening for large Pocket

The Timbuk2 Scope backpack is designed for those business minded commuters who want a sophisticated look. The backpack has a neat streamlined appearance without a bunch of webbing dangling about.

Timbuk2 Scope is an update to the Especial Medio backpack bringing an improved squared shape design to help distribute weight. Velcro has been replaced with zippered pockets for less noise when opening. It has a capacity of 24L to 36L (using the expandable zippered gusset).

Internal Laptop Waterproof Pocket

In staying true to Timbuk2’s no wet laptops motto for the Especial 2.0 line, the Core comes equipped with an internal seam-taped 15″ laptop pocket. The engineers incorporated a water repellent zipper and protective lip to help keep the elements out.

Timbuk2 Scope Backpack Loadout

Timbuk2 Scope Backpack Back View

The Scope comes with 2 main top-loading compartments, 2 side-loading compartments, and an expandable zipped section to hold even more (going from 24L to 36L). While the expandable section is nice, there is no way to compress it once expanded. It would have been helpful to have some compression straps on the upper part of the backpack.

The backpack comes with lime green high vis inner liners to help improve visibly when searching for items. It may seem a bit gimmicky, but it really works.

Timbuk2 Scope Backpack Showing Top Load Features
Timbuk2 Scope Backpack Showing Top Load Features

The backpack includes 2 side compression straps that work in conjunction with the water bottle pockets. I could easily see them being used to carrying tripods like the upcoming Peak Design Travel Tripod for those photographers out there.

Overall Impression

While the pocket layout is good, something seems a bit off for me. For one the large pocket only partially zips open, so you don’t have quick access to items on the bottom. When expanding the backpack, there isn’t any way to compress what’s inside. There are no compression straps.

When walking around town with a heavy load I found myself constantly adjusting the shoulder strap webbing because it would occasionally come loose. The buckle locking mechanism just didn’t seem to hold the webbing in place. I didn’t experience this issue when carrying a lighter load.

I would have liked to see a rear hideaway pocket on the back of the pack to hold items like a phone or wallet, similar to what the Timbuk2 Especial Tres Backpack has.

If you aren’t expecting bad weather, I found it easier to carry and access a 15″ computer in the large pocket rather than the waterproof pocket.

Overall I like the Timbuk2 Scope Backpack and certainly would use it for daily commuting.

Technical Highlights

Technical Highlights | Timbuk2 Scope Backpack

Here is a list of most of the technical highlights the Timbuk2 Scope Backpack has.

  • Waterproof 15″ laptop compartment
  • Reflective hits
  • Volume 24L – 36L
  • Magnetic compression straps for sleek & durable contraction or expansion
  • Dual side stretch pockets fit water bottles or U-lock
  • Retail $189
  • Internal Organization
  • Water Bottle Pocket
  • Water Resistant
  • Expandable
  • Extra Reflective
REVIEW

Timbuk2 Shelter Roll-Top Review

PROS

  • Large Pocket
  • Weather Resistant

CONS

  • No Waist Belt
  • Limited Pockets
  • No Backpack Frame

The Timbuk2 Shelter Roll-Top Backpack is specifically designed for those who commute by bike. In essence, it is one large stuff sack with shoulder straps and a couple of pockets for misc items.

Roll Top backpacks, in general, are designed to be overly stuffed at some point with clothes, shoes and an assortment of other items. They are your workhorse for getting your gear from one location to another without a lot of hassle.

Timbuk2 Shelter Roll-Top | Front

The front of the backpack contains a single weather-resistant pocket, but it just seems a little too open with no dividers to keep things organized.

There is no padding so, if you plan on carrying electronics in there, make sure you don’t smack the pocket when putting the backpack on the ground.

Timbuk2 Shelter Roll-Top | Large Bucket Like Pocket

If you have a lot of gear and you don’t mind mixing it up in one pocket, you will love the large easy access pocket.

The roll-top uses magnetic buckles to keep everything secure. While I found the buckles cool, I didn’t feel the combo of the straps and buckles allowed for a really tight roll.

I would have liked to see a higher visibility color used rather than grey. It works, but it really isn’t that inspiring and makes the backpack seem a bit boring.

Timbuk2 Shelter Roll-Top | Rear

The rear of the pack is pretty much identical to the Timbuk2 Scope. Considering the roll-top can carry more, I would have moved the shoulder straps a little further over to help disperse heavy loads.

Overall Impression

While I absolutely love the Especial Tres Backpack, another rolltop by Timbuk2, the Shelter seems to have missed the mark. While the Especial Tres can be used as a commuter, it also is great for travel.

To me, the Shelter is too minimal with its large bucket-like pocket and 1 meshed and 1 zippered pocket. Unlike the Scope Backpack, it doesn’t have a rigid frame that keeps the bag from looking floppy.

Q & A

Which TimBuk2 Backpack Do You Prefer

Actually, at first I wasn’t too excited about the Timbuk2 Scope, but now that I have gotten to use it I really think it is a great backpack.

Early Spring here in Austin is always a welcome season.  The temperatures are just about perfect, with humidity and hot dry summer temperatures still a month or 2 away. This is usually the time my SPOT single speed calls out to me to hit the trails and get out there for fun rides.

For those that commute, holding all your necessities can sometimes be problematic.  This year we have had the opportunity to test out various bags, backpacks and other things a cycling commuter might want.  One such item was a rear seat post rack bag called the Arkel TailRider Trunk Bag.  It’s the perfect companion to the Arkel Randonneur Seat Post Rack.  It provides ample room for 2 locks and other misc items.

Arkel-TailRider-Trunk-Bag-Review-Cycling-Bag-1

The Arkel has performed flawlessly over this last year without any issues.  The Zippers still zip and the bag basically looks brand new.

Arkel Tailrider Overview

We have tested the TailRider in both dry and wet conditions.  When we talk wet, we are talking tropical storm rain where the sky opens up and unleashes huge volumes of water.  The integrated rain cover is key during these times, keeping everything nice and dry, well except the rider and his shoes.  The picture below was me after my Friday Bomb Run.  The entire run was dry, but wicked humid and then when I started biking home, the sky opened up.  It was like I was a kid again, having fun riding in a massive downpour.

While the bag is rated to resist rain for a few hours, the integrated rain cover is perfect for longer rides in soggy conditions.  For those that have cell phones without waterproof cases, having a dry place to store them while cycling is essential.  From our testing the TailRider can really put your mind at ease, knowing the phones will be safe and dry, regardless of what nature throws at you.

Tom-Crandall-Arkel-TailRider-Bag-Test-Rain-1
Arkel-TailRider-Bag-Test-Rain-21

Arkel’s TailRider design is sleek, uncluttered and aerodynamic.  It starts off around 6.5 inches and tapers down to about 3.5 inches.  If you’re into shoe boxes, this isn’t your bag, but for those who like clean lines and an aero look, you will not find anything better.

The TailRider uses 4 Velcro straps to attach the bag to a rack.  The bag requires at least 16.5 inches of rack space and the spacing between the straps is roughly 7.5 inches.  Each Velcro strap on has reflective strips that are useful at night making your bike a little more visible from the side.

Arkel-TailRider-Shoulder-Straps-D-Rings

The bag has plenty of compartments including 2 side storage areas with zippers, a main compartment that can be broken down into 2 sections using an Internal divider and 4 internal packets.  Additionally the bag has a top area that can store other items like a jacket or shirt using the synch straps.  I found this especially useful when cycling back from running.  I would always bring and extra shirt with me for after the run and store my sweaty shirt on top of the bag as I rode home.

The TailRider also comes with a expansion bellow for those that simply can’t leave items behind.  The bag essentially expands sideways, offering room for those who love to over stuff.  Our bag most often would house 2 heavy duty chain locks and both the bag and rack had no problems storing/carrying both.

Lastly the TailRider comes with 2 D-rings for shoulder straps.  This makes carrying the bag a little easier.

Bottom Line

Bottom Line

Verdict – We love the TailRider.  It simply is a fantastic commuter bag and is the best we have tested.  Again its design is sleek, uncluttered and aerodynamic and shows Arkel did their homework in designing a bag that stands out.

The folks at Craft Cadence (https://craftcadence.com/) recently reached out to us to get our thoughts on their Craft Cadence Cycling Backpack.

The backpack is designed with the cycling commuter in mind and is rated IPX-5 to withstand most rain, sleet and snow showers that a commuter might encounter.

Unboxing

Craft Cadence Cycling Backpack Unboxing

The Cadence backpack came by way of London England, not too shabby. Craft Cadence is still a very new company being founded in 2016.

We received version 2.0 of the Cadence Cycling Backpack. Craft Cadence incorporated updates to the backpack based on testing and feedback from their customers.

The Craft Cadence Backpack was wrapped in plastic and showed an IPX5 Waterproof rating
Our Craft Backpack came in a yellow/black combo. The other backpack option was all black.
REVIEW

Craft Cadence Cycling Backpack Review

Currently Craft Cadence offers to color options for their cycling backpack including an all black and a yellow/black combo.

We opted for the Yellow/black combo for testing feeling it would be a better choice for visibility during day rides.

Craft Cadence Backpack Dimensions

The backpack, when fully extended measures 60 cm (height) x 43 cm (width) x 19 cm (depth) and it’s capacity when full is 30 Liters (or 30 litres for your Brits out there).

The older (Version 1 Craft Cadence Backpack) had dimensions at the top of the bag go from 48 cm to 23 cm on the bottom. The new bag is now 43 cm at the op to 25 cm on the bottom. Both the new and old backpacks maintain the 30-liter volume.

In testing other backpacks like the Timbuk2 Especial and Missing Workshop Vandal, I find 30 Liters to be a reasonably sized backpack for commuting. It’s one of those things that isn’t too big or too small and just feels right.

Craft Cadence Backpack Rolltop Closure System

The Craft Cadence backpack is a roll-top backpack, which happens to be my preferred method for closing commuting packs. The rolltop is secured using two velcro strips and locked in place using two straps.

I did find the velcro to be a bit too thin to be secure by itself and felt it could be beefed up and wider. When comparing the velcro to other rolltop backpacks I have used, it seemed a bit inadequate for the job. That said Craft Cadence includes 2 additional straps to secure the rolltop and when used makes it super secure.

Below the rolltop is an outside pocket that can store small accessories such as a phone, keys and a wallet.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The outside pocket is not IPX5, so if it is raining a lot, you will want to store your electronics and other items that may be damaged if wet in the internal bag.

While other backpacks like the Ortlieb Velocity look similar to the Craft Cadence, they lack the outside pocket, which is nice additon to have.

Craft Cadence Backpack Storage

The backpack comes with a removable inner section that is attached by velcro along the top edges. The inner section is divided into 3 sections or pockets.

  • Laptop Pocket: The padded laptop pocket allows room for a 15 inch or smaller laptop.
  • Main Compartment: The main compartment is useful for carrying clothes and misc bulkier items.
  • Zippered Pocket: The Zippered pocket is large enough to carry an iPad, tablet or notebook type device.

If needed, you can fit water bottles on either side of the removable lining. For those that just want a big area to store things, you can remove the inner divider.

I would have liked to see an additional smaller pocket on the outside of the padded portion for storing smaller devices like a phone or keys. The mesh zipper pocket while good for large items, seems a bit big for phones and small items.

Craft Cadence Backpack Shoulder Straps

Craft Cadence backpack straps and harness

The backpack comes with a pretty standard shoulder harness setup. It has two retention webbing straps (sternum & waist) that can be tightened or loosened at the buckle. The sternum strap fits firmly over the chest and can be adjusted up or down based on preference. The 2nd hip belt strap fits above the waist to help make the backpack more secure when traveling.

To help keep the backpack cooler when wearing, the designers included mesh padded shoulder straps which have air vents to maximize air flow and reduce buildup of moisture. The pads also stick out from the pack providing a vertical channel to help air circulate.

Each shoulder harness has 2 reflective webbing loops, perfect for attaching lights or possibly GoPro accessories.

When carrying the backpack, you have several options. You can carry it by the shoulder strap, wear it like a traditional backpack or carry it using with the carrying handle.

Overall the setup felt good.

At last year’s 2018 Interbike I got a chance to check out Green Guru Gear (https://www.greengurugear.com), a company that is totally into upcycling.  They convert waste that would otherwise end up in landfills, such as old bike tubes, used wetsuits, billboards, climbing ropes, and other materials into cool cycling products.

By keeping these materials out of landfills, the folks at Green Guru Gear help save the environment one bag at a time.

Green Guru Gear History

The company was founded in 2005 and currently is located in a small warehouse in Boulder Colorado.  Most of the recycled materials are shipped to the warehouse to be sorted through and ideally transformed into something really cool.

Where Do Green Guru Gear Get Their Materials From?

In general Green Guru Gear obtain materials mostly from “recycling stations.”   Think of your local bike store or outdoor shop where they have recycled areas for customers to drop off used merchandise.  Green Guru is working with companies like REI and bike shops to get used bike tubes.  They work with organizations like Outward Bound to obtain old climbing ropes for bracelets and zipper pulls. Patagonia and Sea World provide the company with used wetsuits where they can be transformed into laptop sleeves and beverage Koozies.

Green Guru Gear Hipster Hip Pack

At Interbike we were able to obtain the Green Guru Gear Hipster Hip Pack, which is commonly known as the dreaded FANNY PACK.  YES they are coming back in style and who were we to complain.  I mean fanny packs are extremely useful and we aren’t ashamed at wearing them.  Heck, I was a fanny packer probably before many of you were born and I will be a fanny packer until the very end.  Green Guru adds the Hipster twist to the name, but we all know it’s a fanny pack.

What makes these packs a little different from traditional fanny packs is they are designed not only to fit around the waist, but to also attach to bike handlebars.  The color combos Green Guru uses are fun and energetic.

The Hipster Hip Packs are built in Colorado from upcycled industrial tent fabrics, climbing ropes and durable materials.   They are water resistant and designed to last.

Green Guru Gear Hipster Hip Pack Review

We absolutely love the upcycle concept of the Hipster Hip Pack and the Green Guru Gear company.  The 2 velcro straps make attaching and removing the Hipster from handlebars a snap.  The dual pocket helps organize hipster essentials.  I would have used the Hipster during Interbike if I had found the Green Guru booth sooner.  It would have been perfect to hold business cards and keys.

I did find the belt a little too big for my wife’s waist.  I think we will end up cutting some of the webbing so that it will fit better and then sew it back.  That should do the trick.

Other that the fit issue, the bag is awesome.

Check out Green Guru Gear (https://www.greengurugear.com) for other cool upcycled products including backpacks, panniers, cycling accessories and more.

Recently I attended The Running Event held in Austin and got a chance to check out UltrAspire, a company that makes really cool race vests, hydration systems and accessories.

REVIEW
UltrAspire Logo

After the TRE expo I was sent a new, still being tested, 2019 UltrAspire vest called the Bryce XT.  It’s a 15L race pack.  It’s a beast of a vest and has all the bells and whistles one could hope for, including loads of pockets, a killer retention system and even a safety whistle, which makes it pretty stellar for longer races and training activities.

Race vests are usually designed based on distance and what an athlete might need for the duration of the event.  Most of UltrAspire race vests are geared towards the ultra marathoner and people who train for long distance adventure races.

While certainly designed for running, race vests often make killer mounting biking and hiking day packs.  They often come equipped with enough pockets and storage areas for your favorite energy snacks and training fluids, plus they usually have room to carrying light weight cloths and jackets should weather conditions change.

Technical Highlights

UltrAspire Bryce XT Technical Highlights

The UltrAspire Bryce XT is packed full of really innovative features including

  • Sweat Proof Webbing
  • Silicone and PU coded fabrics
  • Plush Feeling Micro-fiber Edges
  • Zig zagged Stitching
  • Magnon Pockets
  • Safety stitched bar tack
  • Breathable fabric
  • Bounce Free Zipper pulls
  • Quick Bladder attachments
  • Bungee cord retention system
UltrAspire Technology

UltrAspire Bryce XT 15L Overview

The Bryce XT is a 15L race vest designed for longer racing and/or training.  It comes fully equipped with 11 pockets of various sizes.

On the right shoulder strap there are 3 pockets including a small pocket that uses their Magnon (Magnetic pocket) tech, a quick access mesh pocket and a larger zipper pocket.

I found the mesh pocket super useful to hold trash items like used Gu packets.  I did notice that if I put the unused Gu gels in the larger zipper pocket they bounced around, so I moved them to the left shoulder mesh pocket and no more bounce.  The smaller Magnon pocket would be useful for holding salt tablets.

On the left shoulder strap there are 3 pockets including 2 zippered pockets and a Magnon mesh pocket.

The left mesh pocket was my goto pocket for holding energy gels.  I tried putting a few in the zippered pocket, but like the right zipped pocket, they bounce around a bit, so I moved them to the mesh pocket.

The upper zippered mesh pocket is also perfect for holding gel packs.

The inside back portion of the vest includes an open pocket for use with a water bladder.  The pocket is also lined with a heat shield material which helps keep the liquid cooler or warmer depending on use.

At present I haven’t tested the pack with a water bladder, since I don’t own one, but it looks wide enough to hold most bladders.

The back of the pack contains 4 pockets including a top zippered pocket, a large mesh retention pocket, a large zippered pocket and an internal zippered pocket.

Both the main pocket and mesh retention pocket are great for storing a light jacket, hat and misc stuff you might want to bring.  When I trained and raced Leadville having a place to stuff your layers was key to being well prepared.

One thing I wasn’t quite certain on was how to utilize rear mesh pocket’s bungee system.  There is a retention strap that looks like it might hold nordic poles, but it wouldn’t really work for the ones I have.

UltrAspire Bryce XT 15L Fit

I found the Bryce XT to fit extremely well.  UltrAspire utilizes Universal sizing (One size fits all) on the Bryce XT rather than Small, Medium, and Large.  Obviously people on the very large side or very small side may have issue, but for most, the Bryce will fit and and feel quite comfortable once the straps are adjusted to size.

The race pack comes with a 4 point adjustable retention system allowing a lot of customization for fit.  It comes with 2 bungee straps that go across the front and can be adjusted by tightening or loosing the bungee strap locking mechanism.  It also has a lower webbing strap that can be adjusted making for a great fit.

Cranking down on the bungee straps allowed for a super tight fit without feeling overly tight.

While I didn’t test the pack utilizing a water bladder, I felt like I could run in the Bryce all day long without issue.  Super comfortable.

The Bryce retention system just works and is super easy to adjust on the fly.  Excess bungee can be stuffed into open storage areas so that the ends don’t flap.

Another super cool feature of the XT pertains to the zipper pulls.  They don’t flap around and are easy to grab and use.  I do wonder about the longevity of the pulls, since they are plastic.  I also wonder how the heck you can replace them, should one break.

UltrAspire Bryce XT Materials

The UltrAspire Bryce XT is designed with ripstop type grid patterning to help prevent any ripping or tearing.

The Bryce XT also comes with a load of safety stitching on all stress points, giving you a lot of confidence that the pack will hold up over time and use.

Mesh material is used throughout the race vest for breathability and to help pull moisture away from the body.

Bottom Line

If you are looking to carry gear, nutrition and liquid on your next outdoor adventure, check out UltrAspire (https://ultraspire.com/) and the Bryce XT 15L.  You will not be disappointed.

The Bryce XT 15L will be available in 2019.

Unboxing

Ben over at Purpleorangepr.com got the Velomacchi Speedway backpack to us in quick fashion.  To say we were impressed, doesn’t do the backpack justice.  It’s such a professional looking piece of equipment.

The backpack came in an unassuming grey plastic mailing envelope without any fan fair.  Opening up the package revealed the Velomacchi Speedway Roll-Top 40L Backpack along with a brochure.

REVIEW

Velomacchi Speedway Backpack Review

Velomacchi is located in Hood River, Oregon right near the Columbia river and the Oregon/Washington state line.

Back in 2014 a Kickstarter campaign was launched for Syren Industrial Design & MFG. Co. and what appears to be the start of the Velomacchi product lineup.  The Kickstarter was unsuccessful, but Velomacchi continued on and now looks to be one of the top manufacturers of high quality motorcycle gear.

Velomacchi main focus is creating exciting products for motorcycle riders, so you might be wondering why I would review a product that was designed for motor cycles.  To tell you the truth, my interest was perked when I saw the Velomacchi Speedway Backpack.  I envisioned everyday cyclists using it as a commuter backpack option and to be perfectly honest, I thought it looked wicked cool.

Velomacchi makes 2 versions of the Speedway including a 28L and and a 40L.  We were sent the 40L.  Both backpacks use the same harness system, but differ on how the roll-top is fastened and how pockets and other straps are positioned.

Velomacchi Speedway Backpacks 28L and 40L

Velomacchi Speedway Backpack

Velomacchi designed the Speedway using a 3-point-pivot harness.  The centerpiece in the design and what makes the harness quite unique is Velomacchi’s use of the Fidlock closure system (Mini turn thread handle F alu 40), a magnetic sternum coupler latch that looks something out of the future or maybe something a fighter pilot might wear.

Velomacchi Magnetic Sternum Coupler

The Fidlock system allows for effortless backpack removal and easy entry and closing when needed.  To use the Fidlock, you simply hold it over the closure hole and magnets take over to lock it in place.  To remove, a quick twist on the dial will unlock the harness.

Observation: I found the locking mechanism to be very solid and easy to use.  It’s actually sort of fun to play with.

Moving upward on the backpack straps you will find clavicle hinge pivot points, one on each strap, that use a rivet type mechanism.  These pivot points help improve comfort and provide for greater range of motion.

Velomacchi Backpack Speedway Clavicle Hinge

Observation: When wearing the backpack with a t-shirt I found that the rivet bolt dug into my clavicle.  I contacted the company and they suggested placing gripper or felt pads on the bolts.  For me a better option would be for Velomacchi to add a padded pocket over the bolt.  That would still allow for bolt removal if needed, but provide more padding and comfort.  I haven’t been able to test the backpack with a heavy jacket on due to the hot weather here in Austin, but my guess is using a jacket would eliminate the issue I had while wearing a t-shirt.

Velomacchi Speedway GoPro Mount

For those that use GoPros or other action cameras, the backpack is equipped with a camera mounting surface.

Velomacchi Backpack Speedway Camera Mounting Plate

The backpack’s harness contains other nice little touches including an emergency velcro id pocket and a tire gauge sleeve.

Velomacchi Speedway Roll-top Backpack

As someone who is a huge fan of roll-top backpacks such as the Timbuk2 Especial Tres or the Mission Workshop Vandal, the Speedway doesn’t disappoint.  The backpack comes with a fully seam-taped roll-top liner designed to keep the elements out and stuff completely dry.  As with most roll-tops, it can be expanded or compressed based on your needs.  There are metal fasteners on each side providing excellent security.

Velomacchi Speedway Rolltop Backpack

For days when you might have to overstuff the backpack, the Speedway roll-top uses a magnetic strip closure system to help keep items in without strapping it down.

Observation: While the Speedway 40L roll-top provides more room, I didn’t find it as useful as the Timbuk2 or Vandal when you really needed to overstuff the backpack.  The main issue pertains to the 40L roll-top 2 point fastening system and not providing excess webbing for larger loads.  Had Velomacchi adopted their 28L roll-top fastening system instead, my guess is the functionality would have been similar to what both Timbuk2 and Vandal use.  On the flip side, the 2 point fastening system does add a bit more security, especially when traveling at high speed.

Velomacchi Speedway Backpacks 28L and 40L

Velomacchi Speedway Backpack Strap Adjustment

Strap Adjustment on the Speedway is done via 4 adjustable plastic clamps, 2 on each side of the backpack.  Once adjustment is done, excess webbing can be tucked away, thus removing any unwanted flapping or unsightly straps.

Observation: Once you have adjusted the backpack to your liking, it’s sort of set it and forget it.  You really don’t have to adjust the backpack straps after that.

Velomacchi Speedway Backpack Helmet Holder

Both the 28L and 40L versions of the Speedway come with an aluminum climbing carabiner type helmet clip attachment that is useful for holding helmets.

Velomacchi Speedway Aluminum Helmet Clip

Observation: I did find that simply using the helmet clip was’t enough to keep the helmet from swinging while walking.  To eliminate the swing I ended up using one of bungie stormproof toggle closures and also wrapped that around the helmet strap.  It kept the helmet much more secure.

Velomacchi Speedway Stormproof Toggle Closure

Velomacchi Speedway Pockets

The Speedway comes equipped with several pockets/sleeve areas of varying sizes including

  • 1 Large roll-top waterproof compartment
  • 1 YKK zippered rear pocket
  • 1 Stormproof toggle pocket
  • 1 YKK zippered side pocket
  • 1 Hydration Sleeve

The roll-top pocket is perfect for keeping items bone dry.  I found the larger YKK zippered pocket useful for separating my change of clothes and easy access to cloths I needed.  The Stormproof toggle pocket is great for holding misc items, but it is also useful for holding locks and water bottles.  The small zippered side pocket is helpful for holding ids and a phone.  The rear pocket is designed to hold a water bladder or a laptop.

Velomacchi YKK Zippers

Velomacchi uses rather bomb proof YKK zippers on the side pocket and back pocket.

Observation: I would have liked to see the main waterproof compartment have a padded laptop sleeve.  To me that would have been more useful than housing a laptop on the outside where there is a higher potential of water damage.

Velomacchi does sell some cool Laptop Impact Laptop sleeves that can work in combination with the Speedway.

Velomacchi Laptop Impact Sleeves

Velomacchi Speedway Materials

Velomacchi uses 1000d (Denier CORDURA Nylon) Competition Fabric, which Velomacchi claims is water proof, abrasion resistant and stable at high speeds.  The back section uses Ballistic Quilted Back panels.

Velomacchi Speedway Ballistic Back Panel

Observation: I absolutely love the material.  It’s very rugged and works exceptionally well.  I would like to see the backpack incorporate some type of air flow ridges or channels to allow air to flow around your back when wearing the backpack.  I did find in hotter climates, like Austin, not as much air flows, so your back can get sweaty.

Velomacchi Speedway Hydration

Liquid water anyone?  Yep the Speedway can also house various water flasks for those who want to carry liquids on their adventures.

Velomacchi Speedway Backpack Hydration_Detail

Product Specs

FEATURES:

  • Sensa Codatm Self Tailing Compression Strap
  • Retail: $299 40L and $269 28L

Bottom Line

If you are looking for a bomb proof backpack that you can cycle with or take on your next motorcycle adventure, the Velomacchi Speedway Roll-Top Backpack will certainly not disappoint.  It’s super cool, stays where it should and if the occasional downpour should happen, your belongings will be safe and dry.

Given it’s design, I could easily see it being a useful backpack for skiers and those adventuring in the snow.

For those who are on the fence between the 28L and the 40L, I would get the 40L and not look back.  The extra space can come in handy and realistically it’s bigger, but not overly so.  I suppose if you’re looking for a mountain bike backpack, the 28L might be a better option.

Is there a downside? The only real downside to the Speedway is cost, where the $299 price tag might deter some folks from getting it.  Based on what I have seen, getting a quality backpack like the Speedway always cost a lot more than your average Walmart special and in my opinion it’s money well spent.

I would have liked to see a belt strap option added for a tighter fit on bumpy roads.

Check out the Velomacchi website (https://www.velomacchi.com) for more information on the Speedway and other neat products.

Here at GearMashers.com we are always on the lookout for amazing products and great companies to showcase.  Thus the Timbuk2 popped on our radar with the Timbuk2 Especial Tres Commuter Backpack.

Recently I started commuting to work by bike and over the years amassed a large assortment of commuter backpacks, one of which was the Timbuk2 Especial Tres.   After using several to commute to downtown Austin, I have found the Tres to be optimal for me.  It has a ton of storage, feels good on the back and seems perfect for commuting.  The Timbuk2 backpack combines bomb proof construction with light weight reflective materials.

Timbuk2 is known world wide for their outstanding cycling messenger bags.  Located and founded in San Fransisco, California back in 1989 by a bike messenger named Rob Honeycutt, they have continuously manufactured in the city’s Mission District ever since.

The Timbuk2 Especial Tres Backpack is a culmination of years of experience in making the worlds best cycling specific backpacks and bags.

There are a lot of things to like about the Tres including

  • A huge carry just about anything pocket,
  • Multiple smaller easy access pockets
  • U-Lock holder
  • Mesh water bottle holders
  • Misc organizer
  • Computer pouch
  • Reflective/Safety material
  • Way cool bottle opener
  • Safety light loops
  • Zipper pulls

Unboxing

When the Timbuk2 Especial Tres arrived it came in a map looking package.

REVIEW

The Tres is made from Cordura, a really heavy duty material that IMO is basically bomb proof.  I bought a jacket made from Cordura back in the 90’s and it is still one of my favorite/warmest winter jackets.  It just doesn’t rip.

The grey triangle sections and the front piping are reflective, giving this backpack some major Kudos for safety at night.

The Tres come with 4 main compartments and 1 laptop compartment and 1 organizer compartment.    On the front of the backpack there is a flip top compartment that has an organizer in it for pens and smaller items.  It has enough room to fit an iPad.

TimBuk2-Especial-Tres-Backpack-Flap-pocket

Another pocket is located on the side of the front flap pouch.  It’s roomy enough an iPhone, wallet and keys.

TimBuk2-Especial-Tres-Backpack-side-pocket-e1459784284637

On the back of the Tres, there are 2 other pockets.  One gives you access to the large capacity roll-top pocket, for easy access without having to unroll the top and a smaller hidden pocket to store valuables like a wallet.

TimBuk2-Especial-Tres-back-pocket-e1459784553936

TimBuk2-Especial-Tres-Backpack-side-pocket

The backpack comes with 4 points of adjustability including 2 on the shoulder strap, one chest strap and a waist strap.  Both the chest strap and waist strap are removable should you desire that.

TimBuk2-Especial-Tres-Backpack-Waist-Adjustment

To be honest, the bottle opener sold us on the bag.  I saw a picture of the Tres and thought the bottle opener was very cool.  It’s doesn’t get in the way, so those who prefer not to have it, really shouldn’t mind.

TimBuk2-Especial-Tres-Backpack-Bottle-Opener

Timbuk2 refers to their backpack cooling system as their Backbender flexible cooling panel.  It helps keep your back from getting as sweaty.  We found it does help keep your back a bit cooler than other backpacks we have tried as well as reduce a little tension on the spine.

TimBuk2-Especial-Tres-Backpack-Channel

One of the really nice touches Timbuk2 uses for their zipper pulls are their own exclusive zipper pulls.  They certainly make opening and closing zippers much more fun and easier.

Timbuk2-Zipper-Pull

The rolltop is another really important aspect to the backpack.  In rolled up mode the contents of the rolltop pocket are virtually impervious to the elements.  To open the rolltop you simply un-clip the two plastic buckles on either end and open it up.  Inside there is a very deep compartment and a pocket laptop holder.

One of our favorite aspects to the Tres is the ability to carry a 15″ laptop in the rolltop laptop pocket.  It’s padded on both sides and has a nice gap between it an the bottom of the bag.  By designing it in this way, Timbuk2 virtually eliminates any worry about the computer ever getting banged up when the backpack is set down on it’s bottom or side.

Lastly the price point of the Tres isn’t at all out of range of other bags in it’s category.  With a retail of $209, the Timbuk2 Especial Tres isn’t cheap, but it certainly isn’t too expensive.  Another really great perk with Timbuk2 is the Timbuk2 lifetime warranty.  Should the bag’s materials or workmanship ever fail, Timbuk2 has you covered.

Bottom Line

Timbuk2 Especial Tres Backpack – Overall Impression

Timbuk2 delivers on their Timbuk2 Especial Tres Backpack, literally.  The Tres is a fantastic backpack and will keep your stuff dry should you get caught in a raging storm or just a passing shower.  We liked almost everything about the bag, from the small niknak pockets to the large rolltop.  There a lots of little touches (bottle opener, zipper pulls, organizer pouch) that make this backpack standout from it’s design to it’s overall usefulness as a daily commuting backpack.

The only thing we would modify on the Tres would be to add some shoulder adjustability on the upper part of the straps.  This was our only contention with the backpack.  We felt that 2 extra adjustable shoulder straps at the top would have been welcome.  Another possible modification would be to beef up the waist belt.  While it certainly didn’t feel bad, we felt extra padding might have improved the overall fit and feel.

Another cool addition would be incorporating some wicked cool buckles similar to what Chrome uses with their bags or possibly a Cobra buckle or two.  Obviously these options would increase the price point of the backpack.  While the functionality would essentially be the same, the cool factor would go up.

To get the full scoop on the Timbuk2 Especial Tres, check out the Timbuk2 website (http://www.timbuk2.com/).
