So you found the perfect cycling shoe manufacturer, but you’re not quite sure what size shoes to order, well here are some cycling shoe charts to help you decide.

From my experience road, cycling shoes don’t fit the way normal everyday shoes fit.  Most cycling shoes are designed to fit snug, so you want to go down a 1/2 to a full size.  So, for example, I generally wear a 10.5 or 11 in everyday shoes, but I wear a 43.5 in road cycling shoes.

Winter cycling shoes are a bit different because you will want to wear thicker socks so the chart below is about perfect.

Ultimately if you can try the shoes on first you’re better off, but that isn’t always an option, especially if you’re wanting some of the high-end cycling shoes that most bike shops don’t inventory.

Cleats – Will You Need To Buy Them?

Most cycling companies don’t include cleats or pedals with their cycling shoes. That is an extra cost that you will have to take into an account. The good news is cycling cleats and pedals usually last longer than the cycling shoes they are attached to. That means you should be able to swap out an older set of cleats with a new set of shoes.

I am a big fan of Shimano pedals and cleats. They have been tested and worn by some of the best cyclists in the world and continue to be very reliable.

FAQ Cycling Shoe Guide

Are cycling shoes true to size?

Most cycling shoes are smaller than dress/street shoes. I usually go down a 1/2 size. The reason is you want a tighter fit for more control on the pedal and also so your feet don’t move around.

Do Sidi cycling shoes run small?

Sidi Shoes are made in Italy and most Italian/European cycling clothing and shoes tend to run smaller than the US equivalents.

Do cycling shoes wear out?

It really depends on the person, but for me personally, I have yet to wear out a pair of cycling shoes. Unlike running shoes, cycling shoes should last you a few seasons of moderate cycling.

Are cycling shoes worth it?

Heck Yeah, they are. Cycling shoes and pedals with cleats (a.k.a. clipless pedals) provide a fantastic platform for cycling and provide you with the ability to pull up on the upstroke giving you more power.

What size should my cycling shoes be?

You want your cycling shoe to feel snug, but not overly so. They should feel comfortable on with the ability to tighten them as needed.

Should I get Cycling Shoes with the BOA lacing system?

I prefer the BOA system to others. They are easy to use, usually easy to tighten while riding and easy to undo after the ride.

Should I buy the most expensive cycling shoes or entry-level or somewhere in between?

When I buy cycling shoes I usually opt for the higher end ones. They are lighter, usually have a better lacing system and almost always look cool.

Is the Cycling Shoe Size Chart Accurate?

I would refer to it as a baseline. Different cycling shoe manufacturers design their shoes to fit the average person, but if you find you have a high arch, a really wide foot or a really narrow foot, you might have to try several manufacturer’s cycling shoes. NOTE: Never buy online unless there is a return policy.

We were very excited to get our hands on our very first pair of Sidi’s. Its been a long time coming after making several attempts over the years to get a pair. Let’s just say the wait was worth it.

Unboxing the Sidi Alba 2’s was really easy as the box just contained the cycling shoes and a technical manual. Inside the manual, there were a few Sidi stickers, which was nice.

Not much to unbox. You get 2 shoes and a tech manual.

ALBA 2 CARBON CYCLING SHOE

Sidi’s goal with the Alba 2 was to design a lower entry shoe for cyclists that wouldn’t give them sticker shock. While the shoes are still expensive (over $200), they are much less than many other SIDI offerings.

To reduce the price SIDI built the shoes with a single TECNO 3 dial and replaced an additional one with 2 Velcro straps. They went further and used slightly different materials than their higher models use including utilizing a Politex synthetic upper and a Millennium 4 Carbon Sole.

While the materials are of a cheaper grade, performance is still very high and realistically most cyclists probably feel the difference.

OBSERVATION: When first testing out the Alba 2’s I ran into an issue where the top of the tongue was digging into my tibia. As it turns out, most Sidi shoes come with a tongue that is cut in several places leading to the top of the tongue. However, the cuts stop short of the edge of the tongue.

Sidi recommends that if you experience issues like I was describing you can use a pair of scissors to extend each cut to the edge. This allows the top edge of the tongue to flare out and not dig into the top of your foot or tibia. The tongue lays flatter on the top of the foot after this and should eliminate the issue.

Color Choice

The Alba 2 comes in 4 flavors depending on your preference. We received the black/black, which is a classic color and looks great.

Shoe Fit And Performance

The fit, comfort, and quality of Sidi shoes are well known and the Alba 2’s doesn’t disappoint. The quality is top-notch.

Sidi uses a material known as Politex and it fits your feet like only a high-end pair of shoes from an Italian footwear firm can.

In designing the shoe, Sidi uses several overlapping layers with different properties that are compacted into two fabrics, knitted fabric and felt, that are then dyed for long-lasting color retention. The use of Politex means the shoes will be durable and will help resists ripping, tearing, stretching and fading.

“Politex” is made in strict compliance with European regulations and is a totally “green” product.

The Alba 2 has a single mess vent on the bottom of the shoe

The Sidi Alba 2 road shoes use a standard 3-hole drilling pattern and are compatible with 3-hole road cleats and pedals and utilize Look’s Memory Eyelets for easy cleat alignment and replacement down the road.

SIDI TECNO 3 SYSTEM

Sidi uses a single TECNO 3 dial on the Alba 2. This was the first time using the TECNO 3 and I have to say it is very good.

The TECNO 3 comes with a flip-up tab that allows you to add tension and also 2 buttons to loosen tension. The flip-up tab gives you a bit more torque than boa dials do, which I happen to like.

The Tecno 3 system is very similar to the dials featured on other high-end shoes. It comes with a micro-adjustable widget that helps adapt the upper to the shape of the foot for a customized fit. The wire material is non-binding and allows for quick and effortless adjustments on the fly.

If you do run into issues, Sidi is well known for serviceability and the buckles are replaceable if needed.

SIDI TECNO 3 Closed
SIDI TECNO 3 Open with flip tab pointing outward
Adjustable Closure

Velcro Closure System

The SIDI Alda 2 is equipt with 2 Velcro straps that are easy to adjust and change on the fly.

While I do think the Velcro straps work as designed, I prefer the performance of a boa closure system or in this case SIDI’s TECNO 3 SYSTEM.

With that said, the use of velcro straps reduces overall shoe cost, which for many is a really good thing.

Breathability

The Sidi Alba 2 contains quite a few pinholes to allow the shoes to breathe, but it isn’t as breathable as other cycling shoes that come with larger vents.

I would rate the cycling shoes for winter, early sprint, and late fall riding. For summer, the shoes will probably run a bit hot.

The cycling shoes also come with a single screened vent on the bottom, but once you add cleats, it really doesn’t provide any airflow since they cover up the opening.

Sidi-Alba-2-Cycling-Shoe-Review-Carbon-Bottom-Showing-Screen

Suola Millennium 4 Carbon Composite Sole

The Suola Millennium 4 Carbon Composite Sole features injected carbon fiber in a matrix of Nylon, providing more rigidity than a standard nylon sole.

The Millennium 4 Carbon Composite Sole is also more durable, completely non-water-absorbent and mechanically stable, meaning it’s less susceptible to changes in stiffness resulting from aging, prolonged usage, and changes in temperature or humidity.

Sidi-Alba-2-Cycling-Shoe-Review

An anti-slip toe insert and replaceable polyurethane heel pad are incorporated into the Millennium 4 Carbon Composite Sole, for walkability.

Heel Cup Adjustability

Unlike some of the SIDI offerings, the heel cup isn’t adjustable. That said I had no issue and didn’t feel the need to adjust anything.

The shoes come standard with an anti-slip toe insert and replaceable polyurethane heel pad to help improve walkability and add overall durability.

  • Sidi road cycling shoes at an aggressive price
  • Proven stiffness and durability of the Millenium 4 outsole
  • Politex synthetic uppers conform to your foot
  • An upper dial with hook-and-look strap fastening system
  • Sidi shoes set the course for style and performance for all cycling shoes

Back in 2017, we were fortunate to attend the now-defunct Interbike and make a lot of cycling industry contacts. Through those contacts (Thanks Suzette Ayotte) we were able to get out hands on some cool BONT Cycling Shoes. At the time we were able to review the  Bont Vaypor S.

Fast forward a few years and no Interbike, we again were able to score a brand new pair of the BONT cycling shoes called the BONT Riot Buckles.

BONT RIOT Buckle CYCLING SHOE REVIEW

Back To The Basics

BONT Cycling’s CEO and designer Steven Nemeth explains, “Until the integration of the BOA system in a cycling shoe, a buckle and Velcro closure system was deemed a high standard. As technology evolves, the definition of premium changes and what was once a high standard naturally is reduced to a second or third-tier on the top, middle, or lower end product offering scale.

The reality is, there is nothing functionally wrong with a buckle and some people actually prefer that technology. Because the perceived value has changed so have small parts specs which to our advantage allows us to offer a super-stiff profit in a truly affordable package that is now the Riot Buckle.”

Sizing

BONT cycling shoes tend to run about 1/2 to a full 1 1/2 smaller than most of the major manufacturers. I normally wear a 43.5 to 44 in most cycling shoes and for the BONT RIOTs, a 45 feels about right.

I also find that BONTs, in general, are more geared towards those with wider feet and those with less of an arch.

FIT

As stated above, BONT uses a combination of a buckle and a Velcro strap for fit. For someone who typically rides with a 2 closure BOA system, the buckle and Velcro strap does a pretty good job of keeping your foot in place.

One of the first things you will notice when trying on a pair of the Bont Vaypor S cycling shoes is the extra-wide toe box that Bont refers to as their Ergoshell.  The shoe’s fit sort of reminds me of the running shoe company called Altra, who also utilize a wide toe box similar in design.  Heck if you like Birkenstocks, these will have a similar fit as far as toe spacing is concerned.

BONT RIOT Cycling Shoes next to Altra Running Shoes

Bont Vaypor S Anatomical-Forefoot-Shape

Bont’s Ergoshell design allows the foot to function in its most efficient and anatomically correct position.  It also provides greater pedaling force because the toes are spread out naturally covering more surface area rather than squished.  In other words, you have the potential to create more power or watts.  I didn’t notice any power change, trying these on verse other cycling shoes I have used, so maybe it’s marketing hype or requires some type of adaptation to occur first.

When I run I like having a larger toe box, for cycling however when riding in BONTs I don’t feel I have as much control or pedal feel. I guess it boils down to preference. I like my foot really snug in my cycling shoes, so there is zero movement. For people whose feet go to sleep, BONT’s roomy toebox might just the ticket.

Climbing

BONT is known for having very stiff shoes, in fact, they may make stiffest cycling shoes in the industry.

When climbing the shoes simply don’t flex and you can get a lot of power from the platform.

I did feel I had a lot of power when standing up, but I attribute that to the stiff carbon soles more than anything else.

Bont Vaypor S Unidirectional Carbon and Micro Carbon Grid

The bottoms of the RIOTs are made using unidirectional carbon fiber.  The use of carbon fiber creates a super stiff yet lightweight shoe.  The shoes come with a Micro Grid at the front to help align cleat placement.

When wearing the shoes you definitely know you’re wearing carbon as the sole it’s extremely stiff.  Based on other shoes I have tested, the RIOT’s are probably the stiffest of the bunch.  There essentially is no flex when standing or during a sprint.  The shoes are wicked stiff.

Bont Vaypor S Toe and Heel Protection

Bont added a rubber bumper at the front of the shoe and a heal guard to provide extra protection and improve grip when walking.

Bont Vaypor S Anti-Stretch

You can’t see it, but Bont added some anti-stretch material that is sandwiched between the outer layer and the inner liner.  The material is claimed to stop the cycling shoes from stretching over time.

I suppose this could be a good or bad depending on fit.  I have noticed with certain cycling shoes they tend to get more comfortable over time as they stretch to adjust to the foot.  Bont’s material is designed to prevent the shoes from stretching, which might mean they may never feel as good as they could.

Bont’s answer to shoe fit, however, is to allow the shoes to be custom molded using heat.  In essence, you simply put the shoes in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes (Temp 160 degrees), allowing them to heat up, take them out and while still warm you put them on to mold to your feet.

BONT RIOT BUCKLE HEIGHT

The BONT RIOT stack height (3.6 mm) is really low compared to many of the cycling shoes out there.  So low in fact, it is one of the only cycling shoes I have tested that is really noticeable and forces me to change my seat height when testing them.  It can be sort of a pain if you have multiple brands of cycling shoes of various stack heights and have to move the saddle up or down.

BONT VAYPOR S VENTILATION

The RIOTs have ventilation holes, screen mesh at the front and top allowing air into the shoe, but I didn’t find them to be as well ventilated as the Pearl Izumi PRO Leader 4 or SIDIs.  They are more on par with the Crono CR1 or Fi’zi:k R1B cycling shoes.

Bottom Line

FINAL OBSERVATIONS | BONT RIOT Buckle CYCLING SHOE REVIEW

If you’re looking for a wicked cool entry-level cycling shoe, the BONT RIOT at only 295 grams and $129 retail is pretty legit.

The RIOT Buckle is available now in two colors options: white with black logos and accents; and black with white logos and accents.

For 2019 Pearl Izumi has a new lace up cycling shoe called the Pearl Izumi Tour Road. It’s a bit of a throwback to lace-up cycling shoes, but with all the modern touches of today’s cycling shoes.

Obviously price point was something Pearl Izumi must have considered and I think they nailed it with the Tour Road’s $130 price point.

Pearl Izumi Background

My first real introduction to the Pearl Izumi brand was back in the early 90’s. I was in full swing doing triathlons and at that time Pearl Izumi made some rather tasty running/cycling apparel perfect for triathlons. Fast forward to August 2016 and Pearl Izumi stunned the running world when they announced that Pearl Izumi would ceased production of their running line of shoes and apparel.

Pearl Izumi wanted to focus solely on their core, which in Pearl Izumi’s case was cycling.  From 2017 on efforts would be focused on “being the best at performance cycling, mountain bike and tri apparel, shoes and accessories”

Based on what I have seen come out from Pearl since 2016, they have certainly met my expectations including their very cool winter line of cycling essentials.

Unboxing

The Pearl Izumi Tour Road cycling shoes arrived in a typical box in a box. There wasn’t much fan fair or a mesh shoe bag to be had, it was all business.

REVIEW

Pearl Izumi Tour Road Cycling Shoe Review 2019

The first thing you will notice is the Tour Road’s lacing system. While in the last few years the trend has been for cycling companies to incorporate BOA or other like systems into their cycling shoes, many companies are now offering lace-up alternatives to BOA, usually with a much nicer price tag.

Cost Savings

The Pearl Izumi Tour Road Cycling Shoes retail for $130, which is a far cry from Pearl’s top of the line $350 P.R.O Leader 4. It’s rather refreshing to see a cycling company coming out with a cycling shoe that doesn’t break your bank account, but still offers a killer value in performance.

Obviously for $130 there had to be some cost cutting and Pearl Izumi achieved this by using a nylon composite sole vs a fully carbon sole, and incorporating laces vs using a BOA system.

Laces Out

Pearl Izumi Tour Road 2 Laces

Pearl Izumi nailed it with the lacing system. Like the P.R.O. Leader 4, Pearl Izumi uses an asymmetrical slightly off-center lacing system to avoid sensitive areas on top of the foot. It virtually eliminates pressure points of a traditional center setup and really hugs your foot.

The downside of laces, especially for those who love to micro adjust their shoes while riding, is you will need to stop to make any adjustments. You will also have to make sure the laces are properly secured before riding. It’s no fun getting laces tangled in a chain or other moving bike parts.

The good news is the Tour Road do come with lace locks, providing a safe place to stash your laces

2 Bolt SPD or 3 Bolt SPD-SL Flexibility

Pearl Izumi Tour Road 3 bolt SPD-SL and 2 bolt SPD

The Tour Road gives the rider the option to either use 2 bolt SPD type cleats or the 3 bolt SPD-SL pattern.

On my indoor trainer I use a 2 bolt Shimano SPD setup, which is a more typical setup for indoors. Out on the road I use the traditional 3 bolt pattern cleats.

It really boils down to preference and with the Tour Road you have flexibility to use either one.

Stiffness

According to Pearl Izumi the Tour Road has a stiffness rating of 9. To give you some comparison, the P.R.O. Leader 4 has a stiffness rating of 13. I’m not exactly sure how Pearl Izumi calculates stiffness, but the Leader 4’s do feel a bit stiffer when climbing and when you are out of the saddle sprinting.

I am willing to bet the average Joe or Jane isn’t really going to notice much difference. It’s really the pros who might want the stiffer sole of the P.R.O. Leader 4.

Speaking of soles, one reason for the difference in stiffness has to do with the materials used. The Tour Road was developed with a nylon composite sole with a carbon forefoot. The P.R.O. Leader 4 utilizes a full carbon sole.

Direct-Vent Technology

Pearl Izumi has incorporated just the right amount of venting and drainage into the shoes to keep your feet cool and comfortable.

Pearl Izumi Tour Road Bottoms
Pearl Izumi Tour Road air flow

There are 4 mesh vents on the bottom of the shoes and laser cut pinhole venting on the upper. For summer, late spring and early fall these shoes would be an excellent choice.

For winter, cold springs and late fall I would probably recommend teaming them up with Pearl Izumi’s P.R.O. AmFIB WxB Shoe Covers or P.R.O. Thermal Toe Covers depending on temperature.

  • Weight: 270 grams / 9.5 oz. (size 43)
Bottom Line

At $130 the Pearl Izumi Tour Road cycling shoes are one heck of a bargain. The seamless upper provides a fantastic feel and the asymmetrical lacing setup means the top of your feet will not get hot spots.

The shoes look great on and provide excellent performance. You will not be disappointed.

Last year at Interbike I got a chance to check out the radical and very gnarly Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling shoe.

Northwave Extreme Xcm 2 Gtx Cycling Shoe Review

It’s a combination of an ankle boot and an MTB/XC cycling shoe mashed together to combat cold winter riding and of course cold feet. It’s like having a wetsuit from your ankles to your toes and just looking at them make you feel warm and cozy.

Northwave is one of the few cycling shoe companies that actually caters to winter riding and riders. With the Xtreme XCM GTX, you don’t need to wear booties or toe covers, because it’s all combined into one package.

Unboxing

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Unboxing

The cycling shoes arrived in your typical cycling shoe box with the cool Northwave logo.

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling Shoe Unboxing

I received a size US 11 / 44. I normally wear a size 43, but I figured since these are winter cycling shoes I might want to wear thicker socks, so a bigger size was in order.

The Extreme XCM 2 GTX come in Sizes: 39-48, so those with very small feet or large feet may not be able to wear them.

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling Shoe Size

The shoes come equipped with 2 aggressive front cleats on the sole that are replaceable. Unfortunately, the heel pads of the shoes aren’t replaceable.

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling Shoe carbon bottom
Northwave Extreme XCM 2 GTX Shoe Review Bottom

The shoes are SPD compatible with a nice looking carbon base plate. Northwave rates the shoes with a Stiffness index of 12, which is about the highest I have seen on a pair of mountain bike shoes.

The toe box is reinforced with a highly abrasion-resistant rubber and the reinforcement extends 360° protection along the entire upper.

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling Shoe dial

The lacing system utilizes Northwave’s Xframe® patented construction and SLW2 dial dial system. These are the exact same dials that are used in the Northwave Extreme RR.

The Xframe design really seems to wrap around the foot, giving a good amount of tension and keeping your foot in place.

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling Shoe adjusting dial

While the Northwave SLW2 dials do work, I prefer BOA dials for ease of use. The main issue with the Northwave dials is you often have to use to hands to make adjustments. With BOAs you almost always just need one.

REVIEW

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX 2019 Review

When you unbox the Xtremes you will notice the quality and beefiness. They are built for roughed adventures. The rubber outsoles feel legit and definitely give the appearance of a solid piece of cyling equipment.

Gore-Tex®

The shoes are specifically designed for the off-road types, you know the ones who love to get sloppy on single track and crazy downhill runs through the woods.

Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling Shoe Gore-Tex

Northwave incorporated Gore-Tex®, as the material of choice to prevent unwanted water, snow, and sleet from entering the cycling shoes. In fact, Northwave was the first cycling shoe manufacturer to use Gore-Tex® and was the first to address the demands for performance winter shoes.

The Gore-Tex is infused in an elastic Rattler® membrane and placed in critical areas that create a wind and waterproof shield.

Climaflex Collar

Northwave Extreme XCM 2 GTX Shoe Review

Northwave uses what they refer to as a Climaflex collar that extends beyond a normal cycling shoe, looking more like a boot than a typical cycling shoe. It’s a combination of soft and highly-insulating thermal Neoprene.

I found the collar to be really helpful in helping to keep the muck out and also keep your feet a bit warmer. Those who like to wear shorter socks may want to wear taller ones when wearing the Xtreme XCM 2 GTXs.

With the Gore-Tex® Duratherm membrane upper, you are guaranteed to have a shoe that is totally windproof and water proof.

Temperature Rating

The Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX’s are rated for -15°C (5°F) & up to 5°C (41°F). Yes you could say they are the warmest cycling shoes made and if not certainly rank up there.

Northwave utilizes an Arctic GTX footbed with a four-layer aluminum and fleece construction works with the membrane to deliver outstanding warmth and insulation.

Let’s just say it is no ordinary shoe insert, it’s designed for cold and it works.

Technical

  • The water- and windproof Gore-Tex® Duratherm membrane is the best for wicking away any sweat and keeps your feet perfectly insulated and warm even in the coldest conditions
  • Made with Xframe® patented construction and ultralight next-generation materials, the upper transfers every watt of power and provides the snuggest, even fit with no pressure points
  • Additional thermal layer on the toe delivers unbeatable insulation and warmth
  • Highly abrasion-resistant rubber reinforcements ensure 360° protection along the entire upper
  • SLW2 dial, the only one with step-by-step and full release in a single button
  • The Climaflex collar made of extremely elastic Gore-Tex Rattler® membrane and highly insulating Neoprene delivers unprecedented mobility and protection from the weather
  • Integrated heel system ensures efficient heel retention
  • The Arctic GTX footbed with a four-layer aluminum and fleece construction works with the membrane to deliver outstanding warmth and insulation
  • 360° reflective inserts
  • Weight: 448 grams
  • Sizes: 39-48
  • Color: Black
  • Price: $329.99
Bottom Line

For those that live in cold climates, the Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX Cycling shoes are a no brainer. They are by far the warmest shoes I have ever worn.

You don’t have to mess with booties or toe covers; the GTX does it all.

I did find the shoes to be harder to enter and exit than regular cycling shoes, but given the benefit of how warm they are, it’s a tradeoff I would take any day when the weather is cold.

Check out the Northwave Xtreme XCM 2 GTX and other products in the Northwave cycling line.

Giro has been in the cycling business for over 30 years bringing cyclists fantastic technology for racing and training.  With the trend of many top named cycling companies replacing their shoe closure systems with BOAs, Giro has bucked the trend and gone old school with a twist.   Giro has developed a unique lacing technology they dubbed Giro Techlace.

Giro Techlace Cycling Shoes Review

For those not in the know, Giro Techlace is a lacing system that is part lace, part velcro, which allows for super fast entry and exit for fastening shoes.  Beyond the simplicity of the Techlace system, Giro has also managed to reduce the weight, something other competitors can’t match.

For those who love laces, the Techlace achieves lace up qualities and provides amazing adjustment on the fly.

Giro Prolight Techlace Cycling Shoes

Giro Prolight Techlace Cycling Shoe

Giro’s Prolight Techlace Cycling Shoes are a sick light 150 grams per shoe (size 42.5).  Talk about light, but don’t let these light weight shoes fool you.  The Prolight Techlaces also come with a substantial carbon platform called Textreme and titanium bolts.

Entry into these shoes is super fast and exit is just as easy.

Giro Factor Techlace Cycling Shoes

Giro Factor Techlace Cycling Shoe

If the $400 retail price of the Prolights was hard to swallow, you can save $50 by going with the Giro Factor with it’s slightly heavier design and added Boa dial.  At 210 grams per pair (size 42.5) the Factor Cycling Shoes are no slouches and give plenty of performance.

Giro Sentrie Techlace Cycling Shoe

The Sentrie is a full $150 less than the Prolight, yet still maintains similar features of it’s bigger brother.

Giro Techlace Cycling Shoe

Bottom Line – Giro Sentrie Techlace Cycling Shoes

For many even the $250 Giro Sentrie price tag will give them sticker shock, but for really good cycling shoes, that now seems to be the starting point.

I had hoped the Sentries would be cooler, but they ran a little hot, so for me they certainly wouldn’t be my choice for summer cycling shoes.  For spring or fall, I think they would be excellent.

The Techlace system is surprisingly good and is a breeze to use.  I found the shoes super easy to put on and take off.

Ever since attending Interbike last year, I have been trying to get a pair of the Northwave Extreme RR XFrame Cycling Shoes to review.  Today they showed up at my door step unannounced.  I had sort of written off getting a pair, but then all of a sudden they arrived.  Christmas in March!

Northwave Extreme RR X-Frame Cycling Shoes 2018 A

Olaf gets a little excited every time a package arrives, especially if it is from Italy.

Northwave Company History

Northwave LogoNorthwave hails from Northern Italy not too far from Venice.   The company got it start in 1993 when Gianni Piva launched their bi-color Integral mountain bike shoes, the first shoes produced by Northwave.

Since then Northwave has been producing excellent cycling shoes, apparel and accessories.  I can remember back in the late 90’s seeing Northwave cycling shoes for triathlon.  I never had a pair, but they always seem rather cool with their Italian flair.

In 2016 Northwave launched their XFrame line and now has introduced the the Xtreme RR.

The goal of the XFrame construction was to design a shoe’s retention system that would eliminate pressure point issues occurring on the upper part of the foot.

Northwave Extreme RR XFrame Cycling Shoe Review

Northwave Extreme RR Cycling Shoes

The Extreme RR cycling shoes are housed in a great looking shoe box

I don’t know why, but Italians always seem to know how to use colors with the proper amounts of detail and graphics.

Extreme RR Cycling Shoe XFrame Shoe Bag

Extreme RR Cycling Shoe XFrame Shoe Bag. Not sure how many cycling shoe bags actually get used. I tend to throw them away or used them for other purposes.

Each Extreme RR cycling shoes come with a mesh shoe bag and 2 sets of shoe footbed inserts.  The footbeds have a  stiffened dual density design and come in a Pro Regular Fit and Pro Slim Fit (features an extra 2 mm toe insert for narrow feet).  I prefer the Pro Regular Fit, since my feet aren’t narrow.

The shoes seem true to size and I have had zero fitting issues.  I have read some reviews where people feel the shoes are a bit too narrow, but for me I didn’t have that problem.

Extreme RR Cycling Shoes

The Extreme RRs come with an extra set of shoe inserts and a shoe bag.

Northwave Extreme RRs come in 3 flavors, Neon Yellow with black highlights, Black with Neon Yellow highlights and White with Red highlights.  Our shoes arrived in the Black with a Neon Yellow highlight color pallet.

While the Neon color scheme isn’t bad and probably is more visible on the road, I would like to see a few other color combos that are more subdued.

The shoes are made with Northwave’s Xframe patented construction and an ultralight material that is 0.5 mm thick.

Northwave Extreme RR Cycling Shoes 2018

Here is a closer look at the Extreme RRs.

Northwave Extreme RR Directions

The shoes came with 2 tags that tell you how to use the dials. I found the dials a bit more complicated than BOAs.

Northwave Extreme RR Propriety Dials

Northwave Propriety Dials.

Extreme RR SLW2 Dial2 System

One thing that will become quite evident is the Extremes don’t come equipped with a BOA closure system.  Instead Northwave uses their own proprietary SLW2 dials and synthetic XFrame lacing system.  Vittoria was another cycling shoe company that had their own dials, but last year switched to the BOA system for their high end shoes.

After playing around with the SLW2 dials, I found them pretty easy to use, but not as easy as the new BOA systems, especially the new IP1 dials that are on cycling shoes like the PEARL IZUMI P.R.O. LEADER V4.

The downside to BOA’s IP1 is they have a higher profile and maybe are less aero compared to the SLW2s low profile layout.  Probably not a big deal, but something to consider.

While most high end cycling shoes I have reviewed have 2 adjustment dials, the Extreme RRs come with a single dial.  Having a single dial means that you can’t make as many micro adjustments to your fit, but after trying them on, I didn’t find I needed to make any additional adjustments.  If you prefer the performance of a dual dial shoe instead, the Northwave “Extreme” comes with 2 dials and a velcro strap.

Northwave Extreme

The XFrame lacing system seems to contour to the foot providing a ton of security and stability.  With the uppers only being .5mm thick, it almost feels like you’re not wearing a cycling shoe.  Very comfortable.

Extreme RR Cycling Shoes SPD and SpeedPlay Compatible

The shoes are SPD and SpeedPlay compatible.

Northwave Extreme RR Carbon Soles

The bottoms of the Extremes are made from an Ultralight Carbon 15 sole, which includes unidirectional carbon combined with a reinforced layer.   Northwave gives the shoes a stiffness index of 15.0, making it their best-performing and stiffest Northwave sole ever.

I am not sure how Northwave comes up with their stiffness index, but using the Extremes during out of the saddle bouts I felt extremely secure with zero flex.

The shoes are both SPD and Speedplay adapter compatible providing a very low stack height between the foot and pedals.

Northwave Extreme RR Full Carbon Bottom

As with most top end cycling shoes, the Extreme RRs have full carbon soles.

Extreme RR Heel Retention System

The shoes have some type of shark like skin material in the heel to help keep it secure.

These are the 2nd pair of cycling shoes I have tested that come with a shark like skin material in the heel.  The Integrated heel system contains directional fiber which helps prevent any heel slipping and from my experience definitely works.

Extreme RR Cycling Shoe Bag

The Extreme RRs hanging out in the Northwave cycle shoe bag

I know shoe bags are sort of cool, but I never seem to use them for my cycling shoes.  I end up using them for socks or other clothing items.

Northwave Shoe Logo

Northwave Shoe Logo and XFrame lacing system

Alexander Kristoff Getting His Own Extreme RRs

I always like getting a chance to see inside shoe companies and checkout their facilities and the people that work there.  Alexander Kristoff got a chance to get some custom Extreme RR shoes with custom colors.  I really like the final product.

Northwave Extreme RR Technical Specifications

  • Ultralight Carbon 15 sole made of 100% unidirectional carbon combined with a reinforced layer. With a stiffness index of 15.0, it’s the best-performing Northwave sole ever
  • NW Speedplay adapter compatible for the lowest stack height between foot and pedal
  • Made with Xframe® patented construction and ultralight next generation materials that are only 0.5 mm thick, the upper transfers every watt of power and provides the snuggest, even fit with no pressure points
  • SLW2 dial, the only one with step-by-step and full release in a single button
  • Integrated heel system containing directional fibre prevents any slipping
  • Includes two footbeds with a stiffened dual density design: Pro Regular Fit and Pro Slim Fit which features an extra 2 mm toe insert for narrow feet
  • Ultralight at just 220 g!
  • Retail Price : $395.00

Bottom Line – Northwave Extreme RR XFrame Cycling Shoes

The Northwave Extreme RR shoes are extremely comfortable and their performance is top notch.  The combination of the XFrame and a single dial makes the shoes wickedly simple to use and wear.  For those who are looking for a bit more adjustability, you may prefer a dual dial system.  That said, I didn’t feel the need for additional adjustability that a dual dial would provide.

I did find the SLW2 dials a bit more complicated than BOA’s IP1s and I am wondering if sometime in the future Northwave might make a switch to the BOA system like Vittoria has done.

Sizing can be a problematic sometimes when ordering cycling shoes online.  If you don’t have a chance to try them on first, you’re never quite sure of the sizing.  I found the Extreme’s, at least for me to fit true to size.  If I had to choose, I would choose a 1/2 size bigger rather than a 1/2 smaller.  If your feet are really wide, the Extreme RR probably isn’t the ideal shoe for you as it runs a bit narrow.  Northwave does offer a wide version of the Extreme with a dual closure system that should work.

The retail price for the shoes is $395, but I have seen it for as low as $300.  Local availability might be an issue, at least it was for me, with no stores carrying Northwave products near by.  For those who like shopping Amazon and have Prime, you can pick them up under retail with free shipping.

Overall the XFrame design a winner and you will be impressed with it’s great fitting properties.

You can Find the Northwave Extreme on Amazon.

The Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoes are the most breathable cycling shoes I have ever worn.  Airflow is absolutely amazing and I would definitely categorize them as late spring, summer and early fall must haves.

In August of 2016 Pearl Izumi stunned the running world when they announced that Pearl Izumi would ceased production of their running line of shoes and apparel.  The decision to recommit to their core, which in Pearl Izumi’s case was cycling, was bold and decisive.  Starting in January of 2017 all efforts would be focused on “being the best at performance cycling, mountain bike and tri apparel, shoes and accessories”

When Interbike rolled around this year, Pearl Izumi was their in force showcasing some fantastic cycling apparel and shoes.  The Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 happened to be a pretty big hit, drawing lots of attention.

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoe Review 2017 Interbike

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoe Review Interbike 2017

What makes the P.R.O. Leader v4 stand out from the crowed cycling shoe brands is their innovative double BOA system offset on the tongue and the wicked cool mirror like metallic rainbow colored bottoms.

P.R.O. Leader v4 Shipment arrives

Recently we got a slew of Pearl Izumi goodness including cycling shorts, P.R.O. arm warmers, P.R.O. gloves and the P.R.O. Leader V4 Cycling Shoes.  Needless to say we were stoked.  Pearl Izumi’s P.R.O. line is their top of the line cycling apparel and shoes.  Stuff pros would want to wear.  In our case most of it was cold weather gear rated for temps between 40 to 60 degrees.  Perfect for Austin’s cooler winters.

Pearl Izumi P.R.O Apparel and Cycling Shoes

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoe Review

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoes

Pearl Izumi PRO Leader v4 Bag, Insert and arch support risers

The shoes come with a shoe bag and 2 arch support inserts (Medium/High) for those wanting to add more arch support.  I found I didn’t need to add the arch supports, but for those with higher arches you do have options.

Pearl Izumi PRO Leader v4 Inside Rear Heal Bumper

The shoes come with a replaceable heel.  Two screws are used to hold it down and should you need to replace the heel, just remove the shoe inserts and unscrew the screws to replace it.

Pearl Izumi PRO Leader v4 Tongue

It’s a little hard to tell but the cycling shoes tongue is offset with more of the tongue wrapping towards the inside of the shoe.

Pearl Izumi PRO Leader v4 Top down view

By contrast the BOA system sits more on the outside of the shoe rather than straight over the middle.  The shoes were designed this way to help avoid pressure points on the top of the foot.

Pearl Izumi PRO Leader v4 BOA IP4 Sideview

There are mesh panels on the front and both sides of the shoes to allow air flow into them.  I found the shoes to allow a lot of airflow, which should help keep your feet a bit cooler.  Of the many shoes I have tested, I would rate these high on breathability.

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoes front venting

There is also venting on the bottom of the shoe with a mesh screen at the front.

Pearl Izumi PRO Leader v4 Rear Shot

The heel cup has padding on the inside and a recessed part to help keep the foot from slipping.  One thing that is missing that I would like to see added is the shark tooth type material many cycling shoes have.  The material is really good at keeping the ankle from sliding.

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoes Observations

Below are just a few observations I had when cycling with the shoes.

  • When taking the shoes for a spin I felt the top of my big toes hitting the top of the shoes and was a bit concerned, but after a few rides nothing seemed to go wrong.  The sensation sort of dissipates and you forget about it.
  • The BOA IP1 dials work really well and you can really crank down on the tension.
  • The upper material doesn’t flex as much as leather or other synthetics I have cycled with, but certainly isn’t uncomfortable.
  • The shoes fit true to size and I didn’t have any issue with sizing.
  • I didn’t feel any flex in the carbon soles when in a stand up sprint or while climbing hills.  They reacted really well and I felt I wasn’t losing any power.
  • The shoes are certainly breathable and allowed lots of airflow.  I would not recommend these shoes for winter riding without shoe covers.
  • I have been testing quite a few cycling shoes an one thing I am constantly having to do is adjust the seat height based on the cycling shoes stack height.  These fall in between the Crono R1s and the Bonts.  I had to lower my traditional seat height slightly to test these out.  Something to consider when buying cycling shoes.

P.R.O. Leader v4 Features BOA IP1 Dials

Pearl Izumi added 2 of BOA’s top of the line IP1 dials that are dual directional and have easy micro-adjustment functionality.  The dials utilize quick release simply by pulling up and and are engaged by pushing in.  Turn to the right to tighten and to the left to loosen. EASY PEASY!

BOA IP1 Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoe

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoe Specifications

  • NEW 1:1 Zero Distraction Upper Fit mitigates foot discomfort by avoiding the soft tissue running along the top of the foot
  • Advanced 3-Layer Seamless Composite Upper offers exceptional breathability and eliminates hot spots by adapting to your unique foot shape
  • Unibody construction eliminates traditional lasting board to deliver super low 5mm stack height for maximum pedaling efficiency
  • Zonal Bi-directional Closure wraps the foot for a semi-custom fit and secure foot retention
  • Dual Boa® IP1 dials allow 1 mm micro-adjustability and pop up for full release
  • 1:1 Integrated Carbon Power Plate delivers feather-light stiffness (stiffness rating of 13)
  • 1:1 Insole System allows independent left and right arch and forefoot varus canting adjustability for optimal pedaling mechanics
  • Replaceable heel bumper
  • Retail: $350.00

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader v4 Cycling Shoes | Bottom Line

Pearl Izumi has built a reputation for making fantastic cycling products and the Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Leader 4 is just another great example of their devotion to the sport.

You will not be disappointed with how the P.R.O. Leader 4 performs in and out of the saddle.

Looking forward to a V5 version, I expect slight changes to the upper with a more softer feel and possibly changes to the heel material.  As far as BOA positioning and Carbon stiffness, I am not really sure there is any room for improvement.  The shoes perform extremely well and I expect to see these shoes on Pros and Amateur cyclists alike.

Welcome to our Bont Vaypor S Cycling Shoe Review.  In 2017 we were fortunate to attend Interbike and make a lot of cycling industry contacts, one of which was able to introduce us to Bont Cycling and their cycling shoe line.

Bont Vaypor S Pearl White One

My knowledge of Bont goes back to the late 80’s early 90’s when I for a period of time was an INLINE RACERerererer.  Back then the most widely known inline skate company was called Rollerblade and their name became synonymous for inline skating and the sport was often referred to as Rollerblading.  It was a funny time because many people had not seen people on inline skates.   The term inline simple means wheels all in a row.  It was rather fun getting weird looks and people asking what are those things.

After a few years of rollerblading I decided to enter an Inline race.  Since the sport was relatively new, there weren’t a lot of races, but luckily I found one that was close by and entered.   It was a 10k format and took place on a police test track course.   The race was pretty uneventful and lets just say I got my ass handed to me.  It was a fun experience, but it seemed all the fast inline racers weren’t using Rollerblades like I was, but instead had these cool leather/carbon skate boots made by Bont.

At some point I too started to race in Bont skates and for a year or two had a blast.  After about two years my passion for inline racing faded and I started doing triathlons.  I still have those Bont Inline skates and they bring back fond memories of inline racing.

Bont Vapor S Cycling Shoe Review

Fast forward to 2017 and I got my second chance to wear Bonts and this time they’re called the Bont Vaypor S cycling shoes.

Bont Cycling History

Bont got it start in 1975 when Inze Bont, a recreational skater decided to fiberglass the back of his leather skates to gain extra support. A simple, yet innovative approach launched the company known for it’s carbon skates and cycling shoes.

The company evolved from working with materials such as fiberglass (1975) to Kevlar (1986) to Carbon (1989) and have continued the trend of making custom carbon shoes and boots ever since.

In 2007 the company expanding into cycling and by the 2008 Beiging Olympics had 8 Gold metals winners wearing their cycling shoes.

Bont Vaypor S Cycling Shoe Review

A month or so after Interbike we received our first Bont Cycling shoes to review.  The shoes came in traditional black with a white stripe.

Bont Vaypor S Black

Unfortunately the Vaypor’s run about 1/2 size smaller than most and so as a result I had to returned them.  Bont quickly sent out another pair in pearly white with blue stripes that were 1/2 larger.  I typically wear a size 43.5 in cycling shoes and the new Bonts were size 44, which felt fit.

Bont Vaypor S Cycling Shoe Review

The Bont Vaypor S cycling shoes arrived.

Bont Vaypor Size 44

The Vaypor S runs about 1/2 smaller than most typical cycling shoes.

Bont Vaypor S Daul BOA Dials

Bont Vaypor S with dual BOA IP1 Dials

The Vaypor S is one step down from the newly released Bont Helix (Retail $399).  Instead of a single BOA closure system, the Vaypor has 2.

Bont Helix Cycling Shoe Single Boa

One of the first things you will notice when trying on a pair of the Bont Vaypor S cycling shoes is the extra wide toe box that Bont refers to as their Ergoshell.  The shoe’s fit sort of reminds me of the running shoe company called Altra, who also utilize a wide toe box similar in design.  Heck if you like Birkenstocks, these will have a similar fit as far as toe spacing is concerned.

Bont Vaypor S Anatomical-Forefoot-Shape

Bont’s Ergoshell design allows the foot to function in its most efficient and anatomically correct position.  It also provides greater pedaling force because the toes are spread out naturally covering more surface area rather than squished.  In other words you have the potential to create more power or watts.  I didn’t notice any power change, trying these on verse other cycling shoes I have used, so maybe it’s marketing hype or requires some type of adaptation to occur first.

I did feel I had a lot of power when standing up, but I attribute that to the stiff carbon soles more than anything else.

Bont Vaypor Cycling Shoe Review BOA IP1 dials

Bont Vaypor S with dual BOA IP1 Dials

Bont Vaypor S Retention-System

The Bont Vaypor S employs BOA’s dual directional micro adjustable IP1 dials.   When tightening the dials, the upper design wraps and pulls the foot rearwards without any excess pressure for a really snug fit.

You can really crank down the tension to get a super snug fit.

Bont Vaypor S Unidirectional Carbon and Micro Carbon Grid

The bottoms of the Vaypor S are made using unidirectional carbon fibre.  The use of carbon fiber creates a super stiff yet lightweight shoe.  The shoes come with a Micro Grid at the front to help align cleat placement.

When wearing the shoes you definitely know you’re wearing carbon as the sole it’s extremely stiff.  based on other shoes I have tested, the Vaypor’s are probably the stiffest of the bunch.

You can’t see it, but Bont added some anti stretch material that is sandwiched between the outer layer and the inner liner.

Bont’s answer to shoe fit however is to allow the shoes to be custom molded using heat.  In essence you simply put the shoes in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes (Temp 160 degrees), allowing them to heat up, take them out and while still warm you put them on to mold to your feet.

Bont Vaypor S Stack Height

The Vaypor S stack height (3.6 mm) is really low compared to many of the cycling shoes out there.  So low in fact it is one of the only cycling shoes I have tested that is really noticeable and forces me to change my seat height when testing them.  It can be sort of a pain if you have multiple brands of cycling shoes of various stack heights and have to move the saddle up or down.

Bont Vaypor S Ventilation

The Vapors have ventilation holes, screen mesh at the front and bottom vents on the bottom allowing air into the shoe, but I didn’t find them to be as well ventilated as the Pearl Izumi PRO Leader 4 or SIDIs.  They are more on par with the Crono CR1 or Fi’zi:k R1B cycling shoes.

Bont Vaypor S Ventilation Air Flow

Final Observations | Bont Vaypor S Cycling Shoe Review

If you’re looking for a sick light set of cycling shoes (230 grams), the Bont Vaypor S is a fantastic choice.  With BOA’s top of the line IP1 Dials, a custom moldable shoe and an extremely stiff carbon sole, the Vaypor is running on all cylanders.

It is a must try on cycling shoe and those who have tend to rave about the performance it delivers.

Italian flare + cycling shoes = perfection.  The 2017 Crono CR1 Cycling Shoes are just about perfect.  They have the right amount of color and performance to win over many cycling enthusiasts.  At the 2017 Interbike show, I got a chance to check out Crono’s new lineup of cycling shoes.  I hadn’t heard of Crono (http://www.cronoteam.it/), so I was excited to see what they had to offer.

Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe Review | 2017

Crono Cycling History

Crono Cycling LogoThe Crono brand has been around for 44 years and was established in 1973.  I was told that Crono also worked on the Fi’zi:k brand of cycling shoes, but I could be wrong on this.  Crono is family owned and has been since it’s inception.  The company’s factory is based in Treviso, Italy.

Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe Review | 2017

This week the Crono CR1’s arrived and I got my first chance to ride with them.  To say I was pumped is an understatement.  The CR1’s deliver great comfort and fit.  They run true to size and have a better lacing system than the Fi’zi:k R1B UOMOs.

The Crono CR1 pair of cycling shoes size 43.5 arrive safe and sound.

We received the CR1 in white with black and red accents.  An absolutely brilliant color scheme.

Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe 2018

The Crono comes standard with 2 Boa IP1-S double way closure with nylon coated steel lace systems.  The dials have the ability to tighten or loosen with a micro adjustment click.  The Crono also has laser holes on the side to help with ventilation.

Crono Bottom Adjustment Boa 2018

The lower BOA system really provides a lot of tension if needed, which is evenly distributed on the lower sides of the feet.

Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe Inside 2018

The shoes require a bit more finesse when putting them on due to the large strap.  I found I had to open loosen up the BOA tension all the way.

The shoes come with a standard 3 hole system.  I wasn’t exactly sure what the middle sliding bracket was for.

Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe Review Bottom

The absolute beauty of the shoe is both on the top an bottom.  Just look at the great lettering and carbon weave.  It is just stunning.  By looking at the heal cup you wouldn’t realize it’s replaceable, but it is.  Just another nice touch Crono employs.  The heal cup is screwed in from the inside of the shoe, eliminating screw port on the outside.

You can see the cleat sticks out a bit on either side of the sole.

Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe Review

The CR1 Cycling Shoe is Crono’s top the line performance road cycling shoe.  Crono breaks their road shoes out into 4 categories including CR1, CR2, CR3 and CR4.   With each category drop, the shoes have less high end qualities.  The CR4 cycling shoes for example do away with the the Boa closure system and replace it with velcro straps and buckles.

You have 4 color options with the CR1 including White, Black, Red and Gold.

Like most high end cycling shoes the Crono uses Boa’s IP1-S double way closure system, which allows you to back off tension by turning the Boa clockwise or popping up the Boa nob.

Multi Contact Closure System

Crono has developed what they call a Multi Contact Closure System, that hugs the foot in place.  When I tried on the shoes, I felt like I could really crank down the tension to get a super secure fit.  Crono claims the new closure system prevents the heal from moving and reduces foot slippage.

Crono CR1 multi-contact Boa dial closure System Road Cycling Shoes

People who have wide feet, might have issues with these shoes, since my impression is they run normal to slim.

Synthetic Microfiber Upper and Molded Carbon Bottom

The shoes come with a synthetic microfiber upper and molded carbon bottom, which certainly makes them stiff and perfect on climbs.  Like many of their competitors, the shoes do come with replaceable heels cups, which are helpful if you walk in your shoes a lot.  At first I didn’t realize the help cup was replaceable until I removed the shoe insert and saw the heal cup screw.

Crono uses an anti-slip material in the heel to prevent slippage and it feels much like sharkskin.

Crono CR1 Ventilation

Crono uses laser drilled holes on the sides and aeration on the tongue.  It also comes with a mesh air port on the bottom to increase airflow throughout the shoe.

Crono CR1 Weight

The Crono CR1’s are claimed to weigh 235g, but the ones I was sent (Size 43.5) came in at 324g.  A 89 gram difference, so depending on your size, your shoes will vary.

Crono R1 Cycling Shoe 2017 Black

The CR1 comes in 3 flavors, Black, White and Red.  They all look hot.  For those that like white, these will get dirty on the tips when cycling.  I have a par of white Fi’zi:k R1B and I am always cleaning them.

Crono R1 Cycling Shoe Boa lacing system Side

The Crono CR1’s use a dual Boa lacing system called the Boa® IP1-S double way closure.  The laces are nylon coated steel that are supposed to hold up to a lot of cycling abuse.  I tried on a 43 at the show and was really able to crank down on the laces more so than my other cycling shoes.  The shoes were a bit small, I wear a size 43.5, but I probably could have worn them if needed.

The shoes run true to size.

Bottom Line | Crono CR1 Cycling Shoe Review

The Crono CR1 look absolutely stunning and many companies could learn from Crono’s Italian craftsmanship.  Sizing on these shoes was perfect with zero complaints.  The BOA IP1-S double way closure system is one of the best I have used, creating the perfect amount of tension throughout the shoe.   You’re able to really crank down on either BOA or both if needed for a super snug fit.

I did find the shoes to run a bit hot and they would probably not be my first choice if the temps are above 85 degrees.  While the CR1 do have laser hole cutouts and some venting at the front bottom of the shoe,  there are other shoes on the market that have better venting properties and more air flow.

Crono does offer the CR2, which looks to have a ton of venting at the toe of the shoe and also along the tongue.  What is missing from the CR2 is the the wide strap at the top that the CR1 has.  For spring, fall and winter the CR1 is a clear winner.  If it’s summer I would opt for the CR2 to help keep the feet a bit cooler.  The CR2 is available in two versions – one with the full carbon sole (235g each) like the CR1 and the other with a carbon-reinforced nylon sole (270g).

crono-cr2-white-02

The retail price point on the shoes is $449.00, which is certainly something to think about, but I haven’t seen a better quality cycling shoe.  In this case you definitely get what you pay for and that is a fantastic cycling shoe with killer looks and amazing functionality.

Crono CX Cycling Shoes

Crono also carries a line of off road shoes including the CX2, CX3 and CX4.  The CX2 is roughly equivalent to Crono’s CR2 road shoes, but made to be a bit beefier for cyclecross and mountain biking.  They also have a winter shoe known as the CW1 and triathlon shoe called the CT1.
